739670, I used to dismiss the whole genre, too

but after spending way too much time scrolling through the same ol' stuff in Netflix, I decided to expand my horizons a bit.

in the past few months, I've watched several:

Suspiria (the original) - excellent as a sight/sound experience, but not very scary.

Wrong Turn, You're Next and Don't Breathe - similar in their grounded style. no real supernatural elements to struggle to accept. Don't Breathe was the best.

An American Werewolf in London - cool seeing cutting-edge practical effects in the pre-CG era. but the comedy elements fell flat for me.

The Invitation - I recommend this, although it's more suspense/thriller. unsettling and memorable, and the mostly unrecognizable cast (to me, at least) helped with immersion.
