Wingmanus nyquilius or "The Nyquil Wing"


Usually very gifted athletically with a wide breadth of skills. They don't appear like they are trying particularly hard and often aren't. Personality wise, they aren't volatile but can be weak-minded and distract-able. They can be baited into anger after which they are prone to go apeshit for 38-12-11 against just about anyone. They are usually better on defense than offense, because offense requires too much responsibility. They are liable to disappear for 14 minute stretches and author some spectacular lapses on defense. They are also capable of breathtaking athletic feats that get them great contracts (sometimes deservedly so, but often not)

We'll call them "The Our-Family Nighttime Cold Medicine" wings.

They exhibit many of the qualities of the Nyquil Wing, but without the amazing highs and just as many lows. They turn 3/4 of a season of solid defense, making open 19' jumpers and corner 3s, and catching passes after making appropriate cuts to the basket into 3rd-best-player-on-the-team money.

I'm a Wolves fan, they got stuck paying Trenton Hassell for 6 years. Everyone's team has had one or two. Think James Posey, Trevor Ariza, Francisco Garcia, Travis Outlaw. Aaron Afflalo is almost too good. Jason Richardson is probably about the perfect midpoint between the generic medicine and the name brand stuff.

Pat Riley's philosophy was to have 5 players who were interchangeable, and with the Lakers, he got pretty close. I think Bron represents the perfect expression of Riley's philosophy- Magic was the first iteration of it, with Worthy being a close second as a front court player who could play any of the 3 spots. AC Green and Worthy were interchangeable defensively, but Green often drew the tougher assignment because that kept Worthy out of foul trouble. More often than not, that meant Green was under the basket doing the dirty work on the defensive boards...but I think you shouldn't confine that description to wing players because it is an accurate representation of Green's style of play.

And Magic often guarded 4s. Defensive assignments
switched from team to team.

You said current position titles don't have a point, which apparently means your classifications not having a point makes your point.

I asked what it helps predict.
You didn't mention anything. The one time I've seen you use it as a predictor (Kawhi vs. PG), it was wrong.

If you want to say this is just for fun, fine. But don't say that it can used as a predictor of some sort or that you have some greater point.
Also, if this is supposed to be a source of debate, you should embrace debate and not just work from the premise that PG is a Nyquil, refuse to see how it could be wrong, and weaken the overall definition by extending it in order to keep PG in the Nyquil classification.

OE had this NyQuil thing for "years" but brought it out right after the Melo L which caused many eyebrows to rise. But even if you get past that, the types of players he included in the NyQuil thing didn't fit together. He initially stated that they're primarily defensive players that fall asleep offensively but Joe Johnson and Bender were included and they're the opposite. It caused many a heads to be scratched. Timing plus a very loose grouping got people (mostly bags if you look through this thing) mad. The Los Angeles Clippers' season came to an end nearly a week ago, but the fallout continues from their embarrassing collapse in the second round, in which they blew a 3-1 lead to the Denver Nuggets. The latest report gives some insight into the scene in the locker room following their Game 7 loss.

As the team tried to make sense of what happened, Paul George gave a speech in which he implored the group to stay together and come back next season to chase a championship again. It was not well received by teammates, according to a report from Shams Charania of The Athletic:

Multiple teammates had verbal spats with George throughout the postseason, citing in their exchanges a lack of accountability from him.

In the postgame locker room Tuesday night, George was preaching to teammates to remain committed, for all the players to return to the team this offseason and stay ready to make another run. It was met by some eye rolls and bewilderment, sources said, because George did not back up his words with action in the series and the team has multiple free agents with decisions to make. George scored 10 points on 4 of 16 shooting and 2 of 11 from 3-point range in the Game 7 defeat.

"We can only get better the longer we stay together and the more we're around each other," George said after the game. "I think that's really the tale of the tape of this season. We just didn't have enough time together."

As Charania notes, George was a disaster in Game 7, along with Kawhi Leonard. And not only did George have more turnovers (5) than made baskets (4) in the game, he didn't score in the fourth quarter, as the Clippers gave up yet another double-digit lead.

While George was pretty solid for most of the series against the Nuggets, his run-ins with teammates and poor play when it mattered most make it unsurprising that other players weren't interested in hearing a "rah-rah" speech from him at their lowest point. And as a singular event, this really isn't that big of a deal. Co-workers being annoyed with each other in a stressful moment happens all the time, especially in sports.

The problem for the Clippers is that little issues like his were a common occurrence for them, with whispers about their chemistry issues starting just a few months into the season. Initially, it seemed like their talent would win out, and that even if they weren't all best friends, they would be good enough to still win a title. That was obviously not the case, and it appears these issues are serious enough to where the Clippers will have to address them in the offseason.
