Dez Bryant says ‘Hell yeah, I’ll be mad’ if NCAA doesn’t suspend Johnny Manziel

Dez Bryant is suspicious of the NCAA, and for good reason.

Everyone should be suspicious of the NCAA, whose inconsistent rulings and hypocrisy are maddening, but Bryant has a personal reason. A legal dinner at Deion Sanders' house turned into Bryant being suspended for most of the 2009 season. The NCAA suspended Bryant for not disclosing what happened when he met Sanders.

So now Bryant, a star receiver with the Dallas Cowboys, is closely watching what happens with the Johnny Manziel autograph scandal.

Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, is being investigated for possibly signing thousands of autographs for money. That would be a far worse violation than a meal with a former NFL star, which is why Bryant is already getting a bit agitated. Not because he has an issue with Manziel – Bryant made it very clear he has no problem at all with the Texas A&M quarterback – but he has a problem with the NCAA if it doesn't punish Manziel after what it did to him.

"Hell yeah, I’ll be mad," Bryant said, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "I will be mad. But I don’t want him to get suspended. I will be mad more at the NCAA on how they do things. I just feel like it’s not fair. This is something I have no problem talking about because I feel like somebody needs to say something to him and let it be known how they treat people is not right."

That's an understandable reaction, given what Bryant went through.

Bryant admits his wrongdoing back when he was at Oklahoma State. He told the Star-Telegram he lied to the NCAA because the investigator frightened him into believing he did something wrong when he met Sanders. He then told the truth but the suspension was never lifted.

And again, this isn't about Manziel in Bryant's mind. In fact, he thinks that Manziel should be allowed to sell his autograph.

"He should be able to sign as many autographs and make as much money as he wants, because it’s his name," Bryant said to the Star-Telegram. "I feel like he’s the one who created it. He should be able to do whatever he feels as long as it’s legal and I don’t think there’s anything illegal about signing a picture of yourself and making money off himself. Shoot, the NCAA is making money off of it when they’re selling those No. 2 shirts. Why can’t he make a little bit of money off of it?"

Bryant obviously doesn't know the core philosophy of the NCAA and college sports, which is that everyone shall make money off college athletes except the college athletes themselves. And once that rule is met, the next rule is to do whatever you can to make even more money off them. More realignment, anyone?

Bryant is an unlikely voice of reason in battling the vile and exploitative business of college sports, but it makes sense. He's one of the best examples of the NCAA's haphazard way of enforcing its archaic rules.

"I don’t want anything to happen to Manziel, I promise," Bryant said, according to the Star-Telegram. "I don’t want anything. I just want them to know what they’re doing is not right. That’s all they need to know and they need to understand that. Seriously. They really do."

vs non established. Bryant played for Oklahoma State, a program without much of a winning history or big tradition. If Bryant plays for Oklahoma I doubt he is suspended.

If Manziel played for Iowa State he probably gets suspended.

From what I recall Bryant didn't do anything other than have dinner with Sanders. Pryor and the other OSU kids actually traded stuff for things. I am not saying what they did was wrong but it isn't apple to apples.

The thing that killed OSU was all the email correspondence, without those emails those OSU players don't see such a long suspension.

What fucked OSU was Tressel knew they sold shit, didnt report it, and let them play the season out. He got what he deserved, and so did we (a 10.1 Violation is SERIOUS). I honestly thought we'd get a two year bowl ban.

The villification of Tressel and TOSU during the whole thing was hilarious. even more so after we found out what state penn, miami, and unc were up to.

(glad he lied, btw. gave us a chance to reboot with some new blood with minimal damage)


edit, Dez got a raw deal too. but he shouldnt have lied to the NCAA interrogator. they hate that shit...Bruce Pearl knows.

NCAA has to actually finish the investigation and DO something before anyone can say they've been treated differently.

"give em the benefit of the doubt and let's see how this plays out" is a privilege.

And they both got, or are getting, investigated.... So I don't see what special privilege Manziel is getting from the NCAA now that Dez didn't get.

no sense in having a semantic argument about those bumps hurting his career.

they suspended him because they wanted to talk about shit he did that wasn't even wrong, and they scared him, and he handled it poorly.

same thing that got Bruce Pearl fired / show caused.

Manziel is more analogous to Newton. it's assumed both took money, but nobody who wants to can prove it.

Outrage level too high for facts.

and it's okay to call that foul considering the organization's inconsistencies and tactics.

they wanted him to talk then. he has a right to talk about it now.

I agree that Bryant and A.J. Green were targeted, in part because they were thought to be dealing with agents. that said, the NCAA interviewed Bryant twice (weeks apart) -- and he lied both times. if he had been forthright, he would've gotten a nominal suspension like Manziel did, if at all.

just like if Manziel had denied being at any of those signings this off-season, he'd be gone for 2013. Bryant's suspension was his fault and Oklahoma State's for not having him better informed.

and acted like it. manziel clearly has no reason to be scared and is acting accordingly as well. we know that, other than their reactions to the ncaa, manziel has done as bad as dez did.

it doesn't mean dez shouldn't have been suspended for lying or that he did nothing wrong. but it is some bullshit. which is basically what dez said.

so fuck him, his feelings & BShelly's fantasy team.
