2112074, Better Player: Pippen or Ewing?
Posted by melmag, Wed Dec-31-69 07:00 PM
EDIT: Ok, we mostly agree Pippen had the better career, so who was the better player?

I say Pippen, even without the rings argument. The knock on him was that he was merely Robin to MJ for a good part of his career. But honestly, I'll take Pippen's Robin to Ewing's underwhelming Batman any day.

Ewing cracked first team All NBA just once in a 15 yr career, and was routinely bested by other great centers (Shaq, Admiral, Dream, etc.)

Pippen, on the other hand, was the best perimter defender and best all around player for a good part of his career.

me and subjectmattr been arguing about this, what says you?

Scottie Pippen:
6× NBA champion (1991–1993, 1996–1998)
7× NBA All-Star (1990, 1992–1997)
NBA All-Star Game MVP (1994)
3× All-NBA First Team (1994–1996)
2× All-NBA Second Team (1992, 1997)
2× All-NBA Third Team (1993, 1998)
8× NBA All-Defensive First Team (1992–1999)
2× NBA All-Defensive Second Team (1991, 2000)
#33 Retired by the Chicago Bulls
NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team

Patrick Ewing:
11× NBA All-Star (1986, 1988–1997)
All-NBA First Team (1990)
6× All-NBA Second Team (1988–1989, 1991–1993, 1997)
3× NBA All-Defensive Second Team (1988–1989, 1992)
NBA Rookie of the Year (1986)
NBA All-Rookie First Team (1986)
NCAA champion (1984)
NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player (1984)
Naismith College Player of the Year (1985)
Adolph Rupp Trophy (1985) NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team
#33 Retired by New York Knicks

2112091, Who was Ewing's best teammate?
Posted by AnonymousCoward, Tue Jan-15-13 12:05 PM
Mark Jackson? He would be Pip's 6th best teammate after Cheese Eyes, Rodman, Barkley and Olajuwon.
2112095, pip obviously had the better career cuz of the chips
Posted by Cenario, Tue Jan-15-13 12:07 PM
better player i'd prolly say Ewing
2112098, Funny, When Pippen Didn't Have Jordan Ewing Beat Him
Posted by RexLongfellow, Tue Jan-15-13 12:08 PM
There's no way in hell you can tell me that Pippen would've done what Ewing did by himself.

Ewing you build the franchise around
Pippen is a complimentary piece you add to an already great player
2112106, The revisionist history w/ Knick fans boggles me.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Tue Jan-15-13 12:10 PM
Pippen was an MVP candidate that year after Jordan left.
2112110, Crunchtime shots going to Kukoc, lol

a last second shot was called for Toni Kukoc? Ewing never did any sucker shit like that.

2112136, He noted Pippen's MVP candidacy. That one moment rendered his

candidacy largely irrelevant. Essentially he's implying that Pippen had a leg up on Ewing because he was in the running for MVP for a time during that season. I'm saying that idea is foolish because that very same season Pippen showed the world that he wasn't built to be a leader on a championship team.

B.J. Armstrong
Pete Meyers
Toni Kukoc
Bill Cartwright
Horace Grant
Steve Kerr
Scott Williams
Bill Wennington

...took them all to 55 wins (more than last year)
3rd seed in the EAST
1 game from the NBA Finals

All that ^^^ > Kukoc hitting that 1 shot.

Sorry.
2112172, "1 game from the NBA Finals" lulz. I think we can stop there.

Was the Knick team that kept them from getting to the NBA Finals (lol again) significantly better? Both teams had 3 All-Stars voted in that year, but only one true star.

player of that whole era. The nigga is basically a punchline, now when he routinely lead a bunch of rag-tag niggas to 50-win seasons and deep into the playoffs.

2112118, : Pippen two situations work against Pippen
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Jan-15-13 12:18 PM
first when jordan retired and pip sulked and toni kukoc hit that game winning shot against the knicks 1)

and of course the western conference finals blazers versus the lakers.

had pippen help finish off the lakers they no dynasty for Shaq, and the lakers and he steps on kobe and he also would have beaten phil jackson. 2)

that blazers and lakers western conference finals to me is what keeps pippen from being in the argument of the top 20 greatest players ever in the 12-20 range. had the blazers won that series history looks at pippen differently.

as for Ewing great stats, however he was never all that in the nba imo. he was behind Shaq, dream and the admiral imo.

but out of these two go with patrick ewing by a box fade tip
2112123, Titles later in their careers elevated Dream and D-Rob over Ewing...
Posted by ThaTruth, Tue Jan-15-13 12:25 PM
and Ewing gets labeled as a choker but the funny thing is earlier in their careers Ewing's teams had more success and those guys were considered to be chokers. In their primes Ewing was right with those guys, his knees started to give out early so his decline was quicker but its crazy how today people try to write that dude off like he wasn't shit.
2112128, This is where I stand
Posted by AnonymousCoward, Tue Jan-15-13 12:27 PM
look at this roster:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/NYK/1994.html

This shit sandwich won 57 games, and was one win away from tittle.
2112131, dream was in the finals in 86
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Jan-15-13 12:32 PM
even though the rockets lost, dream took his team deeper than ewing had. and ralph sampson hit a lucky shot but he was never dream's equal.

david robinson was just consistant and held his own period.
2112141, Then what did he do in the playoffs the next 8 years without Sampson?
Posted by ThaTruth, Tue Jan-15-13 12:37 PM
2112509, dream won Jewlery in 94, 8 years after losing to the celtics
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Jan-15-13 11:23 PM
meanwhile Ralph Sampson's NBA Careeer wasn't half as memorable as Billy Pultz's was.
2112119, I voted Ewing better career, Pippen better player
Posted by bentagain, Tue Jan-15-13 12:20 PM
Careers include entire bodies of work

and Ewing had one of the greatest NCAA careers at G'Town

and he's been coaching since retiring from playing

but Pippen in the NBA could do it all
2112162, disregarding college and coaching
Posted by Cenario, Tue Jan-15-13 12:55 PM
ewing would take pip's career in a second.

would pip take ewings?

lol, no.
2112122, the Pippen Dunk/Push/Walkover of Ewing is my fav NBA highlight
Posted by Selah, Tue Jan-15-13 12:24 PM
i can NEVER not laugh, shake my head, and do the screwface at that

i have nothing else to add here
2112127, That WAS pretty gangster

2112142, Definitely. There's no way a hardcore Knicks fan can watch that replay

The best Robin of all time cannot fairly be judged against any Batman, because he's not asked to do Batman shit.
That's a big deal, when he was supposed to be asked to do Batman shit he sat out.

And by the way, now that D-wade is Robin, I'm not even sure if Pippen is the best Robin of all time.
2112163, please, pip is a better robin than wade
Posted by Cenario, Tue Jan-15-13 12:56 PM
bosh might be a better robin than wade.
2112170, Wade had a chip as Batman before Bron got there...lets not forget
Posted by subjctmattr, Tue Jan-15-13 01:04 PM
2112174, For some reason people are quick to try to dismiss that
Posted by ThaTruth, Tue Jan-15-13 01:08 PM
2112178, but we are talking about him as robin no?
Posted by Cenario, Tue Jan-15-13 01:15 PM
so yeah he was a better batman, but at this point he's not looking that great as a robin right today. He was hurt last year through the playoffs and bron pretty much carried them, lets see what happens this year and years to come.

Wade is breaking down, when its all said and done, Pip might be the better one overall.
2112198, FOH, they don't get past Indiana without Wade, plus Pippen was...
Posted by ThaTruth, Tue Jan-15-13 01:31 PM
basically a shell of himself after he left the Bulls
2112212, how does that dispute anything i said?
Posted by Cenario, Tue Jan-15-13 01:39 PM
pip was around 32, 33 years old when he left chicago and still had 3 or for more good seasons.

2112208, Wade tried his best to lose to Indiana w/his last 3 games of the series

Luckily KANG would not let it happen.
2112277, RE: but we are talking about him as robin no?
Posted by Numba_33, Tue Jan-15-13 02:40 PM
>Pip might
>be the better one overall.

Pippen's defense should vault him over Wade in terms who is the better 2nd option IMO.
2112360, yup that too.
Posted by Cenario, Tue Jan-15-13 04:51 PM
2112201, The offensive focus shifted to Young Wade but Shaq was still Batman
Posted by Bombastic, Tue Jan-15-13 01:32 PM
as soon as Shaq got that last ring & became fully fat, old & satisfied Flash was barely a .500 first-round exit Batman.

From here on out that dude is a liability & they need to trade his ass before he becomes fully untradeable or Bron leaves because he gets tired of carrying him.
2112257, I disagree, but even if you're right Wade is STILL the better Robin
Posted by subjctmattr, Tue Jan-15-13 02:18 PM
He would have then took two different Batmen to a title in the role of Robin.

That's more than I can say for Pippen.
2112164, its already been said, cant compare #1s to #2s.. Ewing better

FOH with Scottie Pippen's broke sidekick ass.

Put him on the Knicks & ask him to lead that team for a decade under those hot New York City lights & he'd wilt (no dipper-o) like he did as the 'leader' of any team he was ever on without Mike.
2112202, as far as the subject line is concerned, i don't think that's
Posted by Cenario, Tue Jan-15-13 01:32 PM

It would basically mean that we can't compare wessy to most other top pgs for example.

Pippen KILLED the Knicks
Kukoc Embarassed Ewing

Pippen 36 and 16 with 5 steals

The Knicks bitched up and started fouling as they normally did.

2112435, didn't Ewing in his prime only have two fellow all-stars?
Posted by Organ, Tue Jan-15-13 08:08 PM
I ain't checking now, but I think he only had two
Not two consistent all stars, but as in, people that he played with in a season and they made the all-star game that season

Oak made in once in the 80s and Starks made one
That was it......

Houston may have made one with EWing on the team but he was well past his prime by then
