I was going through the archives and since I'm in a battle mood I was reading all the battles and I thought it would be nice to make a post on battling

(plus i saw posts of people asking for advice on this subject-like if they lost a battle or something)

so what are some good techniques to use?

what are similies and metaphors punchlines and wordplay?

does anyone have any insight to these things?

where we could teach people how to become a better "battler"

This works really well for me: just some advice


When you battle I think it sounds better when you don't rhyme the last word in the rhyme with another last word-well for every sentence

You can switch it up and rhyme the last word with the first word in the next sentence
it makes it seem more creative and makes it flow better
then you change the whole rhyme scheme

Example:

Ya'll don't know I bring heat to ya kitchen
smitten I'm dissin so cold wearing mittens

That's what it's called when you "brag" in your rhymes
like give yourself props

Example:

I'm the illest emcee ever so come test me
I made killer cam wear pink
I am the rap fueler, the schooler and I break emcees like rulers




I think this shouldn't be used too much in battling only because I think a battle sounds better with more direct dissing.

arrogance is always good in a battle. You don't want to ever seem hurt by the challenger. This ,however, is defense it can win games when you are messing with a novice. You won't find many around here so attack go at your opponent. Slip in bragging , taunts, get your Ric Falir on ,but get right back to the punches.

Direct hits to your opponents actual rhyme structure and dissing that are really good punches.

Especially on the internet-because people read it and begin to look for it-and if it's really true makes it worse for the opponent.

Like when you pinpoint on a word or sentence that your opponent used
and diss it

just my opinion but I think that similies are kinda wack

unless you think of a really original or funny one to use

but saying "you're as old as my granma" is wack

I think that too many similies make it sound simplistic too

and if you didn't know

Definition:
A simile is a comparison between two things.

It is signaled overtly; in English, a simile is expressed by the words like or as.

I tbink that you can compare things without using like or as

and it sounds better in battling

I think that reducing the use of similies looks to be more direct hitting

Punchline- if you familiar with comedians is the last part of the joke. The part that makes you laugh, say oohh shit or damn thats cold.

In a battle it can be funny ,vicious or clever
Vicious
Canibus- I'll hit you in your chest, so hard your shoulder will touch
Clever
Elzhi- Looking for me ,under a rock bush or a tree, I'll jump on your block, and stump you til my foot is asleep

Funny
Rza- you couldn't punch your way out of a wet paper bag , with scissors in your hands

this does not mean you have to dumb it down, but a punchline is not a punchline if no one understands.It's your job to make the reader or listener understand , just as much as it is to take out your opponent.
The average person will not go get an ecyclopedia to find out who Copernicus is.

Personally, i like both.

I mean to use both in a battle

like short bars

example:

I rhyme slow
Let emcees know
How I go
and throw
my foes

u know who is a great short bar battler: PG- he be wylin wit it lol

long bars are just like whole sentences used by most people

but I think it's cool to use both

I think that rhymes are really good when they use that non-chalant approach.

Tonka truck-i noticed you come off like really laid back-like effortless

kinda like what makes Jay-z hot.
because Jay-z never really had any lyrical complexity bur what makes him hot is his "laid back ness"

bars are ok meaning "/" but do take away

I think that just a space (return key) between bars is the best way
because we want to concentrate on content not grammar

and yeah-you gotta spell things properly
but yeah its ok to end things in A instead of R
and if you want a word to be pronounced differently so you spelled it differently to rhyme then put in parenthesis the word spelled correctly

i really don't know anything good to say but practice harder
because i never been in battle that was judge just alot of
add on dick riders listen to big pas nas redman m&m fiddy mob deep
and mix it all together and forge your own style but playing it smart with out being clever oh no-bob

sometime i don't use puch lines i flow off what they say and twist it to draw on there anger or i'll use the same words they use to see who came out with a better concept it's about mind games and don't contemplate your dilevry just let it splatter the screen like blood when chopping off a head stay in control if need be wait a day or 2 before responsing

learn your enemy and how they write how they attack it's war
and anything is fair in war mama jokes read they stuff see what there sensitive to and exploit it only a true king will over look his weakness and become stronger by flipping the game in his favor

i love to just joke around with people i'm having fun thats why i rule it's not to hurt anybody but to grow together

just like there is a lot of creativity that goes in to the Haymaker punchlines, you can make up for it with rhyme scheme, flow, onomatapia and aliteration. this is my favorite part.

Battlin is like boxing. Those Heymakers that knock out your opponent with one mighty swing is rare. The onomatapia,aliteration, rhyme schemes, simile and metaphors are the combos. Once you get that hard hit in go to work with the combos. Style and craetivity will go far.

Words that through their segments imitate sounds one can hear in the environment. e.g., whoosh, meow, clink, bong, boom, creak, cockadoodledoo, cheep, zoom, buzz, etc.

In a battle acronyms that are dissing the opponent I have used

and it helps me to think of words

but i used this one once:

"you contracted S.I.D.S.= Sntences Irrelevent Due to Structure"

What turns me on is a clean~crisp~intellectual battle -- A clever battle of wits & wisdom -- with a touch of street!

Everything counts -- SPELLING -- PUNCHLINES -- METAPHORS -- SIMILES -- GRAMMAR -- CADENCE, etc.

The crispness comes in with a snappy, braggadocious personna -- laced with witty -- *OH SHIT, NO HE / SHE DIDN'T* -- humor!

To me, sloppy~ness in spelling, grammar, punchlines, rhyme~scheme, cadence, etc. warrants demerits, points taken off the entire flow.

~PLUS~

It's not necessary -- (I guess) -- but if you can flow a battle "verbally" ((OUT LOUD))) -- and it rocks with rhythm & head nods -- extra bonus points are in order in my book -- :9

The reason I say ^this^ is cuz I've seen lyrics that LOOK tight/SOUND tight *written* -- (But they're kinda long in length) -- So if you try to flow it orally, it don't fit in ya mouf right -- *U can't SPIT it without squinching the words or tryna say em' real fast* -- (Don't ask me what "squinchin'" means, just use your imagination) -- *chuckles*


And if you drag yo nasty sweaty balls/nuts or dick juice on da flow -- I AIN'T READIN' IT!!! -- *ewwwwwwww* -- :P
