2230098, College Football Sat 9/14 - GAME OF THE CENTURY #23423 Posted by cgonz00cc, Sat Sep-14-13 11:12 AM
Saban (15-2 in revenge games) vs Johnny Football (100-0 in not giving a fuck) - i like bama
UCLA vs NEB - gimme the Huskers at home
Loouhvull vs Kaintuckee for the Commonwealth something or other, hope the scoreboard operator ate his wheaties
Tennessee goes west to Oregon. UT is on the right track but today will not be a great day for them
3 more B1G-PAC12 matchups U-DUB vs the Zookers Wisky vs ASU tosu vs Cal
the sarkies will be the only ones to successfully defend the honor of the pac 12
bonus game with the potential of souring the whole season in week 3: GT vs Duke. Please god, spare your bespectacled, pocket-protecting children the indignity of NOT sweeping the north carolina teams this year. thx.

2230103, You're right about us. Posted by BennyTenStack, Sat Sep-14-13 11:22 AM
We're on the come up, but today..............I'll be pretty happy if we cover the spread. IF we can run the ball on them, I think we can keep it within 28, which would not be bad considering how good Oregon is supposed to be. It's a win-win for Butch Jones. If we get blown out, whatever...we're supposed to get blown out. If we keep it close, though, it sends a huge message.
|
2230105, Ive been a Butch fan since the CMU days Posted by cgonz00cc, Sat Sep-14-13 11:42 AM
And I agree re: running the ball
I expect Neal and Lane to divvy up ~40 carries

your vaunted OL vs a now NASTY Oregon defensive line. If you can get through the DL, our interior backers are too small to consistently stuff your running game.
But this Oregon DL is playing really well right now - and they are the most talented bunch Oregon has ever had in my mind.

Still a long way to go in this ucla game. I want Nebraska to win but that Nebraska defense is capable of giving up this lead and right on queue their DL misses a sack and allows ucla to score a TD right before half.
I just hope Cals offense can keep the game close tonight because our defense is injured and a disaster.

It really shouldn't matter. Cals defense is suffering from a lot of injuries and I am not sold on Buh as our DC.
Our only hope is that our offense can score and that the defense can force a few turnovers to help keep it close.

between Cal and Oregon...
I think it's only going to get better too.
Sark explained to the media this week that he's now got his players grabbing the ball and handing it off to the official when the play is over, and that it's just one thing they're doing to be "innovative"
I am going to love kicking the living shit out of his fraudulent ass program for the 10th straight year.
|
2230163, I really hope you guys kick the shit out of them again this season Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-14-13 01:10 PM
I just hope we can finally break this losing streak to them.
I wonder if SC goes after Sark in the off season to replace Kiffin? I think Wilcox is gone after this season, which is a good thing because he is a good coach and has improved UWs defense.
|
2230172, I've been wondering that too Posted by sfMatt, Sat Sep-14-13 01:21 PM
It would be hilarious watching SC secure a mediocre coach while stealing all of the misplaced "hope" the Montlake fanbase has bought into

step slow on defense and not sharp on offense..
in reality...Nebraska should not be able to do a lot against UCLA's defense.....now that we up to speed ..you can see this..
this is not a close game at all.... UCLA is a much more talented team on both sides of the ball..
|
2230208, Baloney, UCLA's D is not special Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Sat Sep-14-13 01:59 PM
78th in the country last year IIRC
It's better than UNL's right now but that's a 2 foot hurdle
I do realize you being remotely objective about your team has never happened in the history of OKPS
|
2230211, I agree but it has improved, especially along the DL Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-14-13 02:02 PM
Where that defense is vulnerable is in the secondary and Martinez was able to exploit that in the first half.
However, Martinez isn't a consistent enough passer to continue to take advantage of the bruins secondary.
|
2230216, Yea I'd say our D is above average but not special Posted by MothershipConnection, Sat Sep-14-13 02:05 PM
I think our D was a bit better than the numbers last year and is better this year (we have some really, really good athletes at the LB spot), but our DL still doesn't get off blocks and our DBs are inexperienced, though I do like how the DBs have played so far this season. You guys were pounding us on the LOS in the 1st half though and I thought we might be on the ropes but you guys went away from that and momentum swung.
|
2230219, Yep, thank you Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Sat Sep-14-13 02:11 PM

2230252, lol...you say baloney than go on to co-sign what I said... Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sat Sep-14-13 02:47 PM
>78th in the country last year IIRC > >It's better than UNL's right now but that's a 2 foot hurdle
I said that we were much much better on both sides of the ball than NEBRASKA...which is the team whose ass we just whupped...
>I do realize you being remotely objective about your team has >never happened in the history of OKPS
here's the thing.... I actually speak on what I see....people who go contrary make comments about a team they never actually see play....thus your use of UCLA's defensive rank as evidence of our defense being less than I said it was...
The fact that I'm a UCLA fan has nothing to do with me saying that UCLA has some of the best linebackers in the pac 12 or the country because that's an opinion that is shared by much of the college football media who is actually watching the games...
you're speaking about last year..... well the NFL saw Dontae Jones as a pretty good player
now on to this season...
Anthony Barr would have been a high 2nd or low 1st round pick last year..
after this year I fully expect him to be one of the 1st LBs..if not THE first LB taken in the next draft...
but besides Barr....we are FULL of very solid Defensive players.....again I wouldn't expect people who don't regularly watch UCLA to know this...but let me inform you.....that is if you need further proof after we just beat the shit out of Nebraska on the road in front of the largest home crowd they've ever had....
Cassius Marsh.... got to love a White dude named Cassius...but he up up big numbers last year and has been ballin in our first 2 games...
Owamagbe Odighizuwa.......Big Ellis McCarthy.....Eric Kendricks and Jordan Zumwalt.....
UCLA's front 7 is more than solid...vetern group with some solid youngsters mixed in...
and btw we are about to offer one of the top under the radar defenders in high school right now in Gardena Serra's Olajuwan Tucker...a DE/LB hybrid with great size and speed....
UCLA is solid on both sides of the ball...
the more you watch..the more you'll see that..

2230296, Dude is in here talking about Owamagbe and he isn't even playing Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-14-13 03:10 PM
And this is supposed to be his squad.
Cassius is solid but nothing special. Barr is their best DL and Zumwalt is also average. The only LB that ucla has with any really talent is Kendricks.
|
2230318, I'm aware Owamagbe isn't playing..... my point was that Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sat Sep-14-13 03:36 PM
saying UCLA's D-line is just a bunch of freshman is just not accurate.....we went into the season with vet starters and freshman who were highly sought after recruits as their back ups......
we've had to play these freshman dude to injuries and as part of our regular D-line rotation......But we did not have an inexperienced depth chart going into the season and we have a solid mix of vets and young guys now...
and I'm not saying Marsh is an all American..but anyone saying he's insignificant to this defense has not watching much of our games last year or the first 2 this year.

I'm talking about watching UCLA every game...when I speak on them..I'm speaking on what I know....
and I know enough to know that Nebraska's defense over the last couple of years doesn't have the players like Donate Jones .....Anthony Barr.....White Cassius....Erick Kendricks....and Zumwalt...
UCLA just has better players on defense...
dude use google if you want to...you acting like I'm pullin this shit out of thin air.... all I'm doing is telling you something that is widely accepted throughout the country in both college and pertaining to NFL draft scouting..
> > >>The fact that I'm a UCLA fan has nothing to do with me >saying >>that UCLA has some of the best linebackers in the pac 12 or >>the country because that's an opinion that is shared by much >>of the college football media who is actually watching the >>games... >> > >You secondary is below average, your DL is a bunch of >Freshman, again solid D, nothing special...forced turnovers, >gave up heaps of yards
nope...
our secondary lacks experience, but has not demonstrated anything close to a below average performance wise...nor projection wise as far as the players we got back there..... actually UCLA pretty regularly puts a solid secondary together...we got starters in the NFL in the secondary right today..
and you need to get your facts straight about our D-line....Cassius Marsh is a SENIOR on our D-line and is going as high as the 3rd round on ....our other starting SENIOR on the D-line is Seali'i Epenesa.... our Freshman provide depth...but All 3 of them are very very highly recruited and talented players who are making plays this season already...Nose tackle Kenny Clark and defensive ends Kylie Fitts and Eddie Vanderdoes
we got vets starting.....and talented freshman adding depth..... with one of the best line backing corps in the conference and country behind them...
our front 7 is right where they out to be right now...

again dude...if you don't you don't know about UCLA football..you shouldn't make comment like UCLA has nothing besides Barr at LB....
let's look at the facts...both Jordan Zumwalt and Erick Kendricks are projected to be NFL draft picks around the 3rd or 4th round....
and our other outside back Aaron Wallace Jr. is a soph more.. 3 or 4 star recruit depending on who you listen too.....pops was an NFL linebacker .... he's a talented young players surrounded by solid defenders and with a defensive minded coach...
we more than straight at LB...
> >>but besides Barr....we are FULL of very solid Defensive >>players.....again I wouldn't expect people who don't >regularly >>watch UCLA to know this...but let me inform you.....that is >if >>you need further proof after we just beat the shit out of >>Nebraska on the road in front of the largest home crowd >>they've ever had.... >> >>Cassius Marsh.... got to love a White dude named >Cassius...but >>he up up big numbers last year and has been ballin in our >>first 2 games... > >Solid player...he's Baker Steinkuhler from last year for NU, >solid, nothing special >> >>Owamagbe Odighizuwa.......Big Ellis McCarthy.....Eric >>Kendricks and Jordan Zumwalt..... >> >Owamagbe is injured and not playing, jury is out on young >Ellis, looked good in spots, those other two guys are filler >and don't matter

2230187, Jim Mora's ability to make adjustments ....is one of UCLA's Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sat Sep-14-13 01:43 PM
biggest weapons.....
especially now that his talent level on the both sides of the ball is gonna be on par with most if not all the teams we play....

UCLA is a much better team on both sides of the ball

|
2230198, Nebraska defense is nothing but Frosh in the front 7 Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Sat Sep-14-13 01:48 PM
for some reason calling a bunch of passes and running hurry up is considered a good idea
this game is on the OC as much as anything
|
2230193, Yep, I agree, good adjustments Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Sat Sep-14-13 01:47 PM
having UNL going away from the run when the OL is owning the line of scrimmage helps too
|
2230201, Yeah good adjustments but as you said it is also on the NU OC Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-14-13 01:51 PM
Who went away from the running game and decided to go pass happy.
|
2230206, yep and do you need to run hurry up Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Sat Sep-14-13 01:58 PM
if the OL is winning the line of scrimmage battles?
keep the ball in the O's hands in lengthy drives to keep your inexperienced D on the field

2230199, LOL @ that husker lineman running the fake punt Posted by Flash80, Sat Sep-14-13 01:49 PM
if dude follows his blocker's butt instead of trying to get cute, it's a first down.
|
2230203, Yep it was a good call, well executed, and had blockers out in front Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-14-13 01:53 PM
But the OL decides to bounce it outside instead if turning inside.
If he just goes inside he gets the first down with ease.
|
2230202, UCLA slow start + hangover was not the way to start a morning Posted by MothershipConnection, Sat Sep-14-13 01:52 PM
But I made a nice breakfast and we started playing better and we're looking legit. This is the fastest UCLA defense I've seen in a long while... but I wish our DL could get off blocks faster.
|
2230205, Martinez needs to take off and run a bit more Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-14-13 01:54 PM
|
2230207, Big time play from Anthony Barr there Posted by MothershipConnection, Sat Sep-14-13 01:59 PM
He still needs to use his hands better, but to take on two blockers in the run game and make the play... that's huge.
|
2230217, Ellis McCarthy is playing well and looks to be greatly improved Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-14-13 02:06 PM
I wish Cal could have held onto him, we could really have used him on defense.
|
2230226, He came along slower than I thought Posted by MothershipConnection, Sat Sep-14-13 02:17 PM
But he's looked pretty good this season. Still needs to get off blocks a bit better but I'm liking the future of our front 7. McCarthy, Vanderdoes, Jack, even our backup LBs can fly. Spanos is a lot more creative than our previous DCs too.
I'm rooting for Cal with Dykes as coach BTW. I've been a fan of his, that Pac-12 North is rough this year but I think they'll come together in the 2nd half and pull some upsets.

So far, pretty nice game for Pitt. A lot of other freshmen have made some big plays, and Boyd has hauled in some crazy catches. Hopefully they don't let New Mexico get any closer. A blowout win would be nice.

After the first game of the season since he was the backup QB.
I'm sure someone (truth) will hawk him now.
|
2230223, Congrats to UCLA on a well-played game Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Sat Sep-14-13 02:16 PM
down 21-3 early, made the necessary adjustments and waited for the 'Husker self-inflicted errors that have been a hallmark of Pelini coached teams
I'm wondering if it' going to get harder to sell the vision to recruits although I do believe there is a lot of talent on defense for NU, it's just so very young right now
|
2230232, How much time does Pelini have left at Nebraska? Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-14-13 02:23 PM
|
2230236, I think Papuchis on DC has a short leash Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Sat Sep-14-13 02:26 PM
he's learning on the job
if Pelini, like Callahan, won't let Cosgrove/Papuchis fall on the sword.....he still has a few years
the schedule is too easy the next two years, can't fire a 9 or 10 win coach
unless the fans start not showing up and big donors like Dan Cook of Goldman Sachs start rumbling
I still say he needs a 7-7 year like Solich to be sent packing
|
2230240, The schedule might be easy but Nebraska is going to be breaking in Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-14-13 02:31 PM
A new QB next season. Who does Nebraska have lined up at QB?
|
2230244, Tommy Armstrong Jr. Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Sat Sep-14-13 02:35 PM

not quite as fast as Taylor but can move

Colt. Man. He's a superhuman and he thinks he can get away with a ton of shit because of it. And for the most part he's right. I think it's finally catching him.

not good at all. but if they are gonna biff one at least they won and can move on from it.

2230264, Let me clarify....we just beat the shit out of Nebraska in front Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sat Sep-14-13 02:57 PM
of their largest home crowd in history...
I told you that we run Los Angeles..
I been telling you since last year this was a team and a program on the rise...
I'm telling you this year that UCLA's defense..specifically our line backing corp is more than solid...
I been telling you our QB was one of the best in the country.....his QB rating right now speaks for itself.....
I'm telling you that our weapons on offense... particularly our RB depth is more than solid.... (I'd argue we have as deep a group of RBs as there is in the country with James, Perkins, Jones and Manfro...and probably our best RB Thigpin hasn't even played yet this year)
muhufkkas can say it's just college riding for his team...
but every thing I been saying is coming to pass..
Peep game......

Can't believe how hyped they are. 9-3 at best. LSU gonna hang half a hundo on em. Same ol SEC, aint a damn thing changed. Get a defense or sit the fuck down Aggies.

2230391, Most coaches usage of timeouts is comically bad Posted by J_Stew, Sat Sep-14-13 05:22 PM
Not calling one when they only gained 5 yards on 1st down and blowing 15 seconds to run the next play is just so ridiculous. Anyone that is good at Madden can manage timeouts better than most coaches.

2230506, Thoroughly disappointed in the defense today. Posted by Mignight Maruder, Sat Sep-14-13 10:11 PM
Db's were playing soft in coverage and provided horrible run support.
Lb's were engaging or getting engulfed by blockers instead of attacking the line of scrimmage. None of our stud pass rushers (Deion Barnes and Daqwan Jones) could get to their QB. 2 of the guys - DT Kyle Baublitz and Lb Ben Kline - I coached against and scouted years back. Not the best game for either guy unfortunately.
Some positives: the maturation of Hackenberg. For an 18 year old true Freshman to play this well is incredible. It's rare you see a young true pocket passing QB experience so much success so quickly. He will still experience some bumps this year, but you gotta love where he's at right now.
Allen Robinson is so fun to watch. Put up monster numbers despite being held virtually all game long. Could have, and really should have, 3 touchdowns tonight. I thought the O-line looked decent tonight as well.
I knew this game could go either way. I just wasn't prepared to see our Defense get carved up all game long.
|
2230457, Cals defense playing about as bad as I thought they would but the offense Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-14-13 07:55 PM

the national championship. You guys are blessed with two really good QBs and a great coach.
The offensive future looks bright, the defense on the other hand just looks lost. I know we have a lot of injuries to defensive players and you guys are a top 5 team but it is really bad right now.

2231107, i was actually wondering if SC would target Shaw Posted by 3xKrazy, Sun Sep-15-13 04:26 PM

Shaw or Strong would be slam dunk hires...only drawback would that neither have roots in Texas as far as recruiting goes.

2230684, They reported that there was the third largest crowd in history there. Posted by MEAT, Sun Sep-15-13 09:43 AM
The disconnect between some people is outstanding. My team has sucked for years, failed to develop talent, refusing to develop a philosophy for the defense or offense for years. The ad thumbs his nose at you, the coach does the same but worse and your only recourse is to talk with dollars. So what happens? Number one sales in sports gear and record ticket gates as your players give up on the field, and your team performs way below the statistical talent mean.
I can watch a sorry team, I sat through my niners years my sonics years and I've rooted ironically for the royals for a while now. But to watch quitting and ineptitude, I have better things to do with my time.

Yes, home cookin. None of that should have happened. Here was a whistle to blow play dead. If there was a question about fumble where was mandatory. Booth review. Refs stood there and then left. Absolute bullshit. Can't believe we didn't have a shot to win.
|
2231138, It was dumb to cut it that close. Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Sun Sep-15-13 05:00 PM
Stave was dumb not to go to a knee. Yes it was a shitstorm of confusion and stupidity at thend but when you are playing a game on the road like that you don't let it get to that point.
You have that little faith in your kickers that moving the hashmark a little bit was going to make the difference? They were well within range at that point.
I agre there should have been a few seconds left, but Wisconsin really did some boneheaded things at the end.

for the ref to allow the defender to lay on the ball like that...then stand over the ball after the guy gets up tell Wisconsin to wait ....all while the clock was running...

|
2231520, our kickers are really inconsistent, exactly why we took a knee to line up Posted by temps2020, Mon Sep-16-13 10:47 AM
>I personally see it as lack of faith in the Badger kicking >game, when you have no timeouts on the road you don't take >that chance
final kick. they practice this every week. refs just blew it and ran off the field. no need to rush the kick when there's 18 seconds left to knee and spike.
|
2230644, yeah, two teams trying their hardest to lose that game at the end Posted by will_5198, Sun Sep-15-13 01:36 AM
insane play-calling on ASU's last drive...and for Wisconsin, the number one rule in late-game time preservation is that you ALWAYS hand the ball back to an official. leaving on the ground after a run or a catch is what lets that kind of shit happen.

|
2231517, replys show he took a knee, then set the balal down, refs were thrown Posted by temps2020, Mon Sep-16-13 10:45 AM
off by ASU defense saying a fumble and they didn't set the ball after their whistle, which is audible in reply bc they saw the knee. we had 14 seconds left to hike and spike but ASU sat on ball and refs looked bewildered. Where was the fucking replay if they were so confused?
|
2230647, Exactly! Posted by temps2020, Sun Sep-15-13 02:21 AM
That's a delay of game. Refs did not give us our chance to spike which we had plenty of time to after whistle. We wanted to line kick up in middle cuz or kickers are awful. Refs have to have control of game and can't let a complaining or distracting team disrupt the end of the game. Refs wer clueless. Stave dicked up to by not just straight taking a knee but at the end we were ready to spoke and ASU is laying on the ball as refs stand there confused in the commotion. Now whistle to stop clock and regroup. Another end of game debacle for Badgers.

fans left the stadium early, donors are angry, Tommie Frazier ripped the staff in a Tweet yesterday (not that he didn't fall on his face coaching at a Nebraska small college)
Pelini now owns 6 of the Top 10 biggest blowout losses in Nebraska history
I think he needs a Michigan pelt and BCS bowl berth to keep the wolves from the door
