2116392, absolutely not yet... it's possible that he gets there, starting with a W

in the SB

I don't want to sound like a hater, he's been fantastic in this playoff run, but how deep is the elite pool going to get? It is fair to rank Brady/Peyton/Brees/Rodgers over him...

So for him to even crack the top 5 he has to be ahead of Eli, Ben, Matt Ryan (those 2 are close), Romo, Cam, Luck, RGIII, etc... Right now if I was starting a team I'd take Kaep or RW over him too...

I watched a lot of the Ravens this year and their offense looks downright awful at times, maybe it was just the playcalling but he misses a lot of throws... The Ravens have no choice but to give him a massive contract now and I don't see him living up to it, but time will tell... he's young enough to keep improving

2116397, Well considering he just beat the 2 QB gods head to head
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-21-13 11:14 AM
2116400, u know who else did that recently, right?
Posted by rjc27, Mon Jan-21-13 11:16 AM
and the person I'm talking about went into Pitt and played almost as well in the afc title game as flacco played yesterday, but his d did not hold the opponent to 13 points

(that afc title game after he beat manning/brady back to back)
M. Sanchez 20/33 233 2/0 102.2
2116407, How do Sanchise's numbers compare to Flacco's? And the Ravens D...
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-21-13 11:22 AM
didn't really do shit in Denver
2116409, you used the fact he beat "2 Gods in playoffs" as reason he's elite
Posted by rjc27, Mon Jan-21-13 11:23 AM
I'm just letting you know someone who is considered the worst qb in league history on these boards did that 2 seasons ago
2116422, But difference Flacco wasn't just there, he played well and made...
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-21-13 11:36 AM
Some great throws in both games, he actually OUTPLAYED those guys
2116428, umm, so did Sanchez, you must have not watched the games
Posted by rjc27, Mon Jan-21-13 11:41 AM
he lit the patriots defense up the same way Flacco did yesterday
2116472, Flacco lights them up routinely...
Posted by Creole, Mon Jan-21-13 12:33 PM
Sanchez is nowhere near the caliber of Flacco. C'mon man!
2116485, I never said that
Posted by rjc27, Mon Jan-21-13 01:00 PM
>Sanchez is nowhere near the caliber of Flacco. C'mon man!

My point is TheTruth is using that as his nail in the coffin to his flacco elite argument...

Also, lighting up the Patriots routinely is what all qb's do
2116404, no but he is on the doorstep...
Posted by tomjohn29, Mon Jan-21-13 11:18 AM
he misses alot of open receivers on intermediate routes
one of the best in the league throws out routes
reading coverage is still a work in progress but when you have Ray Rice alot of that gets washed
he has the talent, size and arm strength
even if they lose and he shows out against the 9ers D im still willing to give him elite status
2116416, most road playoff wins .. ever
Posted by cereffusion, Mon Jan-21-13 11:29 AM
2116469, Played in 3 AFC Championship games in 5 seasons...
Posted by Creole, Mon Jan-21-13 12:31 PM
RE: most road playoff wins .. ever

Outplayed the opposing qb in all three of them. Not his fault Houshmanzadeh ('09) and Evans ('12) drops those passes in the end zone. This year alone, he has outplayed Luck (the young prodigy), Manning, and Brady.

The most victories of any qb in his first 5 seasons. Matt Ryan is up there but he ain't no damned Joe Flacco. Give Flacco Julio Jones and Roddy White and watch Joe act a damned fool. Ravens entire WR corps < Julio & Roddy...

Had to endure Cam Cameron's playcalling until Harbaugh fired Cam. Looks even more elite now since Caldwell has been calling plays.

Had to endure his best LT being benched practically all season due to being in Harbaugh's doghouse. With McKinnie back starting at LT, the O-line is BEASTING and is giving my man Joe the time he needs to flash that arm and his skill.
2116434, I think he is now, but the SB has to set it in stone.

Win a ring, get MVP, automatically join the club imo.
2116436, No, we need to stop grading on the Eli Curve

2116489, in a league with 32 starting qb's, what level should elite cut off be?
Posted by rjc27, Mon Jan-21-13 01:11 PM
elite is defined as: A group of people considered to be the best in a particular society or category, esp. because of their power, talent, or wealth

top 6 would be 20% basically... if Flacco is a top 6 qb to anyone here, fine... noted
2116513, Here's the thing for me
Posted by cereffusion, Mon Jan-21-13 02:06 PM
I don't think he's elite skill-wise but I think he is the rare QB that was never afraid of the big moment. He's been winning playoff games since his rookie season. He was STELLAR in the second half last night, though.

And he's done by being more than a 'game manager' but less than the 'focal point' of the offense.
2116723, That about sums it up for me
Posted by MothershipConnection, Mon Jan-21-13 07:02 PM
He's not consistent enough to be considered elite but if it's a pressure situation or the Ravens are down, I have no doubt that Flacco ain't scared of the pressure and can come through. Sort of like an anti-Matt Ryan. Doesn't mean he always does come through, but he's done it often enough.
2116516, That's a decent test. 'Is he in the top x%'
Posted by RaFromQueens, Mon Jan-21-13 02:17 PM
I think more direct questions like:

1. can he be counted on against any defense?
2. can he cover big deficits?
3. 2 mins 1 timeout on your own 20 down 4 can he do it?

are better though.
2116530, Do you think he's not top 6, and if so, who's in your top 6?
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-21-13 02:34 PM
2116535, I think the 6 u mentioned below all go ahead of him
Posted by rjc27, Mon Jan-21-13 02:42 PM
Peyton & Brady, A-Rodg & Brees, and Eli & Big Ben...

Matt Ryan and him I'll give a toss up too... so that's 7 at best for me... I could certainly make the argument for Romo and even Cutler being at least as good as Flacco

then you take the young crop of Cam, Luck, RGIII (if healthy), Russell Wilson, Kaepernick, etc there is no way I can definitively put Flacco in my top 6
2116544, What if Flacco wins SB MVP?
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-21-13 02:46 PM
2116546, I guess I'd have to put him at 7
Posted by rjc27, Mon Jan-21-13 02:49 PM
because I'm not gonna come on here and argue against everything

but eye wise, if I'm starting a team today I easily take the 6 ahead of him plus Luck, possibly Kaep if he also balls in the SB, RW3 and RGIII but if he gets that SBMVP it'd be hard to argue...

I will say this, when your favorite team plays the Ravens you ain't afraid of Joe Flacco beating u, my mind still has not changed on that... then Talib was covering Boldin Flacco was doing NADA... if the Ravens wanna give this guy 100 mil GOOD

the chargers had flacco beat this year if Ray Rice did not bail him, the defense bailed him when he shouldve lost vs kc, he's a pretty good qb, he's not elite
2116590, C'mon...
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-21-13 03:39 PM

Ain't none of them dudes won shit, you can't put people like Eli on a pedestal because he won then elevate a bunch of of people who haven't won shit over Flacco. It's not who has the best potential or who you would start a team with, but who's the better qb RIGHT TODAY.
2116562, Lets take a statistics approach, how many ARENT elite?
Posted by select_from_where, Mon Jan-21-13 03:00 PM
GIve a high number and we can work from there
2116675, top 8.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Jan-21-13 05:19 PM
2116514, The problem with this elite talk is ya'll expect elite QB's to make it
Posted by Starks dunked on Bulls, Mon Jan-21-13 02:14 PM
to the Superbowl every year

and if they dont 1 year you start to doubt them

ya'll overreact regarding top QB's way too much

2116532, Payton and Brady have been considered that for a while, Rodgers and...
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-21-13 02:38 PM
Brees have kinda joined them. Then you have Eli and Ben's hardware that's tough to ignore even though statistically they may not measure up to those other guys.
2116553, I hate the Ravens, but if he wins the SB, yea, he'll be in the mix.
Posted by phenompyrus, Mon Jan-21-13 02:54 PM
Both Mannings, Brady, Rodgers, Brees are there now, Roethlisberger knocking at the door. Flacco joins if he wins the SB, and Ryan would have been added if the Falcons won.
2116621, yes, no, whatever
Posted by FILF, Mon Jan-21-13 04:16 PM
2116671, Kinda, in an Eli Manning-y way...
Posted by Ausar72, Mon Jan-21-13 05:17 PM
Plays on a solid team for a good organization and by default that gets a lot of wins under his belt, and playoff experience.

But...

Something about him just screams, "not elite".

I give him props for making it to the Super Bowl though.

<<<---"That's my quarterback!" (c) T.O.

my thoughts,

peace.
2116684, not at all
Posted by will_5198, Mon Jan-21-13 05:45 PM
2116688, Flacco would be the most mediocre "elite" QB yet
Posted by jorge123, Mon Jan-21-13 05:47 PM
And we've had quite a few, recently - Manning and Big Ben immediately come to mind. But, hey, at least they've been to the Pro Bowl.

Shit, at least Matt Schaub at least led the league in yardage one year!

What the hell has Flacco done besides being a solid QB on a stacked Ravens team? Nothing against Flacco - he's clearly good enough to take the right team as far as they want to go. But "elite" means you're pretty much good enough to make any team a contender just by your mere presence. That aint Flacco.

Ravens were 43-37 in the 5 years before Flacco. This included 4 seasons with Kyle fucking Boller as their starting QB. When they got Steve McNair (read: a guy on his deathbed but who could actually complete more than 60% of his passes) they went 13-3. This is the most QB-friendly organization in the league - if you are merely mediocre, you are a superbowl contender (see Dilfer, McNair, and now Flacco).
2116696, Nah, but I only consider 3 qbs currently as 'elite'
Posted by LA2Philly, Mon Jan-21-13 05:53 PM
Peyton, Brady, and AR.
2116715, No Breezy?
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-21-13 06:55 PM

2116746, Post 38 nm
Posted by LA2Philly, Mon Jan-21-13 07:36 PM
2116719, not Brees? he hasn't been elite for a long enough period of time yet?
Posted by forgivenphoenix, Mon Jan-21-13 06:59 PM
2116745, My mistake, I knew I was forgetting someone obvious.
Posted by LA2Philly, Mon Jan-21-13 07:36 PM
2117015, he is in that 9-12 club, but don't play him like he is trent Dilfer
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Jan-22-13 04:01 AM
Joe Flacks got a lil sumthin, Sumthin.

unlike dilfer who was told not to lose, joet flacks got something to work with there, he just ain't in that big club.
