2104055, The Greatest Recruiting Class Ever? Dakari Johnson, #1 Center in 2013...
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sun Jan-06-13 12:27 PM
commits to the University of Kentucky.

IMO it was a great choice.

He doesn't have the ESPN highlight bounce, but has great hands, nice jumper, good feet.

Dakari doesn't care if he comes off the bench.

Kentucky has now landed the TOP PG in the class. the TOP SG in the class, the 2nd ranked SG in the class, the TOP Center in the Class. And we also got another PF who's looking like a low budget Anthony Davis clone.

Still some more big fish out there we're looking at.

Andrew Wiggins of course.

Julius Randle and Aaron Gordon.

We get one more and this shit is a great achievement. Then we can rock out to 2014 which will be equally promising.

2104069, obvious this was the end result

I'll take the Josh Smith consolation prize. If Smith gets into better shape, he's the better player next season. that's a BIG if, obviously.

anyway, the timing is the one thing that disappoints. He was going to be a spring signing and then announced for UK right after Smith committed to the hoyas. Bird in the hand means there's no way the hoyas could have not taken Smith but it makes you think the hoyas actually had a (small?) chance to steal Dakari from UK*.

*also, not sure he's ok with coming off the bench--that was his main concern re: Cuse when he had his top three. and the timing makes it pretty clear Josh Smith's signing was the last straw re: g'town's chances. there definitely was time in georgetown's front court for Dakari even with Smith, so not sure about that claim re: coming off the bench.

2104072, like my boy KB says, when WWW always at your games, you're UK-bound

2104087, yeah, when i heard that, i knew it was done
Posted by thejerseytornado, Sun Jan-06-13 01:11 PM
didn't know he was at all of them, just heard it was at one a couple weeks ago.

man, i can't wait till the IAC is built. and the catholic seven expect a near doubling of their TV money? g'town might finally be more than these guys' token good-academics program on their top 3 or 5 list.

2104078, I just read him talking about being a reserve in a few places

If WCS comes back, he's coming off the bench.

If we get Randle, he's coming off the bench.

He'll get minutes, but shit James Young might be coming off the bench too.
2104088, well, he declared, so it is what it is.
Posted by thejerseytornado, Sun Jan-06-13 01:13 PM
but his dad basically shat on 'cuse (on their top 3) for already having a bunch of bigs and the scuttlebutt was that he had planned to wait till spring because of wanting to see if there's a starting spot next season at UK. and he declares right after the hoyas picked up a 15-20 minute guy at C.

*shrug*

2104108, This might come off assholey...but....
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sun Jan-06-13 02:02 PM
coming off the bench at Syracuse is diff than coming off the bench at UK.

Dakari is already starting with a limited amount of touches on the offensive end. I think he's a 2 year player especially if WCS stays.
2104112, It's not assholey. Bench players from UK still make the jump.

And successfully.

Who's the second best Cuse pro after Melo from the last decade or so? ... Hakim Warrick? Etan Thomas?
2104178, Dion Waiters came off the bench at Cuse and went #4
Posted by DJR, Sun Jan-06-13 04:14 PM
He's at least starting most of the time, where's Daniel Orton at?
2104297, 2 things:
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sun Jan-06-13 06:06 PM
1.) Daniel shouldn't have went into the draft that year. He didn't listen.

2.) Dion came off the bench because it was best for your team, not because there was more talent ahead of him.
2104311, Nice 2 for 1 copping of pleas there

2104328, Shits true though.
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sun Jan-06-13 06:47 PM
Daniel comes back, gets to work on his game and gets play all he wants. Goes higher in the draft and is more prepared to play in the NBA.

Waiters wasn't the 6th man because there were stars in front of him, it was because Jimmy B thought he helped more scoring off the bench.

If Dakari comes off the bench, it'll be because we have players who are actually better than him.

Cal doesn't care if your a Freshman or not. WCS right now comes off the bench for most of the year, and started last game, because he's playing well.

WCS could go 1st round this year, but is coming off the bench for pretty much the whole year except for the last game.

Maybe not "stars" in front of him, but there were returning starters who were/are good college players in front of him.

Just like there would be in front of Johnson at Cuse. I don't know, maybe in his mind it's ok to back up a one and done kid who will be a high pick, but it's not ok to back up returning starters who aren't surefire high NBA picks.
2104399, That's pretty much what I'm saying. Boeheim is probably...
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sun Jan-06-13 07:11 PM
gonna value experience.

Cal is gonna with the hot hand and to the talent.

2104440, to a point, maybe
Posted by DJR, Sun Jan-06-13 07:22 PM
Boeheim will go with a freshman if he's his best option. Johnson might be very good, but I doubt he'll be better next year as a freshman than Coleman will be as a sophomore or Christmas as a Junior....those 2 weren't ranked much different than Johnson, coming out of high school. Not to mention Keita is a solid role player who will be a senior.
2104483, Yep, Coleman and Johnson are pretty much the same thing.

Plus Dakarie reclassified, so I don't know how far off they are in age.
2105407, I recently started reading the comments section on recruiting blogs.

Apparently people are getting mad again.

Not sure what they're gonna do if we sign Randle, Wiggins, or Gordon.

I like Dakari and I remember him impressing me as a freshman when MKG's St. Pats squad played on ESPN a couple years ago. Nice touch and uses his frame well. Not expecting Cuz numbers, but he'll do well with that year's team. Looking forward to seeing if Goodwin and Poythress can live up to their draft potential in the upcoming months.
