2258949, Weekend Soccer 11.08-11: Red Alert

It's a classic story, one that gets told season after season. A tale of two clubs if you will, with one speeding along in its domestic and European campaigns, using superior skill and execution while the other flounders about, with fans roundly criticizing the manager's tactics at every opportunity. But for once the roles are reversed and Arsenal are in the envied role while United stumble into their Fall matchup. As with all narratives, the one currently being written for Arsenal can very much crumble at any moment. One such moment could very well be the 90th (+change) minute at Old Trafford this Sunday, as has happened many times before. But one gets the sense that the Gunners know this and while there is a feeling a confidence that emanates from the squad, it is one based on experiences and not the folly of youth as might have been in the past. Still the tension will be high at kick-off. Man City take their goal-scoring roadshow to Sunderland, which, despite recent history in this matchup, looks like it might have to hold off its nascent improvement for another week. Er, or two, since there's an international break coming up (on a related note I've started stocking up on Pepto-Bismol). Tottenham will want to avoid the same fate as Chelsea when they host Newcastle, although who knows which version of that club will show up.

Spain: Real Madrid will need to push aside upstarts Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu (soon to be Microsoft Arena? Ugh). They'll need to watch out for on-form Antoine Griezmann, the French midfielder who's scored 3 in the last couple of games
Italy: While Roma will try to put the end of their record-breaking winning streak behind them by taking on Sassuolo (uh, who?), there is a cracker of a matchup brewing between Napoli and Juve on Sunday. Both played well in the midweek CL games and are both 3 pts behind Roma.
Germany: Not the easiest of tasks for Dortmund to get over their loss to Arsenal as they are away to 5th-place Wolfsburg. A win wouldn't be a bad idea if they want to keep up with Bayern.
France: PSG will have a somewhat stern test when Nice come to town on Saturday. The eaglets always play tough at the Parc des Princes and the club will want to rebound after the relative complacency shown against Anderlecht in the CL. And now here's another installment of everyone's favorite series "Fuck you Patrice Evra". Here it is: "Fuck you Patrice Evra"

we got a new-ish chelsea fan who seems kind of delusional as well, but in a different way.
2259462, How refs continue to fall for these expected late dives is beyond me
Posted by LA2Philly, Sat Nov-09-13 04:07 PM
You know that shit is coming, you have to be 100% sure there was an actual cotdamn foul. West Brom played a helluva game and it's ruined by the incompetence of an official.
2259419, we got this.

2259785, Playing well defensively but we continue to give the ball away
Posted by LA2Philly, Sun Nov-10-13 12:12 PM
Some of that is certainly ManU who are working really hard to tighten space and windows but we are doing ourselves no favors with so many inaccurate passes to give away possession.

We did a really good job of absorbing ManU's pressure in the first 20 (which is what you expect from them at home), Vermaelen has looked extremely sharp in his first start...but RVP just put away an extremely tough header. I mean at that angle to loft it to the far post, with Arteta draped over him...great goal from a great goal-scorer.

We have to be sharper in our link-up play in the 2nd half if we want to level. Way too sloppy, lets pick it up.
2259789, they really dont give much of a fuck about head injuries over there.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sun Nov-10-13 12:18 PM
2259802, Jones again? He needs to holler at Dr. Omalu

Posted by Buck, Sun Nov-10-13 12:51 PM
2259806, that went as expected.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sun Nov-10-13 01:10 PM
solid setup. stifled the arse really well
a much needed win for moyes.

ozil was on his invisible man shit today.
2259809, Bendtner...you useless piece of shit. Attack that ball and it's a tap-in
Posted by LA2Philly, Sun Nov-10-13 01:13 PM
Sagna with the perfect cross and instead of getting on his front foot, Bendtner dillies around and of course the ball eludes him by about half a hard. Could have knicked a result.
2259820, Even with the loss, we played a pretty solid game esp defensively
Posted by LA2Philly, Sun Nov-10-13 01:31 PM
Very organized and worked hard to cut out space...going forward, missed so many passes. The most dangerous threat was Sagna on the right and he laced in some great crosses...the last of which Bendtner should have gotten to.

Lots of credit to ManU....they worked extremely extremely hard. The game was extremely important for them and it showed in their work-rate, easily the highest of the season. Cazorla and Ozil had no real space and when they did have chances to put in their patented unlocking passes (esp Ozil), they weren't sharp. RVP with a great goal but Rooney was the best overall player on the pitch today, by a wide margin. His stamina and energy were just amazing.

Obviously was hoping for a better result but the game was still very encouraging, tons of composure from the back 5. The one adjustment I would make going forward is to either start or introduce width into the lineup so the defense isn't so content to just play a narrow shape which is what ManU did. Gnabry's introduction finally gave us a serious threat out wide and ManU wasn't sure what to do with him running out wide.
2259859, Ehh Utd wanted it more, still great week

hope it isn't the beginning of the physical decline. still super young, but the tread on the tire has to be getting worn.
