Knowing the truth in the words we speak, and the reasons why

Little brown girls and little brown boys
Now struggle less with the adversity life employs
Their mothers and fathers paving the way
For age old black girl pain
To turn into new age black girl fame
BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL

Each time we speak a name
From our history, we rejoice their gain
Those like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Gandhi
Who gave their lives so that next generations can be free
So that it’s now their own people that are envied
BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL

From sisters like Maya Angelou and Oprah Winfrey
Who speak the truth and touch us spiritually
They have done so much and proven they can
They inspire us all, whether African, Indian, Hispanic or Asian
All the while reinforcing
BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL

With our soft almond eyes and curled eyelashes
To our ebony hair and smooth brown skin – it all matches
From the different shades, each one as exotic
Covering our strong bodies, the way we move – so erotic
Watching us dance and sway – just hypnotic
BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL

Floating on waves in Caribbean waters
Or dancing to drums on African borders
Calming the mind in Indian temples
Smelling sweet aromas of spices and rose petals
So many cultures that have felt the same pain
Gone through the same adversity to now prosper and gain
Our beauty is not only in our mocha skin
But in the way we found freedom while staying true to our kin
By coming together to share wisdom and joy
Our children will gain life’s sacred knowledge we employ –
BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL – WE ARE BEAUTIFUL.
