IMO Erivo's actually playing Holly in a muted way. From a real-world standpoint, she's a borderline superhero in the Hodges trilogy (Mr Mercedes). So from my standpoint, she's actually showing significant restraint, rather than going all Oscar(Emmy?) Bait with Holly's "spectrum" powers, so to speak.
But I could also be biased, being so happy for a solid translation that I'm accepting a mediocre performance.
