740363, Lupin (Omar Sy, NETFLIX, 2020)
Posted by Castro, Thu Jan-14-21 12:36 AM
Dope cat and mouse thriller set in France. The first part is five episodes and is on Netflix now.

Not the usual fare for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
740375, Finished the first half today.

I’m loving it.
The cast is great, especially the lead actor.

There were lots of times where he really resembled Idris Elba as Stringer Bell. I know
I’m not the only one who saw that.. lol

Can’t wait for the 2nd part to come out.
740376, Yeah, he had his Stringer Bell thing working

740380, Just finished..wow! (spoilers below)

The writing and directing is really great..this is my first time seeing Omar Sy in anything and I'm hearing he's a huge star in France

I watched in French w/English subtitles so I may watch again to see more of the acting subtleties since I had to read so much...

The dog, yo...I loved him so much! what a hilarious device to have to bark every time anyone said Pelligrini (although they missed 1 or 2...i was watching lol)

I was glad they had Assane off his game a couple times...no thief is perfect and he can't control every situation..the walls are closing in on him at this point, so it was a perfect mid-season cliffhanger

they do such a great job at creating tension and suspense! several times i realized i was on the edge of the couch, leaning in to the tv screen..at one point, i paused to run to the bathroom, and i found myself actually RUNNING down the hall as if the shit was gonna magically unpause while i was away LOL

great job at keeping the audience off balance around whether or not his father was guilty...several times i was like, ok he stole it..then nah he didn't lol

i knew the journalist wasn't gonna make it....i really loved her character and was glad she got to briefly get back in the action

seeing a French Black actor w/this kinda role and budget...just wow...i know Omar must be living the dream right now...

oh and the casting!!! the boy cast as young Assane...perfect. wow

i can't wait for part 2

740410, saw it last night, i am a fan now
Posted by agentzero, Mon Jan-18-21 05:26 AM
does anybody know when the new episodes are dropping?

740414, loved this. they need to drop part 2 asap
Posted by CherNic, Mon Jan-18-21 02:51 PM
And hopefully it's like 'part 2 is already filmed, we just need to release it' as opposed to 'production hasn't even started yet''

Unrelated/semi related, I'm still a lil salty that we won't get a season 2 of Queen Sono. It was renewed then reversed
740417, I think Queen Sono could come back...but I hope for a better storyline

740428, that cliff hanger!!!!
Posted by KnowOne, Wed Jan-20-21 12:31 PM
Im like wait thats the lst ep!?!?! Cant wait for second half.
740439, 100% no hate but this was definitely made for the international market
Posted by benny, Thu Jan-21-21 12:49 PM
it's not as corny as some of the other France-based Netflix stuff (eg Emily in Paris) but something about it felt a bit over-explainy, which makes sense since I assume no one outside of France (and Japan, lol) had any clue about Arsene Lupin before this show came out.

Still overall this was a nice breezy watch, Omar Sy plays the different facets of his character really well and I dug the way the action was blended in with the more cerebral sides to his quest. The actor playing him young was also cast perfectly.

Kinda liked that they did a 5-episode drop, it's a nice compromise between the binge-inducing 12ep drops and the week-to-week model.
740458, oh definitely...which was really smart of them

740463, yeah stuff like this, money heist, gangs of london, etc
Posted by Reeq, Fri Jan-22-21 08:26 PM
you gotta tone down your standard of realism to enjoy them.
740512, I really enjoyed this too

I didn't have sky-high expectations going in, but was intrigued to see a French production starring a person of color playing a role I only associated with an anime character. It was good! surprisingly so, even!

I liked everything about it, but what really struck me was the on-pointness of the younger/older casting pairs. young Assane is a really good match, but the Claires look like *the same person!* how'd they do that??

looking forward to part two.
740518, Netflix says pt 2 is coming this summer
Posted by CherNic, Thu Jan-28-21 02:01 PM
another 5 episodes already filmed
740519, Can someone explain something I *must* have stupidly missed?
Posted by dgonsh, Thu Jan-28-21 03:16 PM
Sy shows up to the auction in full view. The cops know the buyer from his wikipedia page or whatever. But then they spend 4 episodes concocting awful police sketches. The detective guy see's Sy's alter-ego's name is a Lupin anagram right away. Why didnt he immediately know Sy was the "thief" they were looking for? I was so lost on that plot point the whole series and never figured it out.
740520, he supposedly looks different in his ‘disguises’.
Posted by Reeq, Thu Jan-28-21 07:22 PM
that was one of the sillier parts about this.

big ass black dude in france with prominent facial features and nobody ever put 2 + 2 together.

you just gotta go along with it lol.
740522, Yup. The plot falls apart under the tiniest bit of scrutiny...
Posted by Backbone, Fri Jan-29-21 06:30 AM
But the cast is great, production values are slick and pacing is quick, so it's easy to ignore/overlook.

All in all I'm looking forward to the last two episodes and hope to see Omar Sy in more blockbuster stuff because he's great in this kind of role.
740525, BAHAHA guess I missed that. Some real Clark Kent puts on glasses stuff
Posted by dgonsh, Fri Jan-29-21 12:12 PM
740526, That is the fun part of it.....
Posted by Castro, Fri Jan-29-21 12:55 PM
I kept waiting for someone to say, "Mugfucka you Shaq!" in French LMAO.

But they play it straight and that gives Omar Sy's character this superheroic aura.
741546, when he had the ole man mustache i almost yelled it out (but my

but i was THINKING it!

740529, its really more of a commentary on racist French culture

he speaks directly to this in the first episode

that to most people, Black people are invisible

rain and she don't recognize him as her driver... when assane is like 'wtf??', his pops is like, *they* don't SEE us.

so even as the disguises got sillier, i kept that in my mind as subtext throughout the whole show.

his Blackness was a big part of his disguise in France. (i don't know how sociopolitically accurate that is. but living in the US, one's Blackness is a big ass, neon, see it from space sign saying HE DID IT!!! regardless of WHAT the crime was and what the description of the perp was).

for omar sy to be looking like he a solid 6'6" 250 and constantly walking right by mfers did have me a tad side-eyed in the middle, and then i chalked it up to a running gag and just agreed to suspend my disbelief for the remainder.
