Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 07:44 PM
Creighton, Dayton, and St. Louis to join in 2014.

Just reported on ESPN/Twitter.

The new Big East, in 2014:

Butler
Creighton
Dayton
DePaul
Georgetown
Marquette
Providence
Seton Hall
St. John's
St. Louis
Villanova
Xavier

Thoughts, Georgetown and Villanova fans?
2139409, Cool that Duke will have a nice landing spot
Posted by bshelly, Thu Feb-28-13 08:09 PM
2139422, Duke and Carolina ain't splitting up, hoss.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 08:29 PM
As long as Duke goes where Carolina goes, I could care less.
2139437, yeah they will
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Feb-28-13 08:45 PM
the rivalry will go to 1 game a year. but that's basically the endgame.

duke and wake are assed out.
2139538, If they split up, I got news for ya: they won't play anymore.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Mar-01-13 01:21 AM
Because there will be very very very bad blood over it.
2139580, if they split up, you'll bend over and take it
Posted by bshelly, Fri Mar-01-13 08:24 AM
like every basketball school does. sure, it might take ten years or so, but basketball schools can't be spitting on revenue streams.
2139672, Duke's basketball program makes more than most ACC football programs.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Mar-01-13 11:58 AM
Not to sound like the all-too-typical Duke snob, but I'm really not too concerned about money as far as Duke goes.

Though I agree that after a period of time (and once K has retired), a reunion seems plausible. Not with K there though. He holds a grudge and holds the power in his pocket.
2139438, you're adorable
Posted by bshelly, Thu Feb-28-13 08:47 PM
2140109, I thought Kansas and Missouri would never split up either.....

You gon' live forever
Whether you want to or not
Some of us gon' end up holy
Some of us gon' end up hot.....
2139431, wait, arent temple and charlotte also joining in 2013?
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Thu Feb-28-13 08:36 PM
or did i miss some update there?

they have raided the A10 lol.

good move for butler and creighton, i suppose, although they and the zags have earned huge reps without a huge conference.
2139434, Charlotte? If they're taking publics, VCU needs to be on the list
Posted by AnonymousCoward, Thu Feb-28-13 08:41 PM
2139435, Not according to ESPN's report today.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 08:42 PM
2139496, Charlotte's joining C-USA
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Feb-28-13 11:21 PM
With Old Dominion.

I believe Temple's still joining the soon-to-be-former-Big-East. The one with South Florida in it.
2139451, Glad it's happening sooner rather than later
Posted by HowieDooem, Thu Feb-28-13 09:32 PM
The Big East would have been palatable next year with Temple and Memphis joining, but with that would have come Central Florida, Houston, and SMU, so...woof.

Also the TV deal for the Catholic Big East is going to be more lucrative than what the remaining football schools are getting, which is pretty rad.
2139453, That's a nice hoop centric conference.
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Thu Feb-28-13 09:39 PM
2139512, I like it
Posted by absence, Fri Mar-01-13 12:21 AM
Is there any word on what kind of tv deal they'll have?
2139524, I've heard between $3-$5 million yearly per school
Posted by HowieDooem, Fri Mar-01-13 12:52 AM
Fox is switching the Speed Network to an all-sports channel (kind of like what NBC did with Versus) and indications are that they're the lead bidder at this point.
2140081, I would be shocked if NBC's sports network didn't bid
Posted by The Real, Sat Mar-02-13 11:39 AM
It would make more sense for them to do it.

2139529, I REALLY hope Creighton joins.

Because I live here, and my biggest regret is skipping the 62-61 1 point loss at the Devaney Center where Kevin Durant put up 26 and willed his squad to a win over a rugged, then-12 and 6 Nebraska squad.

Since I've been back in Omaha, it's been fun having the opening rounds here although I didn't get to check a lot of the games. I've always wished Creighton would consider stepping it up so I could take a 10 minute walk to some dope games.

Also exciting because Omaha Central recently beat Oak Hill and is getting some national eyes on it...I'm feeling real basketbally right about now.

2139553, Temple can't win for losing, jesus christ
Posted by Bombastic, Fri Mar-01-13 02:53 AM
2139554, Yeah, it sucks
Posted by HowieDooem, Fri Mar-01-13 03:01 AM
I was hoping for this:

Marquette
Georgetown
Villanova
St. John's
Providence
Seton Hall
DePaul
Xavier
Butler
Creighton
Temple
Memphis
UConn
Cincinnati

...but it looks like the Catholic schools have had it with football altogether (even programs that aren't any good). Plus, you know Nova would throw a total bitch fit on Temple being involved.
2139675, This might be the catalyst for SLU becoming a major player
Posted by placee_22, Fri Mar-01-13 12:00 PM
Cats might want to stay home to play in the Big East.
2139708, *sigh* Cincinnati can't catch a break with all of this.
Posted by phenompyrus, Fri Mar-01-13 12:22 PM
2139712, Overall I like it.
Posted by tha_scientist, Fri Mar-01-13 12:26 PM
I was hoping they could get St. Joe's for the Philly market. I am glad they are adding Creighton and SLU to the mix to create more midwest regional rivalries (I'm a DePaul alum).
I also hope they don't add Gonzaga and St.Mary's in the future because it just doesn't make sense to add those 2 west coast schools.
2139720, I don't think they'll be adding St. Mary's now, lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Mar-01-13 12:36 PM
But they absolutely SHOULD try to add Gonzaga, as the one trip a year out west per school would absolutely be worth while for the overall prestige of the league.
2139752, But does Gonzaga want to make 9 trips to the East Coast & Midwest?
Posted by HowieDooem, Fri Mar-01-13 01:10 PM
>But they absolutely SHOULD try to add Gonzaga, as the one
>trip a year out west per school would absolutely be worth
>while for the overall prestige of the league.

Earlier this week, West Virginia was complaining about all of the long trips they have to make in the Big 12, where all of their trips are 840-1200 miles away. The Zags' shortest road trip would be a 2 1/2 hour flight to Omaha, which isn't terrible on its own, but it's about 5 hours from Spokane to the East Coast.

There's also the issue of scheduling. How are the 4 pm Pacific weeknight games at Georgetown, Villanova, et al. going to go over with their fans? Similarly, I don't think the rest of the teams in the league would be thrilled about games starting at 9 or 10 pm on a Wednesday night. Certainly there are ways around this, but why should the other however many teams make a bunch of concessions for one outlier?
2139754, no to zaga. it's an absurd pipe dream
Posted by thejerseytornado, Fri Mar-01-13 01:17 PM
and not necessary for the league.

It's only funny till someone gets mad. Then it's hilarious.
2139757, Easy. Extended home and road stays.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Mar-01-13 01:29 PM
Granted, that's not exactly "easy" in the traditional sense, lol. But it'd be easy to schedule. That way, they only need to make a literal cross country trip a couple of times. Have games on the East Coast at 9, West Coast games at 6.

They don't travel that much right now, but that's because they hold all the power... but their program revenue could increase dramatically with games against big basketball schools.
2139723, Villanova would never allow St. Joe's
Posted by thejerseytornado, Fri Mar-01-13 12:38 PM
never.

It's only funny till someone gets mad. Then it's hilarious.
2139755, I'm not too mad
Posted by spenzalii, Fri Mar-01-13 01:26 PM
Doesn't quite make up for the history of losing UConn and 'Cuse, but since G'Town beat em this year they can GTFO the conference.
2139879, I approve
Posted by THRILLHOUSE, Fri Mar-01-13 04:52 PM
Been a down year for Xavier, but with this news the year hasn't been a total bust. Kind of feel bad for the A10, this has been a great year for it but next year they lose X, Butler and Temple.
2140082, I'm cool with it
Posted by The Real, Sat Mar-02-13 11:42 AM
This has the potential to be a powerhouse conference.

2140083, You forgot UConn and what about about UCF/USF?
Posted by VonClay, Sat Mar-02-13 11:55 AM
I was looking forward to be able to see my Huskies play down here in Florida more often.
2140084, RE: Butler, Xavier to join Big East.
Posted by Castro, Sat Mar-02-13 11:56 AM
They want the name that G'Town, Cuse, and UCONN maintained....besides the Hoyas, the only schools in this new league that gave anything to this are Nova and Seton Hall.

I hope Coach Ollie runs the score up on these schools everytime we play them in the future.
2140105, Big Midwest
