2108356, Most successful underachievers Posted by AnonymousCoward, Thu Jan-10-13 03:56 PM
There is sure to be some overlap with the "fucks given" post, but this does not exclude people who cared.
For example, David Robinson worked his ass off, is one of the best players of his generation and a champion, and he STILL didn't reach his full potential as a player. He was more more gifted than Olajuwan, yet we don't hold the two in the same regard because The Admiral didn't maximize his potential.

2108357, and the answer is Shaq Posted by AnonymousCoward, Thu Jan-10-13 03:57 PM

2108359, How does someone underachieve if they cared? Posted by Orbit_Established, Thu Jan-10-13 03:58 PM

2108360, unable to channel killer instinct or MAINTAIN motivation Posted by AnonymousCoward, Thu Jan-10-13 04:00 PM
The latter was Shaq's problem
|
2108362, That's called "caring" Posted by Orbit_Established, Thu Jan-10-13 04:04 PM
>The latter was Shaq's problem
Guys who don't "maintain killer instinct" aren't able to do so because of distractions and/or because they don't care about being great more than they do X or Y
Guys who can't maintain motivation can't do so because they don't care

2108364, I think Shaq "cared" but the game wasn't always a priority Posted by AnonymousCoward, Thu Jan-10-13 04:08 PM
actually, now that I think about it, he cared more about the way he was perceived than the actual game. He wanted to win because it reflected well on him, not because he NEEDED to win.

2108371, this killer instinct shit is just dumb Posted by veritas, Thu Jan-10-13 04:13 PM
David Robinson was a great player who didn't win a title at his physical peak because he played in a stacked NBA full of phenomenal centers.
Including some, like Hakeem, who at their respective bests, he wasn't as good as.
If David Robinson's an underachiever there aren't too many people in this life who aren't underachievers.

2108389, on paper he was as good or better than Hakeem Posted by AnonymousCoward, Thu Jan-10-13 04:26 PM
http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=1&p1=olajuha01&y1=1998&p2=robinda01&y2=2003
but he couldn't turn it on in the playoffs like Hakeem could = lack of killer instinct
|
2108393, So he wasn't better than Hakeem. Posted by Orbit_Established, Thu Jan-10-13 04:29 PM
I'm confused

2108399, because he underacheived Posted by AnonymousCoward, Thu Jan-10-13 04:33 PM
Should have been better. All the tools to be better, and was as good if not better in the regular season.

2108400, OR Hakeem had better teammates that could hit clutch shots that... Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Jan-10-13 04:33 PM
D-Rob didn't have most of his prime.
Funny how Hakeem only "turned it own" for two seasons in his 30's
|
2108402, pretty much. Spurs figured it out, added shooting Posted by veritas, Thu Jan-10-13 04:35 PM
and won some titles.
hell in the case of Mario Elie they added a guy who hit big shots FROM the championship Rockets.

2108405, click that link an look at the playoff numbers Posted by AnonymousCoward, Thu Jan-10-13 04:36 PM
Robinson's stats declined in the'offs. Olajuan's improved...significantly.
|
2108365, how do you work your ass off but not reach your potential? Posted by thejerseytornado, Thu Jan-10-13 04:09 PM
isn't potential defined by the combination of working really hard + your natural gifts?
unless you're arguing Robinson worked his ass off at the wrong things, like trying to add a 3 point shot or something?
----------- It's only funny till someone gets mad. Then it's hilarious.

2108381, do you think Shaq reached his full potential? Posted by AnonymousCoward, Thu Jan-10-13 04:20 PM
If not, do you think he cared about winning/his legacy/the game?

2108395, As I've said before, contrary to OKS lore, the gap between Robinson... Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Jan-10-13 04:30 PM
and Olajuwon is not as huge as a lot of people like to make out to be
|
2108410, its not a huge gap but its a gap Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Thu Jan-10-13 04:40 PM
nobody ever says Robinson was a bum. We all acknowledge Robinson is a hall of famer. Hakeem is/was just better.
|
2108415, i tend to think Robinson was better for more of their careers Posted by veritas, Thu Jan-10-13 04:43 PM
but I was young and biased so who knows.
My version of history is that Dream peaked higher, but not for as long.
|
2108426, Hakeem's career gets romanticized based on 2 seasons, really 1.5 Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Jan-10-13 04:50 PM
|
2108413, Dream is, arguably, a top 10 player all time... Posted by melmag, Thu Jan-10-13 04:42 PM
Admiral prolly top 25-30 all time.
thats a wide gap, fam.
Unless your measuring them on the GOAT Center ladder, then they might be closer
