2213814, Showtime Boxing.....Keith Thurman got his hands full...
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sat Jul-27-13 08:35 PM
Chaves is giving him the business..

close fight through 5...

Berto fighting later...
2213818, Wow, I thought that was gonna be called low by Thurman...
Posted by BlassFemur, Sat Jul-27-13 08:52 PM
but he might have just pulled this fight out with that body shot.

Replay shows it definitely wasn't low though. Good call by the ref.
2213819, Thurman better take his time moving up the WW division...
Posted by BlassFemur, Sat Jul-27-13 08:58 PM
cause he ain't even close to ready.
2213821, hes ready...why wait....fought a very tough
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sat Jul-27-13 09:03 PM
Guy and crumbled him with a body shot... no reason to hold him back. 1 more fight then the big time
2213853, Nah, he'll get mopped against a legit WW.
Posted by BlassFemur, Sat Jul-27-13 11:15 PM
his defense is bad and he's hella sloppy.
2213864, I disagree...he could beat Devon Alexander right today..
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sun Jul-28-13 12:20 AM
who is the IBF welterweight titleholder and ranked 5th in ring magazine...or even fight a Robert Guerrero..

he'd be ready for any right today...

that would set him up maybe for the winner of Marquez and Bradley or #3 in ring magazine Kell Brook...

of course that's all setting up a future pay per view with Adrien Bonner...

Thurman is right at the verge...he's ready to step up .
2213918, Yeah, he could beat Alexander though.
Posted by BlassFemur, Sun Jul-28-13 09:59 AM
but I think Guerrero gives him a tough fight. I think today Thurman loses to every top guy except for Alexander, Malignaggi and Berto. Maybe even Guerrero. I think that's a toss-up.

He just doesn't seem polished enough to take that leap, in my opinion. I feel like if he's in with a guy that knows who he is as a fighter and can make adjustments even at a decent clip, Thurman would be outclassed, exposed and probably KO'd cause he was getting hit too flush by this dude he fought last night.
2214062, U buggin. He barely ever got hit flush after the 4th round.

even when the announcers were hypin shit up, i watched it in slow mo and Keith was just gettin grazed most times.

that's another big time quality he showed last night- the ability to... not absorb the full impact of punches. if u got a DVR watch some of those exchanges in slow motion. Thurman boxed beautifully last night!
2213835, Agreed. He should take it slow. Sharpen up that defense.

2214061, Nah son, Kieth ready.
Posted by thebadnegro, Sun Jul-28-13 11:11 PM
he passed every test of a potential champion:

ability to take punches (from a power puncher)

ability to make adjustments on the fly and out-think a smart opponent.

beautiful, Pacquiao-esque footwork

the stamina to punch with power in the championship rounds.

what i think ur doing is underestimating his opponent. Chavez can fucking fight. i think he runs thru the bottom half of the Ring Mag top 10 welterweights, and troubles some of the top half. i could easily see him kicking Guerrero's ass. Kell Brook would get it too, tho idk how the hell he's in any top 5.

i guess we won't know how big this win is for Thurman until we see Chavez against some of these other guys, but i.m.o. One Time is among the elite WWs right now. my top 10:

1. Floyd

2. Pac (i know he got KOd but i'd still pick him to beat JMM 7.5 times outta 10)

3. JMM

4. KIETH

6. Bradley/Provodnikov

7. Matthysse (yup. soon as he KOs Garcia and moves up he'll be right here, if not higher).

8. Guerrero

9. Maidana

10. Khan/Broner/Soto Karass

2214064, Thurman is in a prime position right now...

he could challenge a couple of guys that you don't have on your personal list but who are ranked pretty high like Devon Alexaneder and Kell Brook..... High reward low risk...plus obtain some hardware....then by that time ...because of his age...he basically hold all the cards in the division.... The vets..if they still got something left and want to take the risk..they got to fukk with Thurman....the younger guys....would have to fukk with him to unify the belts in the division..... plus that gives him leverage in a future pay per view vs. Bronner...

Thurman holds the cards right now for the future of that division.
2213822, Good fight

Both guys were playing chess. I liked Chavez--calm, tactical, well-schooled. Thurman is a bit more hectic but he's a smarter fighter than he seems to get credit for, and he was just the more dynamic guy. Those 2-3 big exchanges they had each round were just great stuff, even when both guys were evading each other's shots. It felt like someone was going to get through eventually. Didn't expect it to be a body shot though...good on Thurman, nice win.
2213825, I have it on mute...is there something wrong with Figueroa?
Posted by Lightfoot, Sat Jul-27-13 09:27 PM
Did the announcers mention anything? Because he looks awful.
2213827, I have no idea how Arakawa is still standing.

2213995, that fight was insane the punches never stopped
Posted by las raises, Sun Jul-28-13 04:14 PM
2213854, Berto has to go retire. He's not good at all.
Posted by BlassFemur, Sat Jul-27-13 11:17 PM
2213861, pretty exciting card...
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sun Jul-28-13 12:09 AM
my man Berto should probably hang it up. He showed heart..but he's simply too easy to hit in the head right now...

Figueroa and dude had a super battle...but damn Figueroa won't be long for this without some defense...

Thurman showed that he's ready to take another step..he came back and beat a very tough fighter...took him out.

2213941, First time I ever saw Chaves fight. I was really impressed even tho
Posted by southphillyman, Sun Jul-28-13 12:13 PM
he took the L
i think he could give a lot of the 140-147 trouble based off those first 4 rounds
that was the first time i think i've ever seen Thurman look scared like he knew he couldn't just out physical someone in the ring
speaking of thurman, he showed me he is more than just an athlete in the ring. didn't know he had that cerebral aspect to his game. the 2nd half adjustment he made was brillant. if he tightens up his defense i think he could dominate. i think he has a higher ceiling than broner for instance, but we'll see

as far as berto. meh
tons of heart but his career is over. he was in trouble multiple times BEFORE he hurt his shoulder. i've seen karass fight before and i don't remember him having the kind of power it seemed he had last night. i think berto's chin is just done at this point. he looked like jermaine taylor in there smh
2213942, Berto looked like he was in survival mode during his ring walk...
Posted by BlassFemur, Sun Jul-28-13 12:17 PM
he's definitely done. I'm not sure why he couldn't get over the hurdle in his career. I still think one of his biggest mistakes was staying at WW instead of dropping down to JWW. I feel that's where he should have been all along.
2214001, Lack of skill development. He never got better.
Posted by Radio Rahim, Sun Jul-28-13 04:38 PM
His uppercut was his only power punch and even that wasn't that big at WW.

He's like a more physically gifted Paulie but without any elite boxing skills

>he's definitely done. I'm not sure why he couldn't get over
>the hurdle in his career. I still think one of his biggest
>mistakes was staying at WW instead of dropping down to JWW. I

2213944, Chaves is gonna get some big fights for himself...
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sun Jul-28-13 12:31 PM
he's a solid boxer....solid defense too...

in hindsight that really was the perfect challenge for Thurman because he had to adjust and fight back to win the fight...

lots of solid match ups in that weight class in the future...
2214035, Is Larry Merchant back with HBO?
Posted by las raises, Sun Jul-28-13 08:25 PM
He did the fights they had on HBO yesterday
2214048, George Foreman was annoucning too...
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sun Jul-28-13 09:42 PM
didn't sound bad at all.
