2123990, who?

2123997, Work ethic.

JJ Reddick worked himself into his current NBA status. He was labeled a bust not only after his first year, but probably his second as well... It wasn't until his third or fourth season that he started to really blossom as an NBA-level player.

He's a good prototype for why the NBA's rookie contract system has worked. A guy is under contract for a decent period, and it gives him a chance to develop as opposed to overpaying for potential right out the gate.
2124001, yep. jacobsen was partying allllllll the time nm
Posted by vik, Fri Feb-01-13 08:20 PM
2124137, That's exactly right.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Feb-02-13 12:56 AM
I could tell stories about everyone partying during my time at Duke... But never JJ. He was in the gym every night shooting.

2124042, Because Reddick has a better overall skillset
Posted by LA2Philly, Fri Feb-01-13 09:10 PM
There have been a lot of great shooters...the question is do you have the complementary skills to counter when the opposition takes away your strength. Reddick does, Jacobsen doesn't. JJ is far more fluid off the dribble, better first step, anticipates much better (ie better vision - both off the dribble and on the catch), can shoot off the dribble, can shoot without his shoulder being square, has added a very serviceable finishing ability in the paint, has stamina for days, above average team defender and moves his feet well laterally on the defensive end. To sum, he has a more overall skillset that allows him to be more than simply a niche player and combined with his level of effort and hard work, has continued to add to his game.

I wish I had the posts to prove it but I remember distinctly that Longo and I were the only ones cysin dude way back when SVG had him buried on the bench without even giving him any kind of consistent minutes. You see it somewhat regularly that a player gets put on the bench for whatever reason, labeled a 'bust', and then when dude finally gets a consistent look (ie not being pulled after the first mistake), they turn into contributors. Reddick, E Clark, and Lance Stephenson come to mind.
2124140, Not necessarily
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sat Feb-02-13 01:12 AM
At age 18, you could argue Casey had a better skill set.

J.J. though has worked his ass off to acquire the skills that has made him effective in the pros.

The ball handling, defense, playmaking, that's all stuff he's worked on.
2124067, A lot of times success in the NBA comes down to getting the right...
Posted by ThaTruth, Fri Feb-01-13 09:41 PM
opportunity and the right situation and having an organization that believes in you. There are guys playing overseas that are better than than some that are in the NBA but they never really got a chance to shine.
2124193, well, that's BS because redick had a horrible situation was SVG
Posted by Basaglia, Sat Feb-02-13 10:13 AM
SVG barely played him even AFTER he showed tremendous improvement.
2124475, It's pretty obvious the DeVos is pretty high on dude, even though SVG...
Posted by ThaTruth, Sat Feb-02-13 10:33 PM
seem to not give a fuck about him and didn't want to play him the Magic went hard to extend and retain him, because he brings as much value to the team off the court as he does on it
2124210, yup best thing that ever happen to redick was orlando extending him
Posted by southphillyman, Sat Feb-02-13 11:36 AM
after them bust yrs during that rookie contract
a lot of organizations might have been drafting other quality players during those yrs and just moved on from dude and he very well could be in europe now
orlando being a shitty organization was a blessing and a curse to dude because it brought em more time to get his shit together
2124211, ????? orlando was in title contention his first few years...
Posted by Basaglia, Sat Feb-02-13 11:40 AM
he was playing good minutes and averaging about 6 points during those years...

them harrison barnes numbers...is he a bust?
2124214, fuck that gotta do with shitty personnel moves
Posted by southphillyman, Sat Feb-02-13 11:50 AM
cmon bringing up title contention lol
like that shit wasn't 80% dwight 10% SVG 10% shitty roster
actually hedo and lewis balled a game or two in that finals
redick not so much
iono why u even mad refreshing this thread and shit. be happy the org wanted to keep working with him
2124218, i'm saying they ain't do him no favor by keepin him...that's all
Posted by Basaglia, Sat Feb-02-13 12:05 PM
wasn't no "working with him"...nigga, he EARNED every minute he got.

you said "bust" years, when, in fact, it was a typical learning curve for a young player on a GOOD team.
2124192, redick was pressed not to be sorry, which gives me hope for austin rivers...
Posted by Basaglia, Sat Feb-02-13 10:11 AM

redick is 29, dogg. works like a demon every offseason tryna figure new ways to not be sorry and stay on the court. do you know how many "sorry" players STOP TRYING to get better by, oh, say, 25 years-old and just try to collect checks? take chris brewhon...duhon had all the necessary talent to be AT LEAST as good as a mike conley jr...he don't wanna try. duhon ain't improved ANYTHING since he was a sophomore...literally NOTHING. he's just gotten stronger and gained more experience. TAKE CHRIS WILCOX!!! that bamma should been an all-star. he don't care. he want checks!

since 2006, redick added: a left hand...lost 20 pounds...gained 10 in muscle...improved his handle...improved pick and roll skills...improved ability to draw fouls with pumpfakes...quickened his release...vastly improved cardio/endurance...become one of the best passers at the 2.

casey DECIDED to be sorry. this ain't a mystery.

and casey and dunleavy was the comparison. he was rated higher than dunny in 99.

the better question is why is JJ better than mccants and bracey wright. actually, i think bracey got hurt somewhere along the way.
2124200, And wasn't Casey butt hurt when Duke chose Dunleavy over him?
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sat Feb-02-13 10:51 AM
2124201, yes
Posted by Basaglia, Sat Feb-02-13 10:56 AM
2124408, we all know it was mccants' attitude/personality
Posted by noseitall, Sat Feb-02-13 08:20 PM
and not his talent level that has kept him from getting back in the league

peace.

It was always Casey and Dunleavy and Duke chose right by going with Jr.
2124227, lmao some of yall clearly don't know shit about hoopin.
Posted by Radio Rahim, Sat Feb-02-13 12:24 PM
JJ worked his ass off. Casey was content doing what he was good at.

Didn't improve from college at all and really was a liability defensively. His J was aight but he couldn't create his own shot in the league so he was pretty much a catch and shoot guy. And if you stay just that you're liable to be in and out of the league if you're a 2 guard that:

1. Don't do what you're supposed to do. Catch & shoot well. He shot around 40% for his career.

2. doesn't have that one coach to keep you on the roster out of blind loyalty

3. Isn't on a succcessful/winning team (playoffs every year.)
2124604, Do u understand that you answered the OPs question??
Posted by Ceej, Sun Feb-03-13 10:59 AM
Shit.

He was askin and you had the answer. I dont think he was tryin to say Casey should have made it, he's askin why he didn't.
2124684, nah that was to some of the answers in here. Not the op.
Posted by Radio Rahim, Sun Feb-03-13 01:57 PM
like niggas bringin in reasons/opinions, but its clear as day.

he said asked so i answered. But the other cats in here giving wrong explanations and shit.
2124562, Monta and Jennings ate Redick's food tonight
Posted by ThaTruth, Sun Feb-03-13 02:07 AM
2124566, Two faster younger more skilled players bested him on a given night?
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Feb-03-13 02:22 AM
That is simply shocking! Next you'll tell me Dwyane Wade put up double digit points on him!

2124670, Should I track down games in which he outplays superior SGs?
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Feb-03-13 01:35 PM
I could do that this morning.

But first I'd like to know what I said that was wrong.

Are they better scorers than JJ? Check.
Are they faster? Check.
Are they generally more skilled? Sure, I'd say check.

2124787, RE: Should I track down games in which he outplays superior SGs?
Posted by FILF, Sun Feb-03-13 04:21 PM
>Are they better scorers than JJ? Check.
Maybe if JJ worked on his post-up game he could have easily taken advantage of Ellis.

>Are they faster? Check.
But JJ is taller

>Are they generally more skilled? Sure, I'd say check.
He's a pro, so there is no excuse for the lack of skills. Besides, folks aren't born with skills, they could be naturally faster, stronger, ....TALLER etc. but cats ain't born with predetermined free throw shooting percentages. Excuse, excuse, excuses
2124806, So JJ went from "bust" to "should've beaten Monta/Jennings." Noted.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Feb-03-13 04:57 PM
2124829, He is what he is, a mediocre guy putting up decent numbers as a 6th...

2124822, jacobsen was a decent athlete by college standards, below avg
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Sun Feb-03-13 05:46 PM
as a pro.

reddick's game is not really about athleticism at all, he has taken the steve kerr route of being a shooter that doesn't burn you in other areas of the game.

krapono was the guy who was totally one dimensional, yuck, hated watching that guy play.
