http://losangeles.sbnation.com/los-angeles-lakers/2012/7/4/3137856/steve-nash-rumors-suns-lakers-deal-draft-picks

A deal to send Steve Nash to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for draft picks is "all but done," according to a report from John Gambadoro of KTAR Phoenix:

John Gambadoro@Gambo620
Nash to LA for multiple picks all but done!!!
4 Jul 12 ReplyRetweetFavorite
He later added:

John Gambadoro@Gambo620
Nash never wanted to go to Toronto he wanted to be closer to home in Phoenix, he falls into the 8.9 mill exception. Deal is done
4 Jul 12 ReplyRetweetFavorite
The deal is suspected to include at least two first rounders, also according to Gambadoro. Rumors have been swirling around the veteran pointguard, with the Toronto Raptors being quote vocal about their interest in Nash. The rumored deal would be beneficial for both the Suns and the Lakers. By signing Nash and then trading him, the Suns gain value in return for his departure rather than simply losing him in free agency. The Lakers, already well over the luxury tax, would be unable to afford Nash on the open market, but a deal with Phoenix would allow them to use their $8.9 million exception to make a competitive offer.

Nash would be of substantial benefit to the Lakers, whose lack of depth at point guard contributed to their early exit from the 2012 NBA Playoffs. A veteran who can move the ball around as well as shoot would certainly be a big step up for the team.
2004232, I see an article on SBNation saying it's a done deal?... wow....

Just thinking about it gets frustrating.

That whole shit should change. The right people will get the ball at the right time.
2004494, Well you will, and will have fun doing it.
Posted by bigpo, Thu Jul-05-12 07:32 AM
If Nash can forgive Kobe for puttin hot salties in his face and Kobe can forgive Nash for coming back from 3-1 on him, and play together, Im sure we will have no problem rooting.
2004235, eh, ok. i guess this is a start
Posted by ChampAreno, Wed Jul-04-12 07:32 PM
let's make some good calls with free agents, maybe Beas or Rush or Nick Young. We're a better team with Nash, what'd we give up though?

Dallas with Dirk, Finley, Toine...

Phoenix with Amare, Marion, Joe Johnson. Then Amare and Shaq.

And now? Kobe, Pau and Bynum.

He's never made a Finals.

I've gotta stop hating on that fact tho....shit.

in the conference, right up the street, so they can come in and dust the gutted suns by 40?

what a piece of shit.
2004322, it was a great move for them...
Posted by Ownzdacourt, Wed Jul-04-12 08:59 PM
forget about who you are dealing with, they made best move for them. rebuild. for a player who was supposed to retire last year getting all those picks is HUGE.
2004328, how good are those laker picks are over the next 2 years?
Posted by themaddfapper, Wed Jul-04-12 09:12 PM
27? 24?
and 2 seconds?

so they'll likely have 2 lotteries and two picks in the 20s, and 2 2nds.

okey doke. it better work they better draft/flip impeccably.
2004344, Actually, this makes you a piece of shit. Sarver did a good thing
Posted by lc ceo, Wed Jul-04-12 09:30 PM
For everything Nash has done for the franchise, he did two exceptionally nice things for him:

1. Traded him somewhere that ensures he would remain close to his children, and wouldn't have to uproot them.

2. Traded him to a team that would allow Steve another run at the title picture.

For a guy that's been there for the peak of his career, that's actually a very generous thing to do. The fact that the Lakers are division rivals only hammers home the kindness of this token of generosity and respect he has toward Steve. This was a big fat "Thank You, Steve" gesture, and calling him a piece of shit for it is pretty shitty of you.
2004387, im shitty. noted.
Posted by themaddfapper, Wed Jul-04-12 11:08 PM
robert sarver has a responsibility to the employees and other people with an investment in the phoenix suns.

when the team sucks and doesn't sell as much merch, hot dogs, tickets, etc, usually operational costs have to be cut.

who do you think that falls on?

likely peanut men and ticket sales reps.

The noble gesture of Robert Sarver aside, what does this do for the fans who are supposed to show up and watch this shitty team for the next 2 years? where right up the block steve is going deep in the offs and coming thru a few times a year and killing the Suns.

He had more than enough chances in the last 2 yrs to pull the trigger on Steve, get him to a good team, and do right by the suns. By bringing Nash back, he "promised" to trade steve wherever he wanted.

and as evidenced by the picks he's traded/sold being cheap, it's lolworthy that now he's going to rebuild through the draft. he's had draft slots/picks in the last few years that would have tackled the life after steve issue, rajon rondo being one of them.

2004264, This is insane. My guess is, this makes Drew/D12 very likely.
Posted by lc ceo, Wed Jul-04-12 07:53 PM

I think that's all but certain actually, because it gives Dwight MAJOR incentive to come to LA. Also, this isn't so much a suggestion, but somewhat of a prediction:

I also wouldn't be shocked if, in the event of landing Dwight, Pau got flipped to Minny after all for Williams/Toliver/Beasley in that case, for cash and depth reasons.

I think it's black and white at this point we either stand pat, or the dominoes start to fall and we see major changes happen.

Either way, this was a fucking home run. If we can manage to keep Sessions as a backup, that'd be a nice bonus.
2004265, Interesting move
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Jul-04-12 07:55 PM
Surprising Phoenix is agreeing to only get picks from the Lakers since they are in the same division. Also interesting the Lakers are giving up youth the get older. I guess when Kobe and Nash eventually leave, Bynum is getting reigns for the franchise? If they don't win immediately, those lack of draft picks could come back to hurt them. Great upgrade in offense though and should help in terms of spacing the floor.
2004274, the Lakers never rely on draft picks though
Posted by DJR, Wed Jul-04-12 07:59 PM
Like other than Bynum, who the hell have they drafted?

You'd have to go back to the end of the Jerry West era with Nick Van Exel, Eddie Jones, and Fisher to find draft picks that formed the heart of the team. Since then it's mostly been FA's and trades.

I've always been defense first; there's a reason Nash doesnt have a title. Same with Bibby when he was with the Kings. When your first line of defense (PG) is a matador, it's hard to win a chip. But the Lakers might have enough to offset that, especially if Nash contributes his 50% shooting and mobilizes the Spaniard. Mike Brown was able to mask Mo Williams' lack of defense.
2004486, yeah there is, but its not his on ball defense

2004270, 3 years/$25M
Posted by Zeno, Wed Jul-04-12 07:57 PM
So Nash is either title-chasing, setting himself up for a post-hoops career, or a bit of both. Good for him, but I don't think it does much for his legacy.

People shouldn't be criticized for taking less money than they could get elsewhere, I know. But when you do it to be second banana on a title contender, I can't think too much of it. It's a Lebron move on a smaller scale -- I thought that felt weird, and I think this feels weird too.

would have to be A if not the favorite in the West and possibly to beat the Heat (no pun intended) next year.

but i don't know who, outside of Bynum, that Orlando would take for Dwight?

with the Lakers giving up 3?? (4?) picks for Nash, it doesn't seem like they have any assets that would make for equal value (or at least the value they want) for Dwight.

2004304, Josh Smith. Dwight would be all but guaranteed at that point.
Posted by lc ceo, Wed Jul-04-12 08:38 PM
Nash-Kobe-Smith-Dwight and whoever else at the 3 works for me.

Really though, the next step is going after Dwight. If we can land Dwight, I think the Wolves can offer the best overall package for Pau, because we get youth and depth, and Williams gets 2 seasons to develop before we have to make any financial decisions on him. We'd already have a solid big three and I would prefer to take the depth/youth of a package from Minny, personally.
2004305, Iggy is best with ball in his hands. Granger would make more sense but...
Posted by SoulHonky, Wed Jul-04-12 08:38 PM
unless you can somehow swing David West as well, I don't love getting a swingman for a legit post presence (even if Pau did regress back to being a bit soft of late.)

This is the best news I've heard all week. Now Kobe doesn't have to gun so much. The Lakers can take their time and develop their lesser known players as well. I'm not sure they need D12. It comes down to Bynum's knee or D12's back. That's a push. D12 is a nice piece but he's not necessary.

Jeremy Lin biggest winner of free agency. He's about to make more than Lebron in the final year of his deal.

Clearly, he's not being brought in to be a play maker to create offensive opportunities for our bigs everyone else and allow Kobe to play off ball.

No, we got him to be a defensive stopper at the point, over the plethora of defensive stoppers at point guard that are currently in abundance and obtainable.

We got him to not only anchor our perimeter defense, but to be our clear #1 option on offense and will be depended on for all the heavy lifting because that's what we'll be depending on him for.

around it.

We HAD to get a point guard. After Stern fucked us out of CP3 last year and it became obvious that we weren't going to be able to maneuver to get Deron this off-season, 38 year-old Steve Nash was easily the best pg available.

I'd been reading the reports the last couple of days that the Lakers were interested and it all came down to if Sarver was will to play. It's clearly the best situation for Nash for a number of reasons.

So what if he can't guard Westbrook, neither could Sess or Blake, but our offensive efficiency will be infinitely better.

>Blake, but our offensive efficiency will be infinitely better.

good point. mike brown's calling card is his defense, so maybe he can figure out a gimmick to at least slow down PG's like Rose and Westbrook.

also, i was looking at the stats from the 2010-11 season compared to the 2011-12 season and i think the team PPG totals from the former year to the latter was down like 5 or 6 points. last year, the Lakers barely outscored their opponents. the stat that stood out was that the defensive numbers were pretty similar, so Brown definitely shored up the defense. i didn't notice if the pace metrics were the same from 2010-11 to 2011-12, but i would think that the team played had more possesions in 2010. i think the pace numbers and the general decline on offense, even if Kobe scored more points than he did the year before, points to the team's main problem of lacking a consistent strategy and approach to getting easy baskets even if the team had an advantage over most teams at 3 positions. (SG, PF, C)

even if Nash is a weak point in the defense, i think his ability to help the team get easier baskets and also shoot from the outside at a high clip and space the floor as well, will offset the points he'll give up on defense. so it'll be a net plus, even if Nash does get beat alot.

and who knows, maybe Brown tweaks the defense some and Drew becomes a more consistent force on defense next year to offset the penetration from the outside.

By, like, a lot. Nash can execute pick and roll flawlessly, he can help spread the court, and his ability to get in the lane-- yes, even at 38-- will draw defenders for the easy pass/dunk.

I realize Dwight is better and y'all want the flashiness, but you just picked up Nash for zero roster change. Folks can cyse the defensive issues all they want: last year, the Show's problem was offense, in particular keeping Pau/Bynum involved. They just solved that.

Posted by Numba_33, Thu Jul-05-12 08:10 AM

he and kobe are old as dirt, but now the lakers have an offensive orchestrator who will insure the bigs stay involved. they're going to get torched on perimeter defense again, but the nash/kobe combo is the best shooting tandem in the league, in terms of fg% from a variety of places.

if you want to nerd out, read this:

"As a case study and proof of concept, Goldsberry decided to try to use CourtVision to find an empirical answer to an often-debated question: Who is the best shooter in the NBA? He started by mapping out the "scoring area" — the 1,300-square-foot region on the court where 98 percent of NBA field-goal attempts occur. Then, he plotted out about 700,000 shots taken in every game from 2006 through 2011 — who took them, where they took them and what the outcomes of the shots were. Then he started making maps.

Goldsberry offers a new statistic for measuring a shooter's aptitude — "Shooting Range," a metric of how effective a player is at producing points from the greatest number of different spots on the court. A player's "range percentage" (Range%) measures the percentage of spots in that 1,300-square-foot scoring area from which a player will produce at least one point per shot attempted. The league leaders in Range% over the last five years mostly pass the laugh test — in order: Steve Nash, Ray Allen, Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, Rashard Lewis, Joe Johnson, Vince Carter, Paul Pierce, Rudy Gay and Danny Granger.

When Goldsberry starts breaking down the maps, you start to see the value in understanding the unique spatial footprints and tendencies of every player, lineup and team in the league. You see just how fantastic Dirk is from the right baseline, an area in which none of the other top shooters even perform well. You see that Nash is a killer on wing three-pointers, but struggles in that right baseline spot that Dirk loves. You see that even deadeye Ray Allen has something akin to a three-point weakness — he's not so great from the left wing.

"Some players are good from some areas; some players are better from other areas," Goldsberry said. "We wanted to reveal those special spatial signatures.""

Posted by Numba_33, Thu Jul-05-12 10:57 AM
the trade in this post, but comparing Nash and Stockton isn't fair. For starters, Stockton was ten times the defender Nash is at this point of his career. Secondly, Stockton was much more durable than Nash. Lastly, there are more younger top tier point guards today compared to when Stockton was in the later stages of his careers. The Nash trade will help the Lakers tremendously, but to act as if Kobe and Nash's respective ages shouldn't be legit concerns is a bit disingenuous.

in the league were giving him the business too. In addition to Payton and Kidd, during that time you had people like Bibby, Francis, Baron, Marbury, Van Exel, J-Will all doing work.

>the trade in this post, but comparing Nash and Stockton isn't

I think Laker fans know this is basically a push the chips in the middle of a table move to make a last go of it with Kobe and the rest of this group for next couple of years with no other apparent deals on the table. Nobody's expecting Nash to be a savior. There was already talent on this team, one of the main issues was ball distribution. That happens to be Nash's speciality. Sure he's a liability on D but like I've said, it's not like Sessions and Blake were out there locking anybody down either.

for 82 games here in LA.

That offense was getting so boring to watch.

Nash will spice it up a bit.

2004903, Good move...(Nash to Lakers)
Posted by murph71, Thu Jul-05-12 05:41 PM

It's a shocking move....Nash and the Lakers...But I think it will work if Kobe can dial down the hero ball a little....

The obvious improvement will be for the BIGS...Pau and Drew are going to love coming to play every game knowing they will get the ball...

As for the optimism of Howard coming? Nah...After all the crazy moves this off season nothing would shock me...But I think Howard would be on some one and done shit if he were traded to the Lakers...And the Lakers brass ain't having that shit...Not if they giving up a talented young player like Bynum....

It's Brooklyn or bust for Howard...But as is, Lakers fans should dig this trade...

2007608, Nash introduced by Lakers, dons Laker uniform for first time (PHOTOS)

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/steve-nash-introduced-los-angeles-lakers-dons-laker-213114761--nba.html

There are some things that take getting used to. The Brooklyn Nets. Touchscreen phones. Governor Schwarzenegger. Your neighbor, Karen.
And then there's Steve Nash, in a Lakers uniform:

It's a shot that will make some retch, and some jump with giddy glee. Whatever your affiliation, it's still a jarring sight. And though we've had issues with the "COUNT THA RINGZZ" crew in the past, a basketball genius like Steve Nash running a show that involves Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum and (especially) Pau Gasol is so more intriguing and appealing than him wasting his final years on a middling crew in Phoenix, or helping in Toronto's latest rebuilding attempt.

And, sorry Dan, it's better than the bloody Knicks.

The 2012-13 NBA schedule has yet to be released, so we haven't confirmed if it's 75 or 76 of Los Angeles' 82 regular-season games will be nationally televised. In the meantime, here's a picture of Steve Nash hanging out on Nash Street, located near the team's practice facility in El Segundo, Calif.

NBA GM's are now paying for upside as opposed to drafting for it.
Hibbert was some bullshit, but he at least has the "decent center in an era where there aren't very many" argument in his favor.

Small forwards grow on trees though, and NB isn't worth a gamble like that. You should be praying Minny gets him for that price tag.
