2023087, ASIATICON: NOT ENOUGH SUPPORT for RUSSELL WILSON!!!
Posted by Orbit_Established, Tue Aug-21-12 01:37 PM

http://espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp12/story/_/id/8289078/sources-seattle-seahawks-qb-russell-wilson-start-friday

And I can even blame myself a bit for not liking him
too much in college but the lack of support since he
got to the league is unacceptable

Usually QBs like him are only set up to fail and
usually do

He's not and will not

He's about to STEAL the starting job from a YT that
they gave 16 million guaranteed to

He's a respectable African-American, which makes me
feel better about him throwing to a disgrace of blacks
with greasy lips

You can say a lot for Pete Carroll....his USC model used
to annoy me (speed from the city/White QB from the suburbs),
but he's always had a good racial reputation

He giving that black man a chance

Might not win the job but I appreciate what he's doing

Hopefully they dont let that 16 million come in their way. I feel like Kevin Kolb fucked up the game for those QBs. Now people are gonna be willing to look at other options after paying someone a shit load of money to come in and start at QB.
2023094, Good observation...Cam + Red head Bol hurt too

Maybe it was Kolb...but yeah, that free-agent veteran QB
shit ain't what it used to be

That's part of the reason 4 teams, at least, are starting
rookies this year (Skanz, Colts, Phins, Browns)

Plus, Cam + redhead bol on Cincy hurt the veteran fagent
cause too...both them balled like vets right off cuff

Strangely enough, pendulum might be switching towards
playing young QBs

ironic, since pay structure just shifted away from PAYING
young QBs

Weird.

we've been trending this way for a minute.
2023117, Nah, this is unprecedented
Posted by Orbit_Established, Tue Aug-21-12 02:31 PM

What's happening today is unprecedented:

"Four teams have already said they will start rookie quarterbacks in Week 1 (Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Redskins). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, 2012 could be the first year with more than two rookie quarterbacks starting in Week 1 since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970."

Of course some rookies start every year

But this trend is something different

into ATL & having success right away (basically he was the most successful rookie QB ever at the time or at least since Marino) reminded folks it could be done, same with Bradford, then you had last year's bust-out with both Cam & Dalton which leads to this year.
2023141, the term 'veteran QB' applies very loosely to Kolb
Posted by Beamer6178, Tue Aug-21-12 03:06 PM
>Maybe it was Kolb...but yeah, that free-agent veteran QB
>shit ain't what it used to be
>

this wasn't like no Frank Reich, Charlie Batch, Jeff Garcia, guys who actually DID SHIT.

Kolb made ALL of his money getting 300 yard games in garbage time. Not quite sure what in blue fuck the Cardinals thought they were getting in that clown, and giving up so much for him at that.

Flynn's game v. Detroit was sick as fuck no doubt. And even though I think he actually looked better than Kolb in his limited GB action, I'd still need to see more than just that in order to give that much money up.
2023091, he's def getting a shot, and at worst, will put a lot of pressure on Flynn
Posted by rjc27, Tue Aug-21-12 01:46 PM
to perform early in the season of PC will def make that switch
2023103, Pete's whole thing is based on job competition, going back to SC
Posted by Bombastic, Tue Aug-21-12 02:02 PM
which was one of the ways he lured talent to Figueroa since he'd let freshmen compete for jobs that were already held by two-year-starters or veterans in line to start.

That was at any position.

At QB it was manifested through Sanchez winning the battle in the spring versus John David Booty (and would have started had he not caught that later-proven-unfounded rape accusation) along with him letting a true freshman start in Barkley over a vet in Corp & a decorated transfer in Mustain.

The problem with Pete in Seattle is going to be the haphazzard way he's assembled this roster (just look at the fact that he's signed Antonio Bryant, Braylon Edwards & Terrell Owens one offseason after giving Sidney Rice a bunch of money plus drafting Golden Tate), his lack of attention to detail which can at times relate to discipline lapses on his team and him not being able to figure out how to win on the road (think he's like 5-12 on the road since he got there if you include the playoffs).

But if you're looking for a QB to get a shot to start despite not being the projected starter coming in due to investments made, Pete Carroll is pretty much your guy.
2023121, Interesting post, thanks for that. n/m

Different animal. McNabb was always in the limelight,
Dawkins wasn't. Safeties benefit from that.

At key positions, however? Nah -- you only like
awful people.

Baseball examples:
Ryan Howard is hardly beloved in Philly...he was
getting booed playing with a major injury last
year. He's waaay to respectable and clean cut for
Philly...its affected his play too. He needs to go
to a city that likes smart, articulate, kind
african-americans

Philly only likes players with criminal pasts
or bad credit at key positions.

Its really quite disgusting

BWAHAHAHAHAHA This nigga lost. Andy Reid would still have job if Russ was there.

He should've been the number one pick if we looked at it objectively. Russ doesn't have an ego. He is a hard worker who's professionalism is well documented. You fucking LOST. Russ is the best QB out of that draft class RIGHT NOW. Drew's a live QB and RGKnee is explosive but Russ has dem 'tangibles. This is coming from a Seahawks hater.

2025596, has there been a bigger roster upset in the past ~10 years?
Posted by d., Mon Aug-27-12 09:49 AM
Flynn had so much hype after breaking the Packers single-game passing record.
the media consensus had Flynn winning this job quite easily with Wilson
being a "project" with "potential." I think Pete Carroll deserves
major credit for allowing Russell a true chance to compete for the job.
most coaches would've played it conservatively and chosen Flynn.
2025620, some big "IFs" but Seahawks have Super Bowl POTENTIAL.
Posted by PROMO, Mon Aug-27-12 10:43 AM
the ifs are:

- Wilson stays healthy and plays at least 80% as well as he's done in the preason

- WRs produce (the biggest IF to me)

- Few major injuries

Seattle has a top 3 DEF and top 5 rushing attack. Offensive line is VASTLY improved too from what they've shown us in preseason.

also have a tough schedule. will be an interesting year.
2025621, ... no.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-27-12 10:46 AM
2025623, uh, yes.
Posted by PROMO, Mon Aug-27-12 10:49 AM
was anything in there i said UNTRUE?

no.

it's gonna take WRs and Wilson to gel and play at the level they have in preseason. and to navigate a tough schedule.

only team they have to overcome to get in the 'offs is the Niners who will regress a little bit.

i'm not saying they are GONNA make the SB. i'm saying if a few cards fall right, the potential is there.

2025626, You implied the potential to make Super Bowl this year.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-27-12 11:04 AM
>was anything in there i said UNTRUE?
>
>no.

Yes.

They have to get past the Niners probably just to make the playoffs, and then to make the Super Bowl, they need to be better than the Packers and the Saints and the Niners and the Giants and the Falcons and the Lions.

They have playoff potential, sure. Absolutely. Which, with a rookie QB, is huge. Maybe you could argue SB potential in a few years. This year? No.

2025631, Saints and Packers will regress a bit too.
Posted by PROMO, Mon Aug-27-12 11:11 AM
i think this could be the Ravens year.

don't think the SB champ will be from the NFC no matter who is in the 'offs.

but i think if those cards fall right, Hawks have a shot THIS year.
defense could end up being #1 in the NFL.

schedule is TOUGH tho...they could also finish 7-9.
2025636, They'd have to regress more than a bit.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-27-12 11:16 AM
As would the Niners. And the Giants. And the Falcons. And the Lions.

And it's also assuming other teams with similar outputs to the Hawks last year and potentially easier schedules haven't improved their situations and don't improve their records.

I appreciate a fan's excitement. But Super Bowl for the Hawks this year would be, like, historically unexpected for good reason.
2025692, I'm flattered, but the Giants have a history
Posted by magilla vanilla, Mon Aug-27-12 12:58 PM
>As would the Niners. And the Giants. And the Falcons. And the

As good as David Wilson looks, the year after a Super Bowl typically ain't kind to the Giants as a franchise.
2025695, The point isn't that the Giants will definitely be better.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-27-12 01:02 PM
The point is that there are just a notable number of teams better than the Hawks in the NFC alone.

Posted by Bombastic, Mon Aug-27-12 12:38 PM
you are fucking tripping & starting to get too gassed off this preseason bullshit when Seattle's one of the only teams actually putting in real schemes & playing these games to win.

They have no real A/A+ talent anywhere & their first-half schedule sets up so badly they could be 2-6 with a lame-duck coach by the time October ends.

I would wager even-money on them not making the playoffs but Super Bowl is laughable.

now i know you're full of shit. Lynch is at that level. Defensive Line is at that level. The whole secondary was in the most recent Pro Bowl.

SMH.

y'all are trippin off some shit i said could happen if the cards fall correctly...i also already said they could be 7-9.

but that up there ^^^^ that you said? foolery.
2025691, It's not trippin. You used the phrase "Super Bowl potential."
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-27-12 12:57 PM
You could've said "playoff potential" and I would've been totally fine with that. You could'v evn said "winning a playoff game potential" and while I probably would've disagreed, I would've been totally fine with that.

"Super Bowl potential" is not realistic in this world. Perhaps if some tragedy results in the deaths of everyone on the best six to eight teams in the NFL, you could maybe use that phrase without instigating eyerolls.
2025748, they're not a Super Bowl team, dude.
Posted by Bombastic, Mon Aug-27-12 02:58 PM

a team starting a rookie QB to make the SB is a bit of a reach, at the same time lets not act like we haven't seen NFL teams come out of nowhere to make it to the SB. Hell, we saw it with THIS team not that long ago.
2025793, What would you put their odds of making the SB at?
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-27-12 04:40 PM
2025814, No rookie QB has made or won a Super Bowl EVER unless u count Warner
Posted by Bombastic, Mon Aug-27-12 05:53 PM
Now couple that with the fact that Seattle's made one total in their entire history (under Holmgren after they had been prior two playoff & "We want the ball & we're gonna score" guy was a vet with a Pro Bowl trip on his resume already) and that it appears Pete Carroll may have no earthly idea what he's doing in putting together an NFL roster & I'm gonna say they have as close to "no shot" at doing so in 2012 as possible without being contracted.

And before we get too gassed on Russell Wilson's numbers let's try to remember Sunshine Pete is coaching these preseason games like they're the Super Bowl every year, Charlie Whitehurst lead the NFL in preseason QB rating last year and this is Pete's fifth chosen starter at his team's most crucial position in three years.

I'd say there about times more likely a last-place team than a Super Bowl one.

More realistically they'll land in between those two things.

McNabb started here for 12 years, longest tenured QB of his generation to play in one place for that long without actually winning a Super Bowl, third-highest paid player of the decade, eventually his decline became obvious, they traded him to the place of his choice and then he came back to a standing ovation pregame.

In a brutal sport like football where players far more legendary then him get traded & discarded annually, he was actually treated fine for anyone not trying to throw a pity party.
>
>So it sorta disqualifies what would have been

Uh, Randall had been beat the fuck up with two different year-long injuries & his play had declined as a result so he retired.

He retired as an Eagle in a season commensurate with his jersey number.

Before he did the Eagles put him in the game for one last scramble in the Detroit playoff game & he got a standing ovation in the Vet after they called time-out just so he could be announced one last time after the first down.

He then went home to Vegas with his wife & worked on his tiling business for a couple years until he got the call to be a back up in Minny.

When all that stuff eventually ended, he came back to retire an Eagle again & was honored at halftime in the Linc.

Actually, Ron Jaworski caught more hell than Randall & probably even McNabb ever did (McNabb was bigger on a national scale & there was more media outlets by that point). He got booed fairly regularly while taking the most sacks anyone ever did in a season in his last year there with a shitty team. He even was shit on back when he was taking them to the Super Bowl.

Is that Drew Brees has completely DESTROYED that QB's need to be tall myth. Dude is 2" taller than Wilson at MAX.

You got a bunch of QB's with the prototype body stinking it up, from Blaine Gabbart to Kyle Boller

i get that it was last year, but goddamn we were one poorly mismanaged end of regulation from the NFC Championship, losing to the Falcons on an end of game FG...and as much as we were clicking I really think we beat you at Candlestick. And even if we hadn't beat SF, you can't say we weren't a "contender."

i mean, people up top were taking big dumps on us. that's an L, even last year. especially this year.

Posted by The Real, Tue Dec-09-14 10:16 AM
Any time somebody gives him credit, the argument comes up about how great his defense is. However, you watch him play and the throws he makes - it's mind blowing.

He has a great RB but it's not like he has great receivers but you never hear it mentioned how he makes them better. Hell, he has had to shoulder more of the load since they shipped out his top two weapons on the edge.

And I'm tired of the pocket passer narrative with him. What do you think he was at Wisconsin?

fucking epic.
2400207, FUN STATS:
Posted by PROMO, Tue Dec-16-14 04:36 PM
In Russ' short starting career (51 games including pre, regular and postseason), the Seahawks have held a lead at SOME point in EVERY game.

Also, in the regular and post season, Russ' worst loss ever is by 9 points - which was this season to the Chargers...and they kicked a garbage FG w/ :13 left in the game so his worst loss is by 7 basically (to SF in 2013).

pretty incredible.
