1885820, PG Warz: The Early Returns...
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-02-12 06:29 PM
Yeah I know we're only a little over a week in but lets set the board...

1. D.Rose - duh, he's not only the top PG but in the convo for the best player in the league period, his scoring is slightly down this year but his efficiency and assists numbers are up...

2. CP3 - he can still control a game better than anybody, his rebounding numbers are slightly down from what they usually are, after a lot of early hype this Clipper team might not really be that much better than the team he left in NOLA, he seemed to wear down at times last year, it will be interesting to see how he holds up under the bright lights of Tinseltown...

3. Deron BETTER - he's stuck on a shit team in Jersey playing with some D-League level talent but we all know what he can do...

4. Rondo - he is what he is, he has his limitations but he's effective at what he does, he's scoring more this year, we'll see if he can keep it up...

5. Westbrook - yeah I know he's struggled and he's currently averaging more turnovers than assists and leading the league in turnovers at over 5 a game but he's still a key player on one of 2 undefeated teams in the NBA and can take over a game at anytime...

6. Ellis/Curry - I'm judging these 2 as a tandem, neither one is really a point guard, but are very talented but both seem to have trouble staying healthy...

7. Jennings - off to a solid start, scoring and efficiency numbers are up...

8. Calderon - not spectacular but efficient - excellent shooting percentages across the board and the best assist-to-turnover ratio in the league...

9. Lawson/Miller I'm graded these guys as a tandem also since they spend a lot of time on the court together, I know OKS hates Miller but he's still effective and can still run a team and he's a big reason Denver has had the success they have had so far...

10. Lowry - currently leading the league in assists and Houston is playing a little better than some people thought they would...

others...

Parker - "Top 5" Tony's numbers are down, is it by design or has he lost a step? he's only 28 but he's been in the league 10 years and his primary asset is his speed and quickness...

Nash - damn, this looks like the year he finally falls off, with this schedule he might retire mid-season...

Wall - a lot of people thought he would make the leap this year, he seems to have taken a step back...

Holiday - another guy I thought would make a leap, I guess their running a lot the offense through Igoudala now, not sure what's up with that, it would be nice if we had some sixer fans that would talk about it...

Collison - another guy that's not spectacular but pretty efficient, Indiana might surprise some people this year...

Felton - despite the loss to the Clips yesterday he has a potentially decent squad to run with in Portland, another team nobody is really talking about but may surprise...

Irving - talented kid, he's basically sharing duties with Sessions right now, needs to improve his efficiency, if he can harness that talent he might be a player...

Rubio - the people's favorite, has flashed brilliant passing skills, his shooting percentages are surprisingly high, it will be interesting to see if that continues as his minutes are extended...
1885831, not unreasonable
Posted by thejerseytornado, Mon Jan-02-12 06:38 PM
I think Rondo's tied with cmon, better. you've got Calderon too high and Lawson should be higher--while he shares the court with Miller at times, it's his team. I'm impressed they're able to play together so well considering Miller's ball-hogged background. I also haven't seen enough Lowry to judge.

-----------
I have nothing to contribute here, just complaining.
1885846, it may be "Lawson's team" but Miller averages more assists...
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-02-12 06:50 PM
in fewer minutes, if Lawson really wants to wear the big drawls he needs to figure out how to get other people points...
1885874, Ehh...that's kinda meaningless
Posted by thejerseytornado, Mon Jan-02-12 07:11 PM
Miller plays with the 2nd team with includes a bunch of spot up shooters. the first team has Gallo and...? as spot up shooters for Lawson to get assists from.

lawson's definitely gotten his teammates involved and has led the team in assists the past couple of games.

-----------
I have nothing to contribute here, just complaining.
1885878, In crunch time they're both on the floor, Lawson is usually off the ball

1885834, i'd slide lowry and the den dudes above golden state
Posted by rob, Mon Jan-02-12 06:40 PM
and drop calderon a bit for his defense

but otherwise that looks right. you can't begrudge better and westbrook a few games.
1885849, I need Lowry to prove it, if he's still leading the league in assists...
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-02-12 06:51 PM
in a week I'll move him up but he's never averaged more than 6 in his career...
1885861, he averaged over 7.5 after the brooks trade
Posted by rob, Mon Jan-02-12 07:02 PM
which doesn't make him a league leader, but it puts him out of the pack in terms of pg warz.

i don't see any reason that doesn't make him a better "pg" than ellis/curry, though obviously he's got lawson and guys like wall and jrue on deck that seem poised to step in to that top 10.
1885845, no norris cole?

been watching him since early last year. drafted him last year in my fantasy team. this year too. lol. great passing/rebounding pg.
1885881, great passing, great rebounding, good defender
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Mon Jan-02-12 07:24 PM
Can play offense in the halfcourt and on the fastbreak.

Can go to the hole and shoot.

In terms of most well rounded pgs, its Lowry and Derrick Rose.

Doesnt necessarily mean he's the best, but there isnt a lot Lowry can't do on the basketball court.

>been watching him since early last year. drafted him last

1885880, lowry below calderon?

1885885, Nash is probably going to improve. he's currently 6th in apg
Posted by d., Mon Jan-02-12 07:31 PM
despite playing pretty bad and only seeing the court for 26 min a game

today, he had 21 points on 9-13 shooting with 9 assists
1885952, He'll have some good games, he's going to have some bad ones too
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-02-12 08:25 PM
1885890, if it's just based on the games so far, Wall is behind everyone

1885897, as much as we talk about the PG position being so good or deep
Posted by southphillyman, Mon Jan-02-12 07:41 PM
in the NBA
looking at this list kind of opens my eyes to the fact that Derrick Rose is really the *only* truly elite player out of this group
elite meaning on par with kobe, bron, dwight, durant, dirk, etc

though they are very good, rondo and deron play on shit teams and aren't good enough to elevate them beyond mediocre really

despite cp3 being lauded as a pg who can change the game/his team we've already seen that he can't do shit with subpar talent
steady losing in the first or second round? want a cookie?
the clippers should make the playoffs this year. congrats. but cp3 didn't make them a title contender and they have arguably the best PF and 2nd best defensive center in the league

westbrook erratic ass isn't elite to me. he'll give u 30 and 10 every now and then. but he'll also shoot 30% and have 6-7 TO's and bench argument every now and then too. i'll pass
1885910, interesting point. it's always been that way, though
Posted by bshelly, Mon Jan-02-12 07:52 PM
think about the glove, kidd, stockton all in the same era. GP and Stockton needed the big to get them over. little dudes have a tough time dominating.

you might be selling CP3 a little short, though.

Posted by southphillyman, Mon Jan-02-12 08:01 PM
playoffs and b)what they do there
at some point these stars (melo, cp3,durant) need to be held to certain expectations
especially since they have adequate talent around them
1885924, Yeah, the list of point guards that actually carried a team is short...
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Jan-02-12 08:07 PM
you got Big O, Magic and Zeke and both Big O and Magic needed Kareem to win a title
1885925, the depth is key but let's remember rose is the mvp
Posted by rob, Mon Jan-02-12 08:07 PM
and cp3 and nash have been mvp level players in the past

let's not pretend the nba is FULL of game changers at other positions either. who's the 5th best sf? where are the young sgs? its a lot of pfs out there but most are soft or lacking in a critical dimension. ain't shit out there at center.

then there's Thornton, then NOBDOY (unless you count Monta but he may as well be a point too)

Posted by bshelly, Tue Jan-03-12 09:38 AM
let's be honest about the definition of a combo guard: a short guy who can score but can't pass. that's not a recipe for winning basketball. ai was about as effective as a guy like that will ever be, and even at his best he was inefficient.
1886294, probably so, they'll be "fun to watch" though

1886071, Wall is killing me & I havent even watched him much at all this season
Posted by Bombastic, Mon Jan-02-12 10:22 PM
I knew it was gonna be a rough start with that roster but liked him better than anybody coming out at PG in the past 4-5 years.

However I would have thought he'd have developed that jumper better & started to learn to switch speeds while making his teammates better already.

Anyone that's watched these first five games have thoughts?
1886338, don't worry. he still has no later than 2013 to become better than rose

Posted by bshelly, Tue Jan-03-12 07:57 AM
http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/34986/first-cup-tuesday-188

Ricky Rubio had a quiet night with six points and three assists in 23 minute off the bench but he ended up making the defensive play of the game. Rubio generated a huge roar from the crowd when he chased down Spurs reserve guard Danny Green with 5.5 seconds left in the third quarter and swatted away his breakaway layup attempt. "

The Jason Williams comparisons hold no merit early in their careers. Jason was out of control and driven at making highlights.

Rubio just makes plays.

1886496, I swear this dude makes the worst comparisons.
Posted by Kajun, Tue Jan-03-12 02:18 PM
Jason Williams was ALL flash his first few years. Fun to watch, but a pretty cruddy PG.

I've yet to see another point guard play as unabashedly selfish as he did as a youngin. Yet he always got hyped for his passing, but only because of the oohs and ahhs. Dude was a constant contradiction. He would pull up on 2 on 1 fastbreaks and brick 3's like it was nothing, throw away passes tryin to be cute. Adelman couldn't wait to ship his ass out. Now that same coach giving Rubio crunch time minutes as a rook.

Rubio plays under control, runs the offense well and yes, makes a flashy pass here and there. He is WORLDS better than white chocolate at this stage. The boy good.
1886501, Yep, Rubio makes the flashy play out of necessity most of the time
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Tue Jan-03-12 02:24 PM
J-Will did it just because that's what he wanted to do and wanted to make Sportscenter.

talk about it...

I thought I saw an improvement with Jrue in the preseason games, but they were against WAS

He was consistently hitting the 3

The season starts with a 5 game road trip, the first game the day after christmas in POR = L

We are 2-2, and the wins have been laughers

They blew the game in UTAH, which was his best individual performance

It's obvious who we are running our offense through, sweet Lou

Our team currently has 5 players averaging double figures, which some credit has to go to the PG

Once Dildo gets going, it will be 6

I think he's still getting his legs and rhythm, but once that jumper starts going in consistently, then there will be a strong case for Jrue in PG Wars

A win tomorrow night @ NO, come home 3-2 for the home opener against DET, and we aren't even playing at our full potential yet

4-2 puts us in 1st place, ahead of BOS

a far cry from last year's start

I'll take it

He's averaging 15, 3, & 3, and hasn't been looking as agressive as he was last year

He will start to take over games as the season goes on

1886281, i'm not talking about him because he hasn't been good so far
Posted by bshelly, Tue Jan-03-12 09:36 AM
he has less than 3 assists per. what's there to talk about?
1886318, 3 shitty games and one decent one...
Posted by gmltheone, Tue Jan-03-12 11:12 AM
He's struggling early. The good news is all these games gives him a chance to redeem himself. For a team with no go to guy, he has to be the guy who runs the show at the end of games.

----------------------------
Same as it ever was!
1886327, RE: 3 shitty games and one decent one...
Posted by bentagain, Tue Jan-03-12 11:18 AM
and that's the bright side

he's avg 15, and not playing close to his potential yet

agreed he has to be the facilitator down the stretch

and I believe he will be up to the challenge and improve his APG as the season progresses

Iggy looks healthy, and Jrue doesn't seem to know how to get a healthy Iggy involved

back to back against WAS the 13th and 14th after our first homestand should cure some of those ails

BTW, the sixers are the only team to not play a home game yet

1886785, I wish the Sixers had any truly significant players to build on
Posted by Bombastic, Tue Jan-03-12 06:24 PM
when we're talking about our mildly/intermittently-impressive-grading-on-a-youth-curve-PG or hoping our #2 overall can show a pulse there's not a hole lot to get excited about.

That's the Jrue that will be making noise in PG Warz

Don't do what Washington did with Wall last year and blow him out early. Keep the minutes in the 25-30 range, and have him in as many games as possible, with Sessions as a very efficient and important relief man. Let the team build with him, let the lineups and chemistry shake themselves out.

stats go, Miller actually averages almost 2 more assist per game in fewer minutes with fewer turnovers, Teague shooting percentages are better and WAY above his career averages so we'll have to see if he can keep that up, Miller's never really been a "lock-down" but he's not Nash either, he's a heady guy that knows how to disrupt plays and has fairly quick hands and gets his share of steals. How is Teague defensively?
1886850, run of the mill i'd say, but i've only seen him 6-7 times
