2137751, College Basketball Week
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 01:21 PM
Might as well make a post for the whole week.

If you missed last night, you missed a great KU/ Iowa State game that ended unfortunately with a ref sending it into overtime when Iowa State had the win locked up,

Games to watch:

Tuesday:
#1 Indiana @ Minnesota- 7 PM (ESPN)
#8 Florida @ Tennessee- 9 PM (ESPN)

Wednesday:
#7 G'Town @ UConn- 7 PM (ESPN2)
San Diego State @ #14 New Mexico (CBSS)

Thursday:
UNC @ Clemson- 7 PM (ESPN)
Utah State @ #25 Louisiana Tech- 8 PM (ESPN3)
#3 Duke @ Virginia- 9 PM (ESPN)
#2 Gonzaga @ BYU- 11 PM (ESPN2)

Upset watch:

- Minnesota has been tough at home (beat Sparty, beat Wisconsin), and they stayed close with the Hoosiers on the road... but Crean has had a week to prepare, making an upset bid less probable.

- the Vols have been on a tear since their stomping of UK, putting up their highest three point totals of the year in a row. Can they keep it up against the Gators, who lost their only SEC games on the road against halfway decent teams?

- no matter how bad Clemson is, they show up against tough teams at Littlejohn, taking Miami and State down to the final possession. UNC can't afford to lose games like this down the stretch.

- a dangerous game for Duke here, as they have struggled on the road without Ryan Kelly, and Virginia hasn't lost in the ACC at home. Duke has the big game at home against the U two days later... this is a classic classic trap game that has me nervous.

- the Zags' final challenge of the year (literally, they have only one game left after this), in Salt Lake City, where BYU took St. Mary's down to the wire... but the Zags are on a crazy tear. I don't expect them to lose until *maybe* the conference tournament,

2137769, That call was unfortunate
Posted by Poorspellir, Tue Feb-26-13 02:04 PM
Elijah Johnson went off the second half and overtime though. Everything was falling. Made up for Ben's off night.
2137791, I was less incensed by the no-call...
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 02:30 PM
... than I was calling the baseline scrapping immediately afterward.

You either CALL the contact at the end of the game... or you don't.

You can't refuse to call a shitload of contact on a shooting play with seconds left and then call an incidental loose ball entanglement with seconds left. Officiate with consistency.
2137797, agreed
Posted by Poorspellir, Tue Feb-26-13 02:39 PM
They missed Withey's 5th foul on that reach-in at half court too. I know Young was quick to raise his hand and all, but dude was five feet away from the action.
2137771, Lousiana Tech is ranked?
Posted by Poorspellir, Tue Feb-26-13 02:06 PM
Guess I'll be checking for some of their games down the stretch here.
2137941, Cuonzo leading another late-season surge
Posted by will_5198, Tue Feb-26-13 04:47 PM
the first halves of seasons is another matter. although I believe Tennessee would've been NCAA-bound at this point if Jeronne Maymon hadn't had the knee complications.

Vols are like a lot of teams; live and die by their "point" (scoring) guard's shooting. Trae Golden has been hot in the last month -- when he plays well, Tennessee wins. when he doesn't, they have no chance.

anyway, Martin swept Donovan last season so this is arguably a bigger game for the Gators. Vols also might not have their legs in the second-half after playing four overtimes on Sunday.
2138029, I love Trevor Mbakwe's game.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 07:18 PM
I wonder what his career could have been if the injuries hadn't happened.

He is FEARLESS against Zeller. Zeller has no clue what to do against someone playing so physically against him.

That block he threw on Zeller at about the 14 minute mark of the first half will make Sportscenter. VICIOUS.
2138050, Jordan Hulls is a fucking monster from 3. Good Lord.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 07:51 PM
Haven't seen a whitey who can drop it in from behind the arc like this since Jimmer. Pure, pure stroke, and so, so white.
2138058, Jon Diebler was twice as good as that little punk midget
Posted by guru0509, Tue Feb-26-13 08:18 PM
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/conferences/big-ten/leaders/fg3-player-career.html
2138070, Only half as white though. Hulls is CRAZY white.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 08:41 PM
He'd play in Lacoste if he could.

(Hulls is better percentage-wise too. If he shoots it, which he doesn't do as often as Diebler... it's going in.)

(Though Diebler shot better as a senior than Hulls has so far this year, admittedly.)
2138077, Hopefully that 4th foul doesn't take away Mbakwe's aggressiveness
Posted by Poorspellir, Tue Feb-26-13 08:52 PM
He's been great tonight. They're killing Indiana on the glass.
2138079, They are taking it RIGHT AT Zeller, lol. I love it.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 08:54 PM
I don't know why people assume he's so much stronger than Tyler. Play physical against him, he gets disrupted. It's happened all year.
2138081, Tom Crean's refusal to call time out is beyond comprehension.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 08:57 PM
He let them build scores of momentum... just so he could have FOUR timeouts in his pocket with 90 seconds left? lol
2138085, RE: Tom Crean's refusal to call time out is beyond comprehension.
Posted by Poorspellir, Tue Feb-26-13 09:04 PM
Lol, he's burning through them now, well after the damage was done.
2138150, he does this bc he's not a great coach, he's a mediocre bonehead
Posted by temps2020, Tue Feb-26-13 10:17 PM
a great recruiter but not a great coach.
2138087, I wouldn't want to face the Gophers in the tourney, man.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 09:07 PM
They're going to have a dangerously low seed for how talented they are. This wasn't some fluke game. They can beat teams that struggle against physical interior play-- which nowadays is most teams.
2138091, They play so dumb at times though....
Posted by guru0509, Tue Feb-26-13 09:11 PM
Call me a nonbeliever, because I think Indiana just half assed it tonight

I'll be convinced if they make noise in the B1G tournament

2138097, Zeller has consistently struggled against physical bigs.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 09:16 PM
Nothing phoned in about it. He just got his lunch eaten.
2138095, That block was incredible
Posted by CherNic, Tue Feb-26-13 09:15 PM
2138152, they are so hot and cold. right matchups they could be in the sweet sixteen
Posted by temps2020, Tue Feb-26-13 10:17 PM
2138173, A big win like this is good for a team's momentum.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 10:43 PM
They might still flop, but the talent they have is so terrifying for the low seed they'll have.
2138098, Hulls took that shot from back in Bloomington.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 09:16 PM
Heavens.
2138106, Great win by the Gophers
Posted by Poorspellir, Tue Feb-26-13 09:25 PM
.
2138133, Any chance Gonzaga's the new #1?
Posted by Poorspellir, Tue Feb-26-13 09:54 PM
Or does Duke get it back if they're able to get through this week unscathed? @ UVA, home for Miami, a couple tough tests.
2138140, If (and it's a big if)...
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 10:00 PM
Duke beats Virginia on the road and gets revenge on Miami, they'll be #1.

But that's two tough games in three days, so I don't think it'll happen. Seems unlikely we'd end a season sans the Kraken with only three losses. But Virginia's struggled as of late, and same for Miami, so I hold out hope.

I think the Zags will get more votes but still will come up short regardless of what Duke does. I'm still relatively shocked that they'll get a 1 seed in the tourney as it is.
2138153, Badgers really clicking on all cylindars. hope it continues into the tourney
Posted by temps2020, Tue Feb-26-13 10:19 PM
another 20+ win in the making tonight. Sam Dekker is a beast in the making.
2138171, They're looking like a good Elite Eight pick right now.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 10:42 PM
Such a tough out. Obviously depends on matchups, but Bo is generally a reliable coach. I hate him and his hateable face, but he merits more respect than most of the "name" coaches.
2138271, his facial expressions during games really don't help
Posted by temps2020, Wed Feb-27-13 10:10 AM
but he's really a good guy. sometimes Bo does look like the devil tho when he gets mad.

2138193, He's really got us going right now
Posted by BennyTenStack, Tue Feb-26-13 11:26 PM
I was probably his harshest critic early in the season because of his stubbornness, and refusal to play up-tempo ball, but his decision to finally set us loose and push the ball has opened up our offense ten fold. We looked like the worst team we've had in 8 years earlier in the season, and now we are one of the hottest teams in the country.

Unbelievable turn-around.
2138184, Should've committed harder to the upset predictions, lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-26-13 11:03 PM
But Minnesota's unevenness and Tennessee's 4 OT game scared me.

This doesn't comfort my thoughts about Thursday's Duke game... :-/
2138188, no matter what, Tennessee owns Billy Donovan
Posted by will_5198, Tue Feb-26-13 11:12 PM

2138662, RE: Up for the JTIII/Ollie Showdown.
Posted by Poorspellir, Wed Feb-27-13 06:25 PM
Napier's play last year was maddeningly inconsistent, been really impressed by his growth this season. How much of it is a credit to Ollie, and how much is just the kid growing up and maturing, idk. But he Boat have been handed the keys this year, and they're balling out. Probably my favorite tandem to watch in the country.

Not sure they can pull this off tonight, but I'll be rooting for them.
2138673, Gotta pull for UConn tonight
Posted by HowieDooem, Wed Feb-27-13 06:50 PM
Marquette's a game behind G'Town in the loss column...and if the Hoyas have to lose a game to appease me, better that it's this one instead of Cuse next weekend.
2138684, slow the damn game down
Posted by thejerseytornado, Wed Feb-27-13 07:23 PM
stop playing at their pace.

also, stop overhelping on defense. at least three wide open shots from overcommitting defenders to the guy with the ball.

2138687, Not getting Porter nearly enough touches either.

The selfishness of Napier and Boatwright, which helped when they were making the shots, bit em in the ass at the end.

Porter is an absurd talent.
2138772, RE: Georgetown had zero business winning that game.
Posted by Poorspellir, Wed Feb-27-13 09:38 PM
Georgetown stole it at the end, but you could argue that UConn pulled off a mini miracle getting it to ot in the first place.

Agree completely on Boatright and Shabazz, their shot selection down the stretch was questionable at best.

don't want to make excuses but his inability to turn the corner after the ankle injury really fucked up his game, he was either trying to raise up or make a play with a defender right into him. this loss was worse than the Marquette, two games blown that would have them in 1st place right now.

I personally think they've been far too lenient with Rick Barnes. He should have been fired two years ago.

Virginia's biggest game of the season is tonight at home.

Duke's biggest game of the season is Saturday at home.

They're unquestionably looking forward to two days from now to "the big game."

They're also on the high of the report that we may get Ryan Kelly back as soon as senior night.

But looking forward against a team like Virginia on the road where they haven't lost in ACC play is... unwise.

We'll really see how mentally strong Duke is tonight.
2139227, nope...NU is completed depleted. it will be close for 5 mins then
Posted by temps2020, Thu Feb-28-13 02:37 PM
get broken open and you'll win by at least 15.
2139144, i'm still on a high from these past two wins
Posted by thejerseytornado, Thu Feb-28-13 12:25 PM
crazy week. watch us lose to rutgers on saturday.

It's only funny till someone gets mad. Then it's hilarious.
2139314, Insane stat about Virginia's defense:
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 05:26 PM
Their defensive efficiency at home?

Second.

Better than Florida. Or Louisville. Or Georgetown.

Best among all major conferences.

Their offense is pretty meager, but Duke's defensive efficiency has taken a turn south since losing Ryan Kelly.

God, I hope we're not looking ahead to Saturday.

I'm also watching the game with a bunch of Virginia fans.

Please save me.
2139373, their defense blows. they just play shitball.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Feb-28-13 07:19 PM
2139397, They haven't let an ACC team score over 55 at home.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 07:53 PM
They held you to 52, NC State to 55, Clemson to 41, FSU to THIRTY SIX. Held Miami to 54 in Miami.

Just cuz UNC went buckwild on em in the Dome doesn't mean they aren't legit on D.
2139410, yeah that's what happens when shitball fails.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Feb-28-13 08:09 PM
you see just how truly shitty they are as players and as a team. fuck virginia.
2139423, lol, since it happened literally ONCE this entire season, I guess you're right!
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 08:30 PM
>you see just how truly shitty they are as players and as a
>team. fuck virginia.

Clearly the TREND is the anomaly, and the anomaly is the trend! Weird how I missed that!

I'm not saying dudes are stars. But their D is disruptive as fuck, and anyone denying that that takes skill is foolish.
2139371, Off to a decent start on the road
Posted by Poorspellir, Thu Feb-28-13 07:13 PM
Can't afford a letdown coming off that win over State.
2139392, Up 14 at the half
Posted by Poorspellir, Thu Feb-28-13 07:46 PM
Despite Hairston and McAdoo being a combined 3-12 from the floor.
2139436, solid road W. game never in doubt.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Feb-28-13 08:43 PM
2139442, It's a W
Posted by Poorspellir, Thu Feb-28-13 08:52 PM
Don't think they played particularly well, but I'm not gonna complain too much about a road win.

Moving on.
2139444, They piping in crowd noise?
Posted by Poorspellir, Thu Feb-28-13 09:08 PM
That building is LOUD as fuck.
2139445, Rough start for Duke
Posted by Poorspellir, Thu Feb-28-13 09:11 PM
.
2139449, smh slow start on the road. thy better not be looking ahead
Posted by CherNic, Thu Feb-28-13 09:21 PM
2139452, Nice job by Duke working their way back in it
Posted by Poorspellir, Thu Feb-28-13 09:38 PM
.
2139464, Yeah, this is some real shitball defense, BrooklynWHAT, lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 10:24 PM
Virginia just refuses to let us in the paint. At all.
2139465, im not impressed.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Feb-28-13 10:26 PM
2139467, Our season low is 62.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 10:38 PM
Lets see if the final score impresses you.
2139468, this isnt even enjoyable.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Feb-28-13 10:41 PM
i hate both of these teams.
2139470, Joe Harris is the truth
Posted by Servo, Thu Feb-28-13 10:46 PM
2139471, It helps that we match up terribly against him.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 10:50 PM
With Ryan Kelly, this would be a different game (obviously). But Sulaimon is too small and Murphy is too slow to guard him. His ball fake combined with the extension of his release... we have no one for it.
2139472, He is just a very efficient player
Posted by Servo, Thu Feb-28-13 10:53 PM
What's killing you guys is what you said, Virginia's defense.
2139474, Yeah, holding a team around 70 should be a win.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 10:55 PM
Just couldn't put the ball in the hoop. Wrecked us in the paint, and Sulaimon down the stretch destroyed us with frustrated decisions on offense and defense.
2139475, Conversely, Curry kept you in the game
Posted by Servo, Thu Feb-28-13 10:57 PM
That other white guy on Virginia literally can't guard him. Sulaimon playing like a freshman, but it happens.

Not over yet.
2139477, Nah, on the road it's over, lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 10:59 PM
Wish it wasn't.
2139473, So....Zags #1 next week, huh?
Posted by HowieDooem, Thu Feb-28-13 10:55 PM
Provided they don't choke tonight.
2139476, RE: So....Zags #1 next week, huh?
Posted by Poorspellir, Thu Feb-28-13 10:58 PM
Pretty much.
2139482, Unless they lose tonight.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 11:07 PM
Which I don't think is likely. But all the same.
2139481, If this helps us beat the U, I'm okay with it.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-28-13 11:06 PM
Probably cost us the East unless we win out and win the ACC Tourney.
2139487, Duke is going to win the national championship
Posted by Basaglia, Thu Feb-28-13 11:11 PM
2139522, If the Kraken is remotely full strength, I'm right there with you.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Mar-01-13 12:50 AM
It's just tough knowing we would lose this game in advance and then watching it happen.
2139484, Plumlee going 1 on 1 = burning eyeballs
Posted by absence, Thu Feb-28-13 11:08 PM
worst good player in the country. A senior should know his limitations.. can't believe I got to watch another of these goofball brothers for three more years.
2139485, College bball..it's fantastic
Posted by Beezo, Thu Feb-28-13 11:10 PM
.
2139486, Props to UVA on a well played game
Posted by Poorspellir, Thu Feb-28-13 11:11 PM
Did a ridiculously good job keeping Duke off the glass, two offensive rebounds all night, and both were by point guards.

Plumlee never really adjusted to those double teams they were throwing at him either.

2139573, got dammit smh
Posted by CherNic, Fri Mar-01-13 07:02 AM
2139597, dang, we REALLY miss Kelly.
Posted by 85SOUTH, Fri Mar-01-13 09:23 AM
Hoping we can have a great ACC tourney showing.
2139958, This Harvard Princeton joint on the U is pretty good
Posted by calminvasion, Fri Mar-01-13 08:49 PM
Tommy's boys jus came back from 10 down o tie it up with 3 left. I always think of Princeton as the spot for black Ivy League ballers, but this squad is ALL white. John Rogers needs to step in and do something.
2140094, Shaka vs Brad Stevens
Posted by Poorspellir, Sat Mar-02-13 12:35 PM
VCU's running away with this thing early.
