2122130, world soccer is only a mirror of the world at large....... Posted by Ink_Spot, Wed Jan-30-13 12:36 AM
there is racism all over the world. You hear and read a lot more about it in soccer because it is a worldwide sport, where fans are rowdy and chant and voice their opinions during games. You will always get those racist elements. It is not everyone in the world who are, or every fan, but in a global sport like that, you will always get elements of racism in areas that have always been racist. There are a ton of countries when you talk of world soccer, only very few of those countries are notorious for fan racism.
There is also racism in American sports. In the reactions, posting, and online interaction about players. it is just not as prevalent as you get in some areas in soccer.

2122145, Feel like Europeans are more out front with their racism too Posted by Kungset, Wed Jan-30-13 12:59 AM
Like there are literal fascist parties that are out in the open and get significant chunks of the vote. US racism is more coded and more hidden but you know there's probably the same amt of people here who wish they could do the crazy racist shit they do at soccer games

2122157, To add on, Europe never had a civil rights era. Posted by Buck, Wed Jan-30-13 01:43 AM
What the US went through in the '50s and '60s didn't happen in European countries, at least partially because there were so few minorities there. Black people are only 3.5% of the population in England right now, for example, and 50 years ago that percentage was even tinier.
It might be useful to understand, say, Italian soccer fans as roughly equivalent to American sports fans circa 1930. It isn't clear that they even understand why their attitudes and behavior could be considered wrong.

2122183, Jealousy. Posted by Binlahab, Wed Jan-30-13 09:04 AM
Black people are the best athletes on the planet. In aggregate, we are faster, stronger & normally play much hungrier and angrier and other ethnic groups really have cognitive dissonance when confronted with black superiority in any field.

2122188, it has very little to do with soccer Posted by jrocc, Wed Jan-30-13 09:19 AM
soccer is just the biggest sport in Europe so it's where the attention is at the moment. there was apparently some racist incidents reported during the Olympic games in London. racism in Europe seems to be growing if you ask me. some basketball players who went over to Europe during the lockout and other times have mentioned racist incidents as well.
J.R. Smith's sister was over in China fighting with fans in the stands allegedly over some racist comments. not Europe i know, but still it's an issue at sporting events overseas.
