1944210, My non-negotiable "bust" threshholds for UNC NBA prospects
Posted by Basaglia, Sun Mar-25-12 07:06 PM
Congrats on a great season. Now on to what I really care about...

Kendall Marshall: been a national name since he was 11, when clark francis called him the best 5th grade on earth. Hailed as the best passer since Jason Kidd

anything less than...8 points and 8 assists, WHICH IS MORE THAN FUCKING FAIR, and he is a bust.

Barnes: built his entire reputation off a bullshit phone call to recruiting "expert" Dave Telep to explain how he let Gilchrist destroy him at a camp. Telep got cysed by the kid's assertiveness and accountability RATHER THAN HIS SKILLS and started an avalanche of cysage that we have all witnessed for the past 2 years, so i ain't gotta explain shit else.

anything less than...15 points and 5 boards, WHICH IS MORE THAN FUCKIN FAIR, and he is a bust.

Zeller: He just gotta be NOT WORSE THAN HANSBORUGH, WHICH IS AN ABSOLUTE GIFT!

Henson: this muhfucka was cysed as the next T-mac in high school...yeah, he was. Google it.

anything less than...15 points and 7 boards and he sorry. let's see if he can get 40lbs on them narrow ass shoulders...hakim warrick couldn't.

McAdoo...prototypical tweener than UNC been landing for the last 6 years.

anything less than...15 points and 7 boards and he's a bust.

Bullock and PJ...both generic ass wing players. they gonna be sorry anyway.
1944211, lmao I cant deal with you

Only thing is bro, I honestly feel like he's underachieved as a college player, so him not being great as an NBA player will not be a surprise to me. Any GM hat picks him Top 10 is nuts. In my mind, if a player has a college pedigree, then his NBA expectations should be set relative to that, not his HS career.

1944222, Can we retire the word "cyse"? The corniness of that makes me cringe.
Posted by BennyTenStack, Sun Mar-25-12 07:24 PM
None of you say that in real life, and I doubt you've ever heard anyone else say that, either. It's the lamest word I've ever heard.....(I mean read....because NOBODY says that) in my life.

It doesn't make you look cool. And I notice that only the Duke fans on here say it.

1944224, been saying since i was 7. use it everyday in real life.

i am being overly nice about this shit. because i should be a fuckin asshole and make them have to match the stats that dukies who've been called BUSTS have put up for a career.

if kendall has ONE YEAR as good as pre-injury johnny dawkins had in 87-88, i'll eat a fuckin pile of shit.

oh, but johnny was a "bust"

if barnes has ONE YEAR where he drops 19, 5 and 3 like dunleavy did, i'll leave this fuckin board, dogg.

oh, but dunleavy is a "bust"

nah, i'm holding these muhfuckas accountable for all this propaganda they been puttin out all these years. see how they like it when they star players can't just have solid NBA careers, but gotta be fuckin hall of famers and all-stars. we gon see. i'm doing this shit every year, dogg. i BET duke STAY winning this discussion.

Duke

15 pts 5 reb at least

Carlos Boozer
Elton Brand
Luol Deng
Grant Hill
Corey Maggette

UNC

15 pts 5 reb at least

Vince Carter
Billy Cunningham
Brad Daugherty
Antawn Jamison
Michael Jordan
Bob McAdoo
Doug Moe
Sheed
James Worthy
Larry Shaffer

UCLA

15 pts 5 reb at least

1944249, some of those UNC cats are all-timers too
Posted by Dr Claw, Sun Mar-25-12 08:18 PM
outside of Grant Hill, the Dukies have mostly been from the "modern" era

which ain't a bad thing really
in fact, what Doug Collins is getting out of Dildo Baggins in Philly should earn him a Gold Medal
1944255, so is it safe to say everyone else is a bust?
Posted by FromTheGo, Sun Mar-25-12 08:29 PM
by that standard, then:

1. Duke guards are all busts
2. #1
3. Kentucky gonna be a problem putting out forwards

using that bust < 15 and 5 model

1944250, i think that speaks for itself
Posted by Basaglia, Sun Mar-25-12 08:18 PM
1944256, it says that you are strategic in creating your bust criteria
Posted by FromTheGo, Sun Mar-25-12 08:31 PM
so that certain players "count"

can't hate the game

if you happen to say anything less than career 20 ppg = bust, that you be a big game changer

but you won't

1944257, no one is downplaying UNCs all-time nba alumni
Posted by Basaglia, Sun Mar-25-12 08:35 PM
but since vince and tawn nearly 15 years ago, there has been GARBAGE...duke has been putting better pros in the L. it's that simple.

so if you wanna live off what old niggas and dead niggas did for UNC's NBA mythology, you go right ahead.

university of san francisco got better pros than duke too, i guess.
1944260, soooo basically besides Deng, Duke ain't had talent in 10 years

you and basa were on the board like you were holding a boombox outside of Harrison Barnes window up till the very moment he announced..

now he's garbage??

right..

come on man....root for your squad all you want but when you pompous cats come on here trying to shroud your homerism as facts...I'm pulling cards...

if Barnes had gone to Duke and had the same exact career he's had up to now, you would be talking about how he's gonna really bubble in the NBA, because you are desperate to have more than 1 guy in the last 5 years actually come out of duke and contribute in the nba...

and Larry Drew Jr. ain't got nuthin to prove to me...seen the kid dunk on plenty dudes in person when he was in high school....he just didn't dig Carolina...... now he's home and we don't really need him to be a start..hell...if we get shabazz and Parker....Drew may not even start....

UNC right today looks in danger of repeating the 2009-2010 season with a bunch of 4 and 5 star recruits.

And you still keep hammering home this UNC pro argument?

Not to mention Duke just beat 3 top 5 teams.

I mean, you have so much ammo for UNC sucking right now and Duke looking like the best team in the country, and I've barely heard you say a word about it.

I just don't get your obsession I guess.
2082060, because laettner was called a bust when he wasn't...
Posted by Basaglia, Fri Nov-30-12 12:05 PM
because redick is called a bust and he not...and dunny....and hendo.

because unc fans waited until hill was injured to say he wasn't that good anyway...then, they did it with brand.

because hurley was a "bust" after 3 weeks of play and putting up 7 and 6 dimes in modest minutes...far better than anything kendall will ever do.

because j-will was a "bust" when he woulda been the PG king RIGHT TODAY.

because somehow george lynch was good.

because somehow hubert was good...and shammond...and scott williams.

i never wanted anything to do with the entire argument, but it got turned into such a distorted and hateful excercise than i have no choice now but to obliterate it once and for all.

no more wings with 40 inch verticals and fluidity in them hips, no more unc superstars...it's not a mystery. i'm not some b-ball detective. y'all had exclusive rights for 30 years...THIRTY!

yeah...unc nation is on trial. prove me wrong. PRODUCE A GOTDAMN STAR!

2082083, I can dig it. But didn't know if it was some common shit.
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Fri Nov-30-12 12:37 PM
I can tell you the saddest shit for me is watching that dude young as fuck on ESPN trying hard to give props to some guard on New Mexico or some shit calling them good all humble and what not.

I'm in my head thinking, "Nah nigga you was great in college. Them dudes just play."

2082069, It's a result of the less logical UNC fans' deflections...
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Nov-30-12 12:13 PM
... which ultimately right now are "Rivers sucks!"

On his podcast, I talked about this a bit-- his dude Rick, whenever you confront him on Twitter about UNC being mediocre this year, retorts with "man, that must give you some comfort considering how terrible Austin Rivers is playing." Which is also an experience I've had with a few of my UNC fan friends.

So it spirals.

It goes:

Duke fan: "UNC is mediocre and we're good."
UNC fan: "Oh yeah? Austin Rivers is sorry. BUST!"

And the maddening hypocrisy of that when Harrison Barnes was so insanely hyped coming out of high school, Kendall was by far the best PG in college basketball last year, and Tyler Zeller was ACC POY, yet all are middling to bad pros so far in their respective early careers... it's too much to not mention. If Rivers is sorry, then I guess all those other dudes are sorry too!

If it were up to me, I wouldn't talk about it at all. It's obvious to anyone with a brain that Duke has much better pros currently in the NBA than UNC. It shouldn't even merit discussion.

But fans will be fans, and they'll deflect to the only card they have left. Kinda like how someone from another fanbase that we both know went from "make it past the Sweet 16!" to "win a championship!" to "have good pros!" to "have All-Star level pros!" to "have literally all of your NBA prospects hit for fear of mockery!" within the span of five years. Gotta play the only card you have in the deck. And Duke haters don't have many cards right now. *shrug*

In short: I agree. But Ba probably has to deal with it even more than I do, so he's gonna fire back about it more, I suppose. I'm having plenty of fun on Facebook talking about UNC's current team (which I still think is no worse than 4th in the ACC/tourney bid, sadly, but whatever, I'll still have fun with that).
2082073, It's all just such a foreign concept to me
Posted by Servo, Fri Nov-30-12 12:19 PM
I care how they play at UNC. Once they go to the league I wish them well, but I'm not losing any sleep over Kendall Marshall going to the D-League.
2082085, Most fans don't think that way.
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Fri Nov-30-12 12:38 PM
2082087, It's just about priorities, really.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Nov-30-12 12:41 PM
>I care how they play at UNC. Once they go to the league I
>wish them well, but I'm not losing any sleep over Kendall
>Marshall going to the D-League.

Some prioritize the college results.
Some prioritize pros.
Some balance both.

I worry predominantly about Duke's output in the pros and their "ability to become pros" only in the sense that it directly affects who we can get in the recruiting game. That and, y'know, as a fan.

But for dudes who watch tons of NBA? This shit is serious as a heart attack.

I just watch way more college ball than NBA ball, personally. Love both, but NCAA is my first love.
2082097, But it's also cool watching someone at 17 then still...
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Fri Nov-30-12 12:47 PM
seeing them perform in some capacity at like 32.

I dig all that shit to tell you the truth. And I don't even care if they're playing in Thailand. I'm like "Yep, get that Golden Pork Scoring Championship homie!"
2082119, Oh, I was happy when I saw Langdon was some Euro MVP.

I definitely get that.

I'm just saying, for some people, it's deadly serious.
2082112, when your pros are wack...you don't value pro stats...
Posted by Warren Coolidges Blak Azz, Fri Nov-30-12 12:58 PM
and you make all sorts of crazy excuses on why those stats aren't important.

it's just a plea cop....and excuse to cover for guys flopping..

The average Basketball fan first of all not only has College affilations...but they have pro teams they pull for... They don't cower from pulling for a pro team because the pro team that they would naturally root for isn't good.....

The exageration of college basketball achievements as a way to avoid speaking on the failures in the pros deserves no respect at all from any real basketball fan...

it's phoney and people see completely through it..and the card should be pulled on those people at every opportunity..

2082118, I literally have no idea what you're talking about.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Nov-30-12 01:01 PM
I spent the first twenty years of my life living nowhere close to a pro team, thus I have no allegiance to one team at this point in my life. I enjoy the sport. Not sure what's so difficult to grasp about that.

Maybe now that I live in LA, I'll be a Lakers or Clippers fan. Til then, *shrug.*
2082125, you're making generalizations about people's "priorities"
Posted by Warren Coolidges Blak Azz, Fri Nov-30-12 01:06 PM
and ignoring the very real front running that people do..

There are lots of people who don't live around NBA teams ..but they have a favorite NBA.... the League is a worldwide league...

but see it takes guts to pick a team and stick with it...

it doesn't take guts to stick with some perceived overrated powerhouse in college then make excuses about it's players who either flop in the nba or ride the pine in euro-leagues..

2082129, Or some people just prefer the college game.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Nov-30-12 01:08 PM
But y'know, whatever.
2082138, some do.....bet you won't find many Kentucky or UNC fans
Posted by Warren Coolidges Blak Azz, Fri Nov-30-12 01:16 PM
of recent years who do though..

Why??

because their players are making an impact in the NBA, so they carry their college b-ball fandom into the nba....

2082122, Do people really value nba performance over college though?
Posted by Servo, Fri Nov-30-12 01:04 PM
Serious question, because that sounds insane to me.

Why on earth would you want UNC or Duke players to succeed in the NBA more than at the college level?

Are there really people out there that want Harrison Barnes to win a NBA championship more than they wanted him to win one at UNC?

I understand cheering for your guys in the NBA, but if there are really people out there that value that more than how they perform in college then I simply cannot understand that at all.

2082126, I mean, you see at least one person in this post talking about it.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Nov-30-12 01:07 PM
2082148, Fair enough
Posted by Servo, Fri Nov-30-12 01:27 PM
but Duke fans have tons of ammo right now. They are killing it and we are not playing well at all. I just don't understand how that is not shit talking priority number one.

Also, I don't hate Duke near as much as I used to. I've learned that if you spend all your time hating Duke, Patriots, Lakers, etc. like I do, you are going to get really frustrated when they win a lot of games. I used to cheer for Duke to lose every game. Now, as long as UNC does better than Duke I'm happy (ain't happening this year though).

I always like to joke with Basa because it seems like he hates UNC more than he likes Duke.
2082130, I don't know anyone who doesn't value NBA accomplishments over

college accomplishments..

in modern basketball you cannot claim to be a real powerhouse in college if you continuously send guys to the NBA who ride the pine..or don't send them to the nba at all...the further away you get from a time when you were sending good players to the league..the harder it's going to be to recruit..

Ben Howland was able to get the best recruiting class in the country in the midst of a terrible season because he can point to the guys who are CURRENTLY in the NBA that he put there who are actually contributing... the guys that went their have said as much themselves...

sure guys want to win in college...it's great....

but the guy who is winning in college and putting cats in the league who are contributing...like a Calipari...is more appealing to a recruit who is winning in college and then sending guys to the D-leauge to ride the bench...
2082141, Well, obviously you would prefer winning in college AND in the NBA
Posted by Servo, Fri Nov-30-12 01:20 PM
I see how that is good for recruiting. But I'm saying, if you are a fan of a college team and you had to choose one between college success and NBA success, why on earth would you choose NBA success? Assuming they didn't go to the NBA team you root for.
2082056, What is this Barnes story?
Posted by Tiger Woods, Fri Nov-30-12 12:03 PM
2082116, Absolutely guarantee that Harrison Barnes will end up with a
Posted by Warren Coolidges Blak Azz, Fri Nov-30-12 01:01 PM
much better NBA career than Christian Laetner

Laetner finished with 12.8 ppg...... 6.7 Rebounds per game and shot .480..

gurantee Harrison Barnes surpasses that..

easily..

you can keep moving the bar all you want but the bottom line is that if you don't want to call Laettner a bust.... you could easily call him an average player..

one btw who was not very liked by his teammates or his peers in the NBA...
2082124, cool...because i guarantee kyrie have a better career than ALL

current UCLA players...all of them. even the 2 i like.
2082137, can't help the club from the tub.......
Posted by Warren Coolidges Blak Azz, Fri Nov-30-12 01:14 PM

plus you saying Jay Williams would be the king of point guards had he not violated his professional contract by riding a motorcycle and ruining his career....

nothing about Jay williams actual play backs that up...nothing about his stats his rookie year show that he would have been anything but maybe a terrell brandon type..

I see why you hated on D.Rose so much..because you were so mad that he was so much better than Jay Williams before he got hurt..

numbers don't lie..
