736226, Raising Dion (season 1, Netflix)
Posted by Original Juice, Sun Oct-06-19 05:11 PM
Anyone watching?

I think it's damn good for what it is.

Based on the comic book by Liu.

Executive produced by and co-starring Michael B. Jordan as the dead father.

I'm about halfway through, and i'm hooked.
736274, I'm going to binge this tomorrow

I only realized the other day that it's from that short film made back in '15. Back then I thought it was a GREAT premise for a movie or show, but assumed it was just a one-shot short that was done to look sort of like a movie trailer.

Can't wait to dig into this one.
736276, I'm a couple of episodes in

Yes, although she's very good looking, she's actually awesome in this.

The writing is a little iffy in parts, one particular twist seems fairly obvious (and I hope I'm wrong about it), and I would be very surprised if this got a second season (I don't know if the storyline ends with season 1 or not), but this is pretty entertaining.
736358, my mom and I LOVED it!

We couldn't get over how ADOWABUL lil Dion was and how much his mom Nicole looked like Alicia Keys lol

Loved every character, how the story grew, the character development...

I'll stop here in case I spoil anything.

It has it’s weak/bad acting/writing moments and I don’t know if I’d watch a second season, but still cool to see a young Black kid with superpowers
736485, some thoughts (just finished the season) *some spoilers*
Posted by wrecknoble, Mon Oct-28-19 03:32 PM
-the kid that plays Dion isn't a great actor. he had some extremely cringey moments but i got past them by reminding myself that he's still a child lol - he also had some great moments so they kind of balanced out

-loved how they incorporated the talk about racism between Nicole and Dion when he had to deal with the asshole teacher. also loved that it was brought up again by Dion to the invisible woman while they walked through the school. showed that it had an impact on him.

-also loved how they developed Esperanza as someone Dion was embarrassed to be associated with to realizing she was truly his best friend. the scene where he made her levitate and then had to realize that it was against her wishes was great.

-the above 2 points illustrate that there are a lot of good lessons here for kids, and hopefully a lot of kids watch the show!

-the twist about the main villain was kinda wack to me, but the character WAS getting increasingly annoying for misreading signs. i also thought it was extremely weird the way he was falling for Nicole throughout the season. i kind of wish they didn't just automatically morph him into the villain but rather let him learn and grow as a person as well. i guess there really are jerks like that in real life though so it made sense?

overall, decent show for me to watch while doing laundry. glad that Netflix made this and we need way more shows like this, that cast black and brown people as leads.

appreciate the recommendation to the OP!

736559, finished it. It was promising on paper, but just ok in execution.

*SPOILERS*

-The boy was *okay*. I would have liked a kid that was a little more...something. Someone who you want to see develop into a powerful superhero. This kid was just kind of eh.

-The twist with the villain? I saw it coming from about episode 3. It was pretty weak how he went from caring friend of the family to bad guy.

Overall I enjoyed it. I'd be surprised if it got a second season.
736834, The bad guy twist worked for me

I also thought the Dion kid was pretty consistently in character, unless he’s just playing himself. Would be hilarious to see him in an interview and he turns out to have a heavy British accent or something. The relationship between him and Esperanza seemed real. I felt like him and the kid who got off Scott free for bullying him got buddy buddy too fast. They needed to develop that more.

Kinda hope he gets a better costume for Season Two. LOL

Guess they’ll have to explain how the whole Lightning Man thing works next season

Peace,
