No link but dude is getting raked over the coals & rightfully so

It's bad enough they even had a camera on old gal that didn't have shit to do with the game but when Musberger busted a chewy in his shorts over her even I had to say "whoa!"

Listen I'm all for shots of chicks in the stands. This is America. But there's got to be a limit to the shit.

this is related to sports because it happened during a sports game on a sports channel.

YES THEY HAVE! Normally they do it later in games when they are trying to get to the end without having dead air on live TV. This however was in the 1st quarter. I laughed, wondered if it was just me who thought they went all in on it a little too early in the game, then moved on. Of course folks are dying to make it a big deal. Fuck it..she was pretty much bangin. And it ain't like she doesn't know it. And she might get cheese offa this. She wins. Agenda folks win. We win for getting to randomly check her out.

Apparently it is now 'creeping' to be attracted to women in the way that most dudes are attracted to even the most random women. If so, I'm screwed. To share, I say 'wow' to myself at least 3 times every time I'm in the grocery store during peak hours. Hell, just last night I saw a white chick in tights and boots who had hella thighs and cakes..it caught me off guard and left me visually blessed. It took me at least 3 minutes to get over that chick. Who am I kidding? I want to see her again right now. She was sneaky-style stacked and I love that. And guilty pleasures. Clearly I couldn't be an announcer.

sports announcers onscreen talk about babes all the time. I remember when the titty lady used to run across the baseball field, and announcers would go berserk over her.

It's called freedom of speech and press, and there wasn't anything obscene about the attention that they gave her.

so you do wear panties and go to pta meetings?..punk

2107183, RE: yet another person who doesn't understand what free speech is
Posted by all stah, Wed Jan-09-13 01:06 PM
You are a toe the line type of person that needs others and legislation to tell you how to exist and how to communicate as a free entity.

By existence of being a free organism and a free human entity you have the right to FREE WILL. However, I'm not sure you are competent enough to understand what that means.

Musberger broke no law in expressing his appreciation for the beauty of a woman onscreen. He broke no law in his contract, and he broke no law in regards to the constitution, and he broke no law as a human entity( because there is no law in the realm of nature).

your move..but, regardless, you're still going to get mated.

no legislation( of men or man) inhibits the ultimate liberation of free choice.

sorry your're not a free thinker, and you're simply a drone.

have a nice day.

oh by the way chief:

Freedom of speech is the political right to communicate one's opinions and ideas. The term freedom of expression is sometimes used synonymously, but includes any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, as with libel, slander, obscenity, sedition (including, for example inciting ethnic hatred), copyright violation, revelation of information that is classified or otherwise.

musberger violated none of those elements.

just take the L and go practice your mod drills.

This has nothing to do with free speech or the first amendment.

I have absolutely no idea what happened.

If she was completely oblivious to the deliberate plans of getting any screen time whatsoever then that would be wrong on the behalf of ESPN.

If I had to guess I'd say that wasn't the case, though.

2107153, 1968..Musburger on J. Carlos and T. Johns ......
Posted by Selah, Wed Jan-09-13 12:49 PM
quote:

Bizarre Protest by Smith, Carlos Tarnishes Medals
by Brent Musburger

MEXICO CITY-Tommie Smith and John Carlos must be labeled unimaginative blokes if they can't come up with a stronger and more effective protest than the one they staged her last night during the Olympic medal ceremony honoring their accomplishments in the 200-meter run.

Smith and Carlos looked like a couple of black-skinned storm troopers, holding aloft their black-gloved hands during the playing of the National Anthem. They sprinkled their symbolism with black track shoes and black scarfs and black power medals. It's destined to go down as the most unsubtle demonstration in the history of protest.

But you've got to give Smith and Carlos credit for one thing. They knew how to deliver whatever it was they were trying to deliver on international television, thus insuring maximum embarrassment for the country that is picking up the tab for their room and board here in Mexico City. One gets a little tired of having the United States run down by athletes who are enjoying themselves at the expense of their country.

Protesting and working constructively against racism in the United States is one thing, but airing one's dirty clothing before the entire world during a fun and games tournament was no more than a juvenile gesture by a couple of athletes who should have known better.

If Smith and Carlos were convinced that the ends justified their black power demonstration during the National Anthem, they should have avoided the award ceremony altogether. If it's true, as Hayes Jones says, that an athlete competes for himself but walks to the stand for his country, then a more courageous protest would have been for Smith and Carlos simply to stay away and not pick up their medals.

Their ignoble performance on the victory stand completely overshadowed a magnificent performance by two black athletes. It's a shame. Smith will not now be remembered as that splendid runner who so thoroughly demolished the world's record that he ran the last 10 yards with both arms held high in triumph over his head as he crashed through the finish line in the fantastic time of 19.8.

He will instead be remembered as the militant black who shook a black glove and black track shoe during the playing of the National Anthem. It hardly seems on the level with his first accomplishment, and it did absolutely nothing to relax racial tensions any place.

<end of swipe>

then in 1999 he followed up it like this:

Musburger, now with ABC Sports, said yesterday that his words were ''a bit harsh,'' yet questioned the value of the gloved-fist salute. ''Did it improve anything?'' he asked, then added, ''Smith and Carlos aside, I object to using the Olympic awards stand to make a political statement.''

summation:

eff a Brent Musburger then, now, and forever

not on baseless data.

i'm leery when anyone - Black or not - starts pontificating anecdotally on what "most of us" do or did with zero to support it as fact...especially to justify something white folks do/did

whomever those Black folks were.....eff them too. additionally, even if it were true, it still provides no justification for musburger on some a-does-not-lead-to-b-being-ok

and no, i'm not "mad" at your response...i just don't think it's relevant at best and question its truth at worst

Bringing up what Musberger said about John Carlos
and Tommie Smith in a post about his comments on a
girl's beauty is super irrelevant

I know nor give a fuck about Musberger. He prolly is
racist and conservative...I don't care to defend him

My point is that a lot of progressive black people said
that Tommy Smith and John Carlos were whiny attention
whores who put their feelings ahead of the spirit of
the olympic games and whose actions didn't really do
anything to help anyone

That was a common view at the time, even from black people
who loved black people

So I can't really chide a white MALE for authoring much

>Bringing up what Musberger said about John Carlos

not really. It is relevant because Musburger been saying dumb stuff for decades so why trip now? why feign surprise when a duck quacks, or when a tainted well poisons someone?

>My point is that a lot of progressive black people said
>that Tommy Smith and John Carlos were whiny attention
>whores who put their feelings ahead of the spirit of
>the olympic games and whose actions didn't really do
>anything to help anyone

WHO though? "a lot"? of course now you'll probably say "go find them yourself" but the burden of proof is usually on the one making the assertion. I'm not saying they DIDN'T exist, but "a lot" is pretty vague and throws up flags when talking about an entire race of people

or are we talking about YOU (in which case I guess your comments might make more sense...or at least some kinda basis)

>That was a common view at the time, even from black people
>who loved black people

again: WHO though? And as far as "Black people who loved Black people" how are those folks you reference not showing more love for "the spirit of the olympics" (a nebulous concept) over the concerns of a couple of the very people they supposedly love (something tangible)? calling them whiny and attention whores is a heck of a way to express the love you are attributing to "them".

>So I can't really chide a white MALE for authoring much
>of the same over 40 years ago

right, but then there is the 1999-line-toeing part so the 40-years-ago part which kinda eliminates the 40-years ago and therefore it doesn't matter implication (another fact: last June Carlos said that whenever he and Musburger are in the same location he can't say anything to him because musburger takes off the other direction. said in here: http://www.thenation.com/blog/168209/after-forty-four-years-its-time-brent-musburger-apologized-john-carlos-and-tommie-smith#)

Upon returning home, there was support for Smith and Carlos in the Black community, but not the entire Black community. Carlos explains: “There was pride but only from the less fortunate. What could they do but show their pride? But we had Black businessmen, we had Black political caucuses, and they never embraced Tommie Smith or John Carlos. When my wife took her life in 1977 they never said, let me help.”

she wasn't the only harmed person is my argument. Brent Musberger just normalized cat-calling pretty women on cable tv. now, it's pretty damn normal (see the responses all over this post), but that doesn't make it ok.

The point is that those details are the reason she got
called out. He didn't randomly surf the audience, pick
a pretty girl, and talk about her.

He was talking about an educated, highly accomplished
young woman. And beauty is a part of what she does, being
that she partakes in beauty pageants and models.

But apparently its offensive to talk about how pretty
professional models are

and that's not relevant. call her beautiful, reference the auburn/alabama thing and be done. I wouldn't blink an eye. but that's not what he did. he gushed. he kept going.

this was in the 1st quarter too, so the game wasn't over yet, so that's not a justification either.

>He was talking about an educated, highly accomplished

yeah. that's how he treated her. like an educated, highly accomplished young woman. LMAO. in fact, he got her bio wrong--he said she goes to auburn. she graduated in 2011.

Perhaps you can show it to me?

Unrelatedly (or, rather, at least as related to the present conversation as your non sequitur attempt to discredit Rome) I'm confident that the church's opinions on the vast and weird topic of gender aren't something that you understand as well as you think you do.
2108016, it was a missed joke
Posted by thejerseytornado, Thu Jan-10-13 08:50 AM
that you took seriously (similarly, people caught feelings over my first post?). sorry.

similarly, i'm sorry if my posting style came across as condescending. I'm willing to blame it on a religio-cultural difference in linguistic norms (my fiancee always blames that for why she gets annoyed at how I argue as a NE jew) on how to make points. i apologize if i came off condescendingly, as that was not the intent. Nor, when you post, do I presume you are condescending to me, though, quite frequently, my first reaction (before remembering it's you posting) is that it was condescending. I post that not to call you condescending sounding, but because it's interesting to me how posting styles can lead to those presumptions and why and what might be behind that.

however, the posts all above mine, other than smuts, were pretty unanimously about how musburger is just a creepy old guy (thus, no big deal) or its overblown. I'm pretty confident in arguing that were we to storify this whole post, other than the occasionally smuts (bizarre name for this post) or me or bin, it's pretty much a board-wide agreement that this was overblown and not an issue and we should stare at pretty women during sports events as per usual.

i don't see a problem with showing a player's wife and complimenting her and moving on. I do think musburger drove well past that line. i might have done a poor job articulating why that is, but it's certainly my opinion, and i've learned to never believe i'll change a mind on okaysports. But I do think this is another space where the boy's club has met and decided that what boys do with regard to women is ok. Then, the woman who was the target of that action said it was ok, and she trumps the other women who were talking about broader issues than her feelings on the subject, but we don't want to hear that in our boys club.

so i did a poor job of explaining my views on this one. next time i'll try better or not bother. not sure which.

You've almost played a nice slight of hand here, but it doesn't quite work. Her willingness to forgive isn't trumping other women, it's trumping a conversation that focuses on her. Nobody's stopped from talking about a broader issue here. Just stopped from making her a tentpole in that discussion.

Here's another pithy moment in catechism: sin is treating objects like people and people like objects. Whether she's text or t&a seems like six of one and half dozen of the other to me since neither one gets to be a person. So even if it plays better in an undergraduate WGS class, I don't think turning her into a stick with which to whap people we don't like is substantively better than turning her into a particularly pleasant arrangement of flesh.

Civilization will, at some point, have to continue and that works most smoothly when we permit the aggrieved party power down the outrage machine themselves.

so brent musburger doesn't need to apologize to her. cool. espn didn't apologize to her either. because that was one of two conjoined issues.

>Here's another pithy moment in catechism: sin is treating
>objects like people and people like objects. Whether she's

>turning her into a stick with which to whap people we don't

that's a particular reading of the issue. And it's too individualized, imo, for it to resolve these issues. There were two aggrieved parties, disrespected through the same act. The particular woman and her family, who opted out of being aggrieved, and the entire audience, of which many were aggrieved. You believe we can't separate the two, I believe we have to.

Or, that is, we have to wait until the woman oggled on national broadcast is offended to decide that I can be offended by what I view as well? That's where you seem to be heading, and that's not accurate. As a viewer who wanted to watch a game, I shouldn't be subjected to a view of women I found degrading and demeaning to her, to women, and to me. That isn't negated by the fact that the woman involved is ok with it, because she is just one of of three groups involved. The speaker, the target, and the audience. As the target, her views need to be respected, and so I'm not trying to teach her to view the world differently or feel threatened by Musburger. I do, however, think the audience has a right to have an opinion and feel offended or hurt by having to view that action passively. Had Brent been walking with me in a park and Katherine Webb and McCarron were sitting on a bench and Musburger started talking about her like that, I'd have a right to tell him to STFU, right? Even if Webb said afterwards that she didn't mind once she heard it later?

>Civilization will, at some point, have to continue and that
>works most smoothly when we permit the aggrieved party power
>down the outrage machine themselves.

fanon comes to mind here, but i'm really just kinda done with this post, tbh.

anyway, it's still amusing to me how enraged and defensive the interwebs of men got over an issue that two professors gave quick quotes about in the nytimes. talk about an aggrieved party needing to power down an outrage machine...espn apologized and it could have been a non-starter. men got mad defending musburger's principle (of drunkenness? of talking about women at football games?) more so than feminists got upset. The internet went fox news.

2108181, the second part is where she was objectified IMO, no one focuses on
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Thu Jan-10-13 01:02 PM
that part though. they are like ewwwwww, gross old man called that beautiful young girl a beautiful young girl, nasty, creepy, bah!

the second part where he basically says "throw a football good and get a hot bitch" in so many words is the only thing i find objectifying. like saying if you make a lot of money, you can buy a fast car.

but again, i seriously doubt that was his intended message or that he even put that much thought into it.

this kind of sterile, touchy approach toward gender doesn't work. it's the opposite of difference without deference. it's more like a rejection of difference with loads of deference.
2108186, i know he didn't put much thought into it
Posted by thejerseytornado, Thu Jan-10-13 01:09 PM
and you're dead on--that's where it got weird for me, and what I was trying to get at. you did better than I did in expressing that.

That was, for me, the moment where I saw how these cut-aways and what gets talked about during them helps "do gender" in front of millions of people primed for traditional masculinity/gender concepts. This one wasn't subtle where others are. And it happening right after the Jemele Hill bruhaha on his board helped me realize that, i think.

It wasn't a huge deal, insofar as there are more pressing things than old-ass Musburger saying some dated shit on TV, but it was not cool of him and it opened my eyes even further when the majority of the posts in here didn't see it the same way I did and didn't notice the overwhelming maleness of the place where they talked about how they saw and interpreted that moment.

I hate to make the race/gender comparison because they're very different aspects of our society and how we divide each other, but it was so reminiscent of how the conversation goes when I'm in a room of white people talking about race, it was illuminating to me.

She's trying to chill in public & watch the fucking game.

She didn't ask for the camera at that time. She isn't cheerleading.

She has a right to her privacy. She was chilling in the stands. The fact that the whole nation of men is like "oh! Pretty! Me likes!"

Is hella creepy! Who the fuck gave Musberger, you, your drunk ass uncle or anyone else the go ahead to pass judgement (in public!) about a gatdamn thing!

Like...who the fuck do y'all think you are?

If I was that woman's father or brother I would be livid...& afraid for her safety.

It's not right & I'm honestly kinda shocked at the laissez faire outlook I'm reading here. Respect the woman's right to her privacy. Leave her alone.

Whole shit is gross & lame. As a father of a daughter I'm appalled honestly.

Do better, "men"

Actually, Ms. Alabama who goes to Auburn and is dating
the star QB of rival Alabama is a highly relevant
detail

>Doesn't matter that she welcomes the twitter followers.

Translation: you don't care about what her opinion is
on the matter. Ironic.

>She's trying to chill in public & watch the fucking game.

We already asked her, and she didn't mind.

>She didn't ask for the camera at that time. She isn't
>cheerleading.

If the issue is whether or not she asked for the
camera time, simply ask her if she thought it was
appropriate or not.

She already told us.

realistically, if you're a public figure you can't go to a public, televised game and not expect to be on TV. i disagree with anyone saying "she's looking for the attention" but the idea of putting someone's gf or wife on camera isn't new, and is usually television's way of saying "look how pretty this QB's gf is" without actually saying it. so for espn to apologize on his behalf is a bit hypocritical to me.

people are acting like they only focused on her because she's pretty, etc, have it all wrong. part of the production, the entertainment, of these big games is to have storylines that go beyond what's happening on the field, especially during a big fucking one-sided rout and folks are about to change channels.

whether it's a cancer-surviving wife, a beauty pageant girlfriend who went to a rival school, a single parent who struggled to get their kid into school, etc.

musberger went a little creepy with it, yeah, but this reaction is overblown. this is a far cry from something like namath/kolber.

"You see that lovely lady there? She does go to Auburn, I'll admit that, but she's also Miss Alabama, and that's A.J. McCarron's girlfriend. Wow, I'm telling ya, you quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women. What a beautiful woman! Whoa! So if you're a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with pops."

First of all, describing that as a "slew" of comments, as I've commonly seen, is a misnomer. It's really one comment, I guess you could say starting at "so," it is a separate, more general comment.

Is that all? WTF? Some of you are offended by this? First of all, there is nothing wrong with calling someone beautiful, no matter what the ages or appearances of the people in question are. Secondly, what he said about quarterbacks was kind of dumb but it's not untrue and it's just the kind of thing you'd expect a hokey old fart like Musberger to say.

This is also not a woman wearing a burka or working on vaccines in a lab, she is a beauty queen! I am pretty sure she is comfortable receiving adulation for her appearance and she even said as much.

So, did I miss something here? Did he say something else?
2108196, it is.
Posted by thejerseytornado, Thu Jan-10-13 01:14 PM
but look at the "controversy." There wasn't anything beyond tweets. espn apologized for Musburger going too far, a couple academics got quoted, and then the internet worked its wonder and people flipped out because there was an apology (note: it wasn't ever an apology to Webb. (“We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test,” ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys tweeted. “However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.”)

this was some fox news war on christmas style backlash against an apology that was pretty damn appropriate.

This boring story has a point. Musberger is just an old dude. What makes him so creepy? His boozey smile and bad dentures? The fact that he is substantially older than this woman? He is just a dude paying someone a compliment. If it came off awkward, big deal, it's live television.
