I haven't read the book and this has me tempted although we'll see how things go as far as the ending

I originally thought, coming in cold, it was going to be something more parallel universe-y or something else so when it was basically 'the boogie man' I was just a little let down.

I will say that for me Erivo is the weak link in the cast just because it feels like ACTING to me where Mendelson is so understated. It's really hard to pull off that kind of character and make them seem real and it's not for lack of trying on Erivo's part but she's unfortunately the weakest link for me (well her and Asshole Cop).

I'm a little cautious as things begin make themselves clear if they'll be able to sustain the quality and palpable dread of the initial episodes but even if not at least we'll have those. They were basically the best episodes of True Detective we've gotten since that show's first season.
