http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1603118-kobe-bryant-injury-updates-on-lakers-stars-leg

UPDATE: Monday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. ET by Brandon Galvin

NBA.com's Jonathan Hartzell passes along Kobe's latest thoughts on his recovery:

'The surgical procedure was different and because of that the recovery has been different,' Bryant said in the southern city of Shenzhen. 'The normal timetable for recovery from an Achilles, we’ve shattered that. Three-and-a-half months I can already walk just fine, I’m lifting weights with the Achilles just fine and that’s different. So we don’t know what that timetable is going to be. It’s kind of new territory for us all.'

"...it is a monstrous thing, to slay a unicorn," said Firenze. "Only one who has nothing to lose, and everything to gain, would commit such a crime. The blood of a unicorn will keep you alive, even if you are an inch from death, but at a terrible price. You have slain something so pure and defenceless to save yourself and you will have but a half life, a cursed life, from the moment the blood touches your lips."

Harry stared at the back of Firenze's head, which was dappled silver in the moonlight.

"But who'd be that desperate?" he wondered aloud.

...

"Can you think of nobody who has waited many years to return to power, who has clung to life, awaiting their chance?"

...

"Do you mean," Harry croaked, "that was Kob--"

2217011, how do we measure success for 35 yo Kobe after an achilles tear?
Posted by laizquierda, Thu Aug-08-13 01:24 AM
the season he had last year was amazing, and people really
don't acknowledge how nice it was

27 6 and 6, 2nd overall in minutes played

look at some of these streaks:

Dec 2 - Jan 15

34, 39, 29, 35, 34, 42, 31, 30, 34, 30, 30, 34, 34, 40, 27, 36,
38, 29, 20, 27, 28, 23, 31

Feb 22 - Mar 8

40, 38, 29, 33, 34, 30, 42, 41...

Mar 25 - Apr 12

36, 31, 30, 19 & 14ast, 23 & 11ast, 24 & 9ast, 25 & 10ast, 30, 47, 34

now, to come back from an injury that has historically been the most
devastating for NBA players--especially players over the age of 30...

even if he's "only" 20 5 & 5 on 45% playing 30 minutes a game, that'd be good.
anything approaching his career average would be astonishing.
Nique tore his achilles in his 11th season. Kobe's came in his 17th.

so, I think 20 5 5 in 30 is a fair benchmark

2217138, Rupturing the same achillies twice is extremely rare....
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Thu Aug-08-13 11:34 AM
the major problem with recovery from an achillies is the atrophy that occurs in the leg and the over compensation for the other leg during the process of getting the strength back...

a guy like Stanley Roberts reputred both achillies on seperate occasions and I believe one of them twice...but he was not a lean in-shape athelete so thus there was added stress on his leg tendons and the like..

Kobe..if he rehabs this how I know he will as far as gaining equal leg strength and utilizing extreme stretching and yoga type of things in the process..along with weight training....if done properly...his legs will actually be STRONGER in the end then they were last year, and the risk of that same injury is drasticlly decreased...

I can tell a couple of things from this pic.... There is not a lot of atrophy..and not a whole lot of scar tissue build up around the scar.....

but it's obvious he's got a lot of work ahead of him as far as building up the strength in his lower legs....

but just from what I can see and what I've seen in other people this far removed from that surgery....he's either at...or close to being at the point where he can start to go hard building up his legs....he shouldn't rush back though...but I think being in the starting line up for the opening game is more than just wishful thinking
2217747, lol this is the most stanery i've ever seen in a singular reply
