the defense keeping it close - which is a direct reference to the score.
by allowing fewer points, the Falcons "kept it close" just as well as the Jets did.
So to say "Ryan had to go out and win games himself, because his defense couldn't keep it close. Meanwhile, Sanchez just had to not fuck it up, because his defense would keep it close" is baseless.
