2101066, Who's Getting Hardware? (NFL Awards)
Posted by RexLongfellow, Mon Dec-31-12 02:36 PM
This is arguably the toughest year I can remember to judge
MVP?
COY?
ROY?
Comeback POY?
Offensive-Defensive players?

Let's lighten up this black Monday (although for some reason this black monday feels pretty funny)

2101086, Why is Frazier so desrving of COY if AD is doing all the work???
Posted by Mignight Maruder, Mon Dec-31-12 03:11 PM
I like Frazier a lot - especially given that he's a former Eagle, but I'm not sold on him being the COY when that team's success is so dependent on one individual player.

>This is arguably the toughest year I can remember to judge
>MVP?
It's extremely hard to pick between Adrian Peterson and Peyton Manning. Honestly, I'd split it between them ala Favre/Sanders back in the day.

>COY?

Another tough one. Honestly, I like what Marvin Lewis has done a lot. He done a phenomenal job of developing young guys who many discarded as being headcases/overrated (Carlos Dunlap, Vontaze Burfinct, Geno Atkins). Those guys mentioned are playing outstanding football. Marvin's gotten a lot out of castaway aging vets like Pacman Jones and Terrence Newman. If you look at the roster on paper, he's done an exceptional job of getting the most out of his players.

>ROY?
Just want to give a shout out to some exceptional rookies - LB Bobby Wagner (arguably playing LB as good as anyone in the NFL), LB Lavonte David, MLB Luke Keuchly, S Harrison Smith, CB Casey Hayward, RB Dough Martin and Alfred Morris, OL Matt Kalil and then obviously the trio of outstanding QBs. I'm pretty torn between Russell Wilson and RGIII. RGIII might throw for more yards and make more spectacular plays, but what I love about Russell Wilson is his effectiveness in the redzone.

Very, very tough choice, but I'm rolling with RGIII.

>Comeback POY?
Obviously Peyton Manning

>Offensive-Defensive players?
Offensive Player of the year: Adrian Peterson

Defensive Player of the year: tough choice for me, but I give JJ Watt the slight edge over Von Miller.

>Let's lighten up this black Monday (although for some reason

2101099, Weird how no one said that about Belichek
Posted by Orbit_Established, Mon Dec-31-12 03:39 PM

Those years when Brady was doing all the work

Do remember that Belichek is a defensive coach and
the Patriot defense has been ass like the last 5 years.

Answer this question: If you took Adrian Peterson off the Vikes, how good would they have been this year?

That's not knock on Frazier. Again, I like him. He's a former Eagles coach. I would love to see him get COY. I just think there are some more deserving coaches who are getting more out of their team. Like I posted, I think Marvin Lewis as done the best job as head coach this year. But again, I wouldn't be mad if Frazier won COY.

If you cannot fairly evaluate coaches and players without
diminishing contributions due to blackness, I'm going to
forced to call you a dick breathed nigga with a big forehead.

Because everybody fucking knows that:

Belichek won coach of the year in 2007.

Brady won MVP in 2007.

Belichek won coach of the year in 2010

Brady won MVP in 2010.

But magically, this is only an issue in 2012.

If that's the case, Sean Payton, Mike McCarthy, Belicheck or John Fox should NEVER win it, or even be up for discussion.

Posted by Mignight Maruder, Mon Dec-31-12 05:04 PM
(I even pointed out I wouldn't be upset if Frazier gets it because he is definitely in the discussion). I never said any of those guys you mentioned should win the COY so I'm not sure why you brought them up. And since you mentioned them, a couple of tidbits:

John Fox managed to almost win a SB and enjoy a ton of success with Delhomme as his QB.
McCarthy transformed GB into an offensive juggernaut and managed to make Mike Flynn look like a mutli-million dollar QB
Sean Peyton looking better and better given the Saints abysmal year with a healthy Drew Brees at that

Again, some of you guys are taking this too serious. I'm cool with Frazier - I wish the Eagles could get him back. I just think Marvin's done more with less imo.

EDIT: Just to add. You're really twisting my words bc I never said Frazier should be excluded or not deserving of the award. I just posed a question of how deserving he is of the award given how much of his team's success is dependent on one guy. Yes, you could say the same about several other coach/superstar combos in the NFL. I get that totally.

There were some great darkhorses in the ROY race 2012, Martin and Morris among them. I would have chosen Morris because he set the franchise single-season rushing record.

Posted by Orbit_Established, Mon Dec-31-12 03:38 PM

Less turnovers?

Ok.

But Russell Wilson now has the rookie touchdown record. Had to
throw the ball down the field more, many more big dick throws.

Both have excellent running backs.

The only difference is the Redsk*ns fanbase is just so awesome
and rabid and eager for a great QB, which fed the hype.

Wilson really should win it.

2101104, Side-by-side stat comparison of the two:

RGIII:
258-393, 65.6%, 3200 yds, 8.1 yds per attempt, 213.3 ypg, 20 TDs, 5 INTs, 47 passes 20+ yds, 6 passes 40+ yds, 102.4 QB rating, 815 rushing yds, 6.8 ypc, 7 TDs

Russell:
252-393, 64.1%, 7.9 yds per attempt, 194.9 ypg, 26 TDs, 10 INTs, 42 passes 20+ yds, 11 passes 40+ yds, 100 QB rating, 489 rushing yds, 5.2 ypc, 4 TDs

I think it's close with just passing yards, with RGIII at a hair-width overall advantage, but the rushing yards give it to RGIII, in my opinion.
2101110, Nah, RG3 played fewer games, that has to factor in.

Kurt Cousins balling out when RG3 was out sort of tips us off
that it might also be the system

Also, let's remember that the whole Redsk*ns system was
in place to maximize RG3's skill set

Russel 3X had to STEAL the job from someone else in training
camp. HE HAD TO ADJUST to the system. The system changed
as the season progressed, which further shows how much
better Russell was. He adapted more.

Griff's stats are slightly better than Wilson, but he has more running yards.

I know your agenda is that Griff isn't that important but you're letting that agenda blind you. As much as Griff's success is set up by Morris, First Round Talent Al's success is equally set up by Griff. Griff is the ROY to me, but i'm biased as a Skins fan and i'm ok with with that.

I love Wilson and have been riding for that dude since he was at NC state so if he wins I wouldn't be mad (as long as its not LUCK).

You point to Cousins' one game and say oh look they had success even when RG wasn't there, but dude has killed all year long. Broke the rookie rushing record for a qb, and won a division title in his first year. This team is built around him and his skillset, he's performed all year and he's won.

2101156, Thing is, I'm not convinced RG3's stats are better.

His performance advantage is marginal at best

But his hype advantage is insurmountable

Poor Russell 3X, still overcoming doubters

Like Russ is out there having a "nice season" and patting his head and shit.

Those type of attitudes are major reason why people starting rooting against an athlete for no reason at all connected to the athlete himself.
2101457, I'm going to take this from another angle
Posted by jorge123, Tue Jan-01-13 03:23 PM
The race is basically a dead heat. Some could argue RG3, some could argue Wilson, and both would have at least some good points. So we're essentially looking for tie breakers, right? So really, the question is which tie breaker is most convincing.

Here is the ultimate tie breaker -

RG3 basically fathered Russel's style. And I don't mean any disrespect to Russell because he is completely phenomenal and absolutely on RG3's level. But until his coaches started sprinkling in a little RG3 into his playbook, Wilson was not even on the OROY radar. Without RG3, Wilson is not in the discussion. Without Wilson, RG3 is having the exact same year he already had.

RG3 exploded onto the scene with the help of Kyle Shanahan's pistol zone-read scheme. And by mid-season, some of the most balanced and successful offenses in the league were featuring it heavily. San Fran is using the pistol. Washington is using the pistol. And, yes, Seattle is running the pistol now too. Read:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/11/08/pete-carroll-draws-inspiration-from-rg3-redskins/

"The Seahawks were converting just 28-percent of their third down opportunities for the season and quarterback Russell Wilson had just thrown three interceptions in a 19-13 loss to the Rams. Wilson and the Seattle passing game had yet to throw for more than 160 yards in a game and Seattle had failed to score more than 20 points in three of their first four games."

Ouch. But don't worry, RG3 is here to save your OROY hopes, Russy -

"In the weeks since, Seattle has added more read-option to their offense and Wilson’s productivity has taken sizable steps forward. Wilson has thrown for nine touchdowns with just four interceptions over the last five games and has three games with a passer rating of 96.8 or better. Success getting the ball in the end zone has improved as well as the Seahawks have scored touchdowns on six of their last eight red zone possessions.

"“It was a good move for me and it’s helped up a little bit,” Carroll said. “I was influenced a little bit more than I thought when I first looked at. You see some of our stuff coming to life and it’s helping us.”"

But I'm not going to stop there.

RG3 didn't just father Russ' style. By doing so, he convinced a lot of analysts that the pistol and zone read are actually legitimate staples in future NFL offenses. Analysts are basically saying that the pistol offense, with the right personnel (i.e. an athletic but accurate QB and a RB who can do damage) is essentially unstoppable. This is now a legitimate part of the future of the NFL.

Shit, you could argue that RG3 ended Alex Smith's career. You think Kaepernick is keeping the starting job without a 2 month track record of the pistol having success in the NFL? CK was a pistol QB in college - you don't think Harbaugh was eventually going to go in that direction, and the proof on the field provided by RG3 ultimately sped that decision up by half a season or more?

Russell Wilson is an awesome QB and probably my second favorite in the league behind RG3 (and that is strictly because I am a Skins fan - if I were unbiased I would probably be pulling for the undersized late-rounder too). But RG3's performance didn't just end with what he did on the field. His success influenced the entire league, and is likely a big reason that Wilson turned his season around in the first place.
2101532, Uhh. Cam Newton's whole system was Read-Option LAST YEAR.

Damn dude, your so overprotective of Cam that you are bringing him into conversations where he is not even relevant. Cam is a great QB. How exactly is he relevant in a conversation about Russell Wilson's offense using the pistol formation?

What is it about this photo that gets you frothing at the mouth, reaching for your Cam Newton action figure?

http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/1906901/1.png

Cam Newton can influence Wilson all he wants. The fact of the matter is RG3 influenced Wilson as well, and in a direct competition that counts for something. I don't see any evidence of the Redskins incorporating anything from the Seahawks' offense into their own.

Read this headline. God damn.

http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2012/11/08/seahawks-coach-pete-carroll-sees-offensive-growth-after-study-griffin-redskins/

Please watch actual games before posting.

Points Per Game During Redskins "Dog Shit" 9 Games: 25.1
Seattle's Points Per Game For Entire Year: 25.8

The Skins' turnaround was due more to the defense improving from an abysmal 27 points given up per game to a respectable 20 points per game. The offense was always above average - to - outstanding. I guess Griffin should have played safety as well?

Russell Wilson has been fantastic, equaling some of Peyton Manning's records as a rookie. he took a chance on Bruce Irvin, and smartly used him as a package player to rack up eight sacks. Bobby Wagner is a DROY candidate. he made mostly smart choices in FA (keeping Red Bryant and signing Jason Jones), while his cheap acquisitions from 2011 have blossomed into stars (Richard Sherman, Brandon Browner).

Colts' GM Ryan Grigson is runner-up.
2102520, i'm being a homer, but Bobby Wagner is RDPOY.

2nd in tackles for a rook (team leader and broke the team record for a rook).

calls the shots for the #1 defense in the NFL as a rook.

2102693, Russell Wilson is ROY.
