be it day or night
and i awake from dreams of bliss or horror
solely to attend to her needs

i dress her wounds
provide nourishment
after those who would claim love ravage
and even when she's ravenous
i remain loyal to the bitter end

now, when i was a child
she would comfort me
bringin me ice cream sundaes and chocolate candy
she would speak truth and make me cry
or uplift my spirit into flight

we would praise and amen in church
and after choir rehearsal we'd dance and flirt
she's always been there for me
