739526, BETTER THAN US (Netflix, 2019)

Imagine EX-Machina combined with Mrs. Doubtfire set in a John Woo thriller....with Russian actors.

It sounds like a mishmash, but its smart, filmed very well (the editing at times is choppy but that may be because it was adapted for Netflix's US audience).

The story centers around a robot that is in violation of Asimov's three laws but the world that this story exists in is slick, minimalist William Gibson inspired cyberpunk territory, where beatdown used Buick automobiles can coexist with wrist embedded holographic cellphones.

There are layers to the story, betrayal, the android at the center of the story, Arisa, is consistent in her actions (unlike the improbably batshit crazy androids in Raised by Wolves). There is sex, mobile robot repairmen, the protagonist, Georgy Safronov (Kirill Käro, who is a dead ringer for Hugh Laurie's down on his luck, up on his pills Dr. Gregory House.) as the guy who just wants his family back, the evil corporation with the amazing skyscraper stopping at nothing to cover its crimes, and nobody does John McClane (Die Hard) better than stubble faced Kirill Polukhin as a dogged Russian detective....

Highly recommended.
