Gotta run to work, so no time for my own opinions/comments,
but thought this was a great article for discussion here.

While I could never side with baiting idiots like Mushnick, I'm not going to pretend the fact that ne never actually met his 'son' doesn't change the context quite a bit or side-eyeing AP saying 'when you lose a son, it's a very difficult thing' in interviews.

Stripped from the legal/paternity-test/financial-obligations, Manti Teo & Lennay Kekua had a deeper relationship than AP & this son.

And this article was a patronizing & plea-copping mess that I won't even bother going in on.

an example of perfect (or even desirable) moral character.

but we knew that.

that the finger-pointing by the Mushnick-like opportunists is obviously awful but I'm also put off by some of the pandering/plea-copping on the other side as well.

It does feel awkward to hear AP talking about losing a son he never knew while certain fawning media & fans pretend it was something it wasn't.

That's all.

and it seemed like all three were getting along.

acknowledged his son long before his actual birth and without a paternity test, mothered by a woman he had just been in a three-year-relationship with plus has partial custody of the kid.

AP meanwhile just acknowledged this kid's existence, never met him while alive & reportedly has at least 5 other out-of-wedlock kids that the public knows about.

..its apparent that the press ran with a bunch of bullshit, and no one outside of AP and the mothers of his children know the real deal.

all parties involved stated that he didn't even know about the child until recently, so there's really no reason to start pointing fingers. he's certainly not the first man to have children with different women.

everyone wants a story, but lost in all of this is the fact that a child died in a senseless tragedy, at the hands of a monster.

AP asked that people allow them to deal with this privately. is that such a stretch?

The article has very little to do with AP as a person. It is
simply highlighting a media frame that uses such a tragedy to
push a faulty "personal responsibility" agenda that obscures
social and economic realities. A lot of media commentators and
writers have seized this story as an opportunity to make up a
shitty moral tale about the general lack of morality among black
fathers in America.

I agree that we should stay out of the personal lives of others,
especially in a situation so tragic. What this article highlights
is that the people who are sticking their noses in AP's lives are
the very people who buy into this regressive, small-picture frame
of "personal responsibility" that only serves to project a false
image of black fathers as "the problem". When media frames stories
this way, it sweeps real social and economic issues under the
rug while promoting an agenda of character assault and finger
pointing (the mainstream media's way of avoiding having the public
educated about actual problems in society).

like pointing out the tea partiers are racist, it's pretty much gotten to the point that people either already know, or never will accept the knowledge.

It starts with Peterson's situation & one third of the way in spin-moves into a tale of black folks living along or under the poverty line when obviously that's not a group to which Adrian Peterson belongs.

And the pandering, condescending 'just because they don't live with their children doesn't mean they're not in their lives' part of the article when it features AP's name in its headline addressing his now-dead son who he had never met is problematic at best.

THIS THEN begs the question of why many fathers do find it difficult to remain involved in a stable and long-term way. The answer to this has to begin with the reality of the high levels of Black unemployment and poverty. A 2007 study found that the ability of Black fathers to provide the majority of the financial support is the key determinant of whether he stays in the home.
