i'm not disagreeing with you about there being many very funny shows, but veep was also on hbo. the rules are different on cable, and especially on premium channels and streaming. network tv still exists, and it plays it safe almost exclusively. i really see movies as akin to that because they have to have enough wide appeal to make a profit at the box office. in the last decade, you've had the rise of outrage culture and commercial thinkpieces and a sincere social awakening. if we look back at the history of movie comedies through modern eyes, they are almost all problematic, some deeply. studios now don't want the hassle. even something like that deplorables movie blumhouse produced and didn't release. people can't take a joke now. i love comedies because they make us examine and laugh at ourselves, including our preconceptions. i hope the movie studios can figure something out.
