2136718, can we talk about this NASCAR accident aka the Daytona 500 post Posted by bentagain, Sun Feb-24-13 12:59 PM
this shit is just getting under my skin
media outlets have been running with the Danica angle all week
and I would expect the ratings to see a bump
but let's be real people
these crashes are the reason people watch
what's bothering me
is every interview, narrative, commentary, etc...
these dudes are almost congratulatory that nobody died
well congratufuckinglations dipshits
you still sent 30 something people to the hospital
I mean, who are these people that go to these races knowing their health is at risk in doing so
if catching a baseball at a game meant I could die, I don't think I would go
watch NASCAR get the highest ratings ever after all of this BS
|

2136721, Im not watching (never have) Posted by CherNic, Sun Feb-24-13 01:14 PM
But the GALL of them to not even consider calling the race...and admitting it well before the two most seriously injured people were upgraded...poor taste
|
2136722, i saw some of the pictures and i was like "why did they take dude's shirt off" Posted by rob, Sun Feb-24-13 01:14 PM
he had leg injuries...no medical reason to do it....either endangering him or ruining a shirt
then i realized no body in the crowd was wearing a shirt.
i can not understand that shit at all. being in the crowd in the summer must be unbearable.

and wrecking all those parts all the time. even not in crashes, things just constantly wearing out and getting junked.
it's no fun at all to watch, the culture surrounding it isn't all that enticing and even if they're using a lot of proprietary parts and energy that aren't on regular markets it still seems wasteful to me.

2136759, I've got it on now. NASCAR is desperate for a boost. Posted by Virgenes Corazon, Sun Feb-24-13 03:25 PM
Attendance and ratings were down in 2012. http://aol.sportingnews.com/nascar/story/2012-11-21/nascar-tv-ratings-decline-fox-espn-tnt-daytona-500-olympics
You would think that if attendance was down that ratings would go up a bit but that hasn't happened. NASCAR's attempted innovations, like the "Car of Tomorrow" (a boxier car meant for safer, closer competition used from 2007-12) and the Chase for the Cup (making a points system that only allowed the top 12 in the standings to win the championship even though races still feature 43 cars) have pushed away a chunk of the hardcore crowd.
Hell, some people probably miss when they called it the Winston Cup. Certainly they don't like this little no-winning hussy Patrick being shoved down their throats as a new star. Especially when they've got two developmental leagues full of drivers trying to push into the big time.

2137004, the player safety agenda has been grabbing headlines for the past Posted by bentagain, Mon Feb-25-13 10:21 AM
couple of seasons in the NFL
concussions and early onset of dementia
really don't compare to death
I feel like stories of drivers and even fans being killed appear every year
yet...
and as a boxing fan
there was even some talk about banning the sport because it was too violent
yet...
feel free to elaborate on the racism issue improving
are you talking about fans or drivers?
|
2137009, There hasn't been a death in NASCAR since 2001. Posted by Buck, Mon Feb-25-13 10:26 AM
As a direct result of improved safety regulations instituted after that year.
>I feel like stories of drivers and even fans being killed >appear every year
They don't. You're imagining this.
As a result of Saturday's crash, NASCAR will examine what happened to the catch fence and find ways to make improvements. Something went wrong with the tire tether (which is supposed to keep tires from leaving the vehicle) and the catch fence failed. NASCAR will make improvements, guaranteed.
>feel free to elaborate on the racism issue improving > >are you talking about fans or drivers?
Well, which are you talking about?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NASCAR_fatal_accidents
Eight drivers died in the 1950s and 1960s; five in the 1970s; thirteen in the 1980s; ten in the 1990s, eight in the 2000s
no deaths this decade...yet
the 70s is interesting though
only 5
?

2137014, Those are regional feeder series. They are not NASCAR. Posted by Buck, Mon Feb-25-13 10:37 AM
You need to understand what you're talking about. Basically you've just said, "there was a death in AAU. Why doesn't the NBA do something about it?"

You saw that car that got cut in half Saturday. That guy casually got out of the car and walked away without a scratch. I'd say NASCAR is doing pretty well on the safety front.

the little exposure I do have is from the media coverage, hype, etc...
thus the reason for the post
but as 50 stated in a post above
I don't see any black people
I guess that's Okay for NASCAR, just not the other major sports
and like I said
what other sport are spectators in danger by attending?
I guess that's Okay for NASCAR, as long as nobody is dying...
anymore

2140072, nah, just some observations Posted by bentagain, Sat Mar-02-13 10:06 AM
I find it strange that this was just brushed aside
no big deal
nothing to see here
BECAUSE it's NASCAR
is there another sport where this wouldn't be a bigger story?
|
2140077, Well, I'm not sure what you want to happen to him. Posted by Buck, Sat Mar-02-13 11:14 AM
>I find it strange that this was just brushed aside
It was covered by all the major sports news outlets, and NASCAR has suspended him indefinitely. What more do you want to happen?
>no big deal > >nothing to see here > >BECAUSE it's NASCAR
Again, they suspended him indefinitely. What do you want? Shoudl he be shot dead by firing squad? Hanged in the town square?
>is there another sport where this wouldn't be a bigger story?
It's probably not a bigger story because nobody knows who he is. I mean, I follow NASCAR, but I don't even know who he is. Some back-of-the-pack nobody in the Nationwide Series.
What you're doing right now is equivalent to complaining about a racist remark made by somebody in the Arena Football League. Yes, it's bad, but it's the fucking Arena League.
|

not to mention differing point totals she's still dead last in the points rankings but she got more ESPN interview time than Jimmie Johnson (San Diego kid by the way)
i had a post up a while ago asking how/why is she even still relevant given that she's never won shit (after all these years)

i really wonder how all their checks shake out tho: jackman tire man windshield wiper guy fuel cannister guy sheetmetal guy all the mechanics machine shop guys
i'm sure a #1 (or even a pole position) in nascar is like a playoff win in NFL/NBA whereby you get team bonus checks

or if Rick Hendrick's grandson wants to be a jackman for a summer so Hendrick puts him on the NASCAR truck series crew?
