that post was laughable because the secondary gets roasted on a regular basis. we lucked up and the ball bounced our way more than a few times last year. we could've easily missed the playoffs otherwise. we won't have that same luck this year.

-Jets were 3rd last year in total yards allowed/ Falcons 16th. The end. That simple.

It's a lot easier to win in the playoffs when your defense can keep the other team in check long enough for your offense to make something happen. The AFC and NFC title games contained 4 of the top 10 defenses in the league (3 of the top 5). No coincidence.

We were transitioning one of our offices here in Atlanta to Pittsburgh. With that, we did a lot of hiring in Pitt and ended up training 4 different groups of people for two weeks each. So what I would do is fly out on Sun evenings or Mon mornings to Pitt, stay there till Friday and then fly back to ATL. Rinse and repeat from June-August. The best part was me having a Senior VP take me everywhere. I was tired as hell after all that, but had a good time in the process hanging and meeting so many more of our execs.

Shonn Green barely got 1000 yards right? the Jets got good production from secondary guys like LT and Bilal Powell too. our WHOLE RB corps won't even crack 1000 yards. the Falcons are one of the easiest teams to defend right now. we have NO running game what-so-ever. our leading rusher has 251 yards for the year and we've only ran for 3 TDs. so teams are taking out Tony Gonzalez and doubling big bad Harry Douglas. before Julio got hurt he was on pace for 1800 yards and he's still the 2nd leading receiver after missing half the season. Matt IS the offense right now and he's doing as well as he could considering every single one of his weapons has been hurt except the the 37 year old slow guy. now if Matt was playing like this behind a stable line and Julio, Roddy and Steven Jackson were healthy, that would be different

Every NFL offseason there seems to be a debate about which quarterbacks in the league are elite and which ones aren't. Thanks to Tony Gonzalez, the debate this offseason is probably going revolve around Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

In an interview with ESPN the Magazine, Gonzalez had this to say about his quarterback of the past five seasons, "Matt's an excellent quarterback, but he's not elite," Gonzalez said as he almost pinched together his thumb and index finger. "He's this close. He'll get there, but he has some learning to do."

Ryan might not be an elite quarterback but he's definitely being paid like one. The 28-year-old signed a five-year, $103.75 million extension in July that averages out to $20.75 million per year, second only to Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers.

Although Gonzalez doesn't think Ryan is elite, he did tell the Falcons official website that Ryan is "better than any other quarterback I've ever played with." That's kind of a back-handed compliment though when you consider Gonzalez has played with Elvis Grbac, Trent Green and Damon Huard.

It's not all bad news for Falcons fans though. The two most recent quarterbacks who had their eliteness called into question? Joe Flacco and Eli Manning. Things worked out for them.

Besides talking about Ryan, Gonzalez also touched on a few other topics during his interview. For instance, he was open to being traded before the Oct. 29 deadline after the Falcons fell apart in 2013. Atlanta was 2-5 at the point.

"You trade me to a team that needs me, that wants to make a serious run in the playoffs and the Super Bowl," Gonzalez said. "You get something in return for a guy who you know won't be here next year. And the season isn't going anywhere anyway. That's rational."

According to the ESPN story, Gonzalez was at a restaurant with his wife expecting to be traded and the two were waiting for a call from the Falcons. Gonzalez's phone never rang and he wasn't happy about not being traded.

Back in October, Gonzalez had said he'd 'listen' if Atlanta was interested in trading him.

It really made no sense for the Falcons to keep Gonzalez. Getting any draft pick for a guy who currently has no plans of playing in 2014 would have been a steal for a team that has a few holes to fill.

Maybe the Falcons kept Gonzalez though because they hope he'll play in 2014. The tight end is technically under contract for one more season and he recently told Ryan that if the team got hot in November 2014 he could maybe "come back for the last two months."

despite a few Atlanta fans clamoring the "season is not over...yet" and he should suffer with everybody else after signing his contract, there was no point in keeping an expiring contract. Falcons could use an extra fifth rounder this spring.

and whatever is said about Matt Ryan is fair game. all those excuses about your team go out the window when you miss the playoffs and take up nearly 20 percent of the salary cap.

Which makes more sense: Keep the GOAT receiving tight end around just in the hopes that something rubs off on your high-upside rookie or see if you can get a draft pick just to move a contract? Had he asked to be traded (knowing that he's not the type to demand it), they would have done it, but he just said he was open to it.

His contract is ridiculous (not that he will likely see the 4th and 5th years of it, at this rate), but are we saying that every top 10/15 qb is "elite"?

you run the ball there......even if you don't get it a punt backs them up enough where they got to go the whole field instead of half the field...

that sack...fumble....and the score that happened after that was all the Pats needed to swing the momentum..

and I'm more certain now than ever the Rams made the right choice with McVay and not waiting on Shanny ....

and now we'll likely get Matty MVP's QB coach as our Offensive Coordinator....LaFluer...who looks like he was the real star of that Atlanta offensive coaching staff...

That play right there was the game. The mic middle linebacker is on the line and he's NEVER on the line and Matt never saw him.

Freeman was put back there to block....

there was no reason to audible because they had a guy lined up to block that specific dude..

the problem was calling a pass there in the first place

the Falcons lost because of play calling....and defense..

neither of which are under Matt Ryan's authority.

yeah...no...no he's not the driver of anything....because he doesn't call his own plays...

and you need to figure out whether you want to put this blame on the entire team as you're saying here...or on Matt Ryan as you're also trying to say..

when it's a QBs fault.... it's his fault..... and in those situations...you're gonna have to show me some INTs....some missed passes and some poor ON FIELD decisions..

smh..

unlike you....I have a football acumen that rises above my own personal preferences in terms of MY team...

there are people that believe the Rams should have waited on Shanny and passed on McVay...

those people are wrong...and yesterday showed one of the reasons why (shanny got passed on by EVERY team that had a coaching vacancy this offseason except the last team with an opening)

although the Rams decisions have nothing to do really with Shanny calling a deep pass play on 3rd and 1 with the lead.... but I will address one thing...

the Rams have made plenty of mistakes over the last couple of years... I'd put extending Austin and the Goff trade in the category of mistakes currently....I'd also add the idea of gutting the team of linebackers and running what amounted to a 4-1-6 as a base defense a mistake...

but how Jeff Fisher was handled would not be a mistake in my book...not at all.

When Jeff Fisher was hired by the Rams, he was the biggest available name at the time..and the most sought after coach. He ended up having a #1 overall QB that got hurt and missed basically 2 seasons....

as the Rams headed towards relocation....keeping fisher around for the youngest team in the NFL having to deal with moving across the country was a prudent move. If you change coaches then move...you put the new coach at a disadvantage and you put your young roster in a position for a move with someone who they don't know...and who doesn't know them. The contract extension they signed him to ....wasn't really a contract extension at all... The Rams promised Fisher a certain number of years pay when they started formulating their move to LA, and paying him a 1 season buyout for his trouble was more than within reason..

either way... I'm liking where we stand as regardless of what adjustments we have to make because of the potential actual mistakes like the Goff deal....all those should be worked out by the time we move into the most elaborate and expensive stadium in the country (privately funded) in a couple of years..
