742095, Y THE LAST MAN (Hulu, 2021)

If you haven't read it, get ready for an amazing ride. It's hands down one of the best comics I have ever read.

So far so good.

The casting is excellent. Yorick is the emotionally insecure asshole who occasionally busts a joke. 355, Ashley Romans, is perfect. Diane Lane is knocking it out the park as President Brown.
742106, I feel like the characterization of Yorick is solid BUT the women seem off.

I never got the impression from the book that the women were problematic or mean, or anything the like.

The show is giving (for me) very big "You didn't appreciate the men in your life and now they're gone." vibes.
742108, After a decade waiting and 3 epsiodes, I wished I liked it more

My main problems so far are the tone they went for, the issues I think the graphic novel had that I think they'd fix and especially Yorick.

It is not a bad TV show but by taking itself too seriously, it robs Yorick from being the witty, hopeless romantic , smart college drop out kid from the novel to an entitled , actually dumb, whiny loser that is hard to root for ( The fact that he thought Amp was swimming in that subway scene pissed me the hell off) but luckily the other characters are very well done which is probably why Yorick seems so...Weak in comparison. 355 exceeded my expectations as well as Pres Brown and they're teh reason I will continue watching.
742109, I think Yorick grows as it goes along, I felt like he did in the comic

742111, He does grow in the comic

Maybe his personality translates poorly on screen but the way I remember in the graphic novel he has a Peter Parker typa personality ( Which helps him navigate the horrors of his situation) but in this, dude is irritating to watch. His immaturity shouldn't be something that makes him unbearable. It's probably a me thing as I think there is too many shows that mishandle this " Hero's Journey" by making their protagonists hard to root for.
742117, as a fan of the comic I didnt love it the way I thought I would....

But its still solid. I do love the casting of Agent 355 though!
742133, I was a big fan of the comic and I am watching the show now...

It's cool. My only gripe is why is Yorick so dumb. You never got that from the comic. He can be obnoxious and jerky but never dumb. I hope it gets better.
742143, ^THIS^

742276, The Karma Police rendition was a BIT much lol

Mostly like how this is unfolding, and I like getting insight on Hero's journey that we didn't get in the comics. I do have the same complaint about Yorick being dumb (rather than just naive) but he seems to be smartening up little by little.
742304, The fact folks aren't talking about what should be an epic show
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Oct-13-21 11:55 AM
is telling me something. This should be event tv right?!?

742306, The way its constructed, its a slooooooow burn

742307, ehhh its 2021. Y The Last Man is nothing special these days.

742312, If it had dropped before or not so long after Walking Dead it would.
Posted by KnowOne, Thu Oct-14-21 08:25 AM
I think the masses are experiencing apocalypse fatigue. As a huge fan of the comic I love it so far though.
742338, wtf this shit is already cancelled

742341, The fuck???

I’m sure someone will pick it up, but this is a shame. This story is obviously a slow build and I think it will find its audience.
742347, RE: The fuck???

It is moving...SLOOOOOOOOOOW.

Really having a hard time figuring out what part of the story they kept in order.

You don't feel like the stakes are high for Yorick- you see the moving pieces, but they don't feel connected.

HERO is no where to be found...

Show needs new showrunners.
742359, Agreed.
Posted by spades, Tue Oct-19-21 10:23 AM
SLOW AS FUCK Especially considering it's core audience already knows the story.

We read the book a decade ago or more.

This isn't the way you do this.
742371, I agree it's slow, but I doubt comic readers are the core audience.
Posted by Backbone, Wed Oct-20-21 12:26 PM
Sucks that it's cancelled. I never read the comic (only heard of it) and thought the series so far was interesting enough, even if the pace was slow and I felt like few characters were worth rooting for.
742372, majority of the audience are "Handmaiden's Tale" viewers
Posted by Castro, Wed Oct-20-21 01:09 PM
742512, "Last" episode today.
Posted by Castro, Mon Nov-01-21 06:59 AM
Haven't watched for a couple of weeks.
742526, Now I get it. Orphan Black was their template.
