Yes this is for real:

I have a lot of thoughts. None of them good.

734709, Sonic looks so bad Posted by hardware, Tue Apr-30-19 09:01 AM
like the Pokemon still have appealing designs, just rendered realistically
this redesign has no appeal whatsoever. even if he wasn't rendered realistically, the proportions go against appealing character design
i'm interested in see Jim Carrey cause that at least looks entertaining

734711, I'm kinda over zany Jim Carrey Posted by bwood, Tue Apr-30-19 09:16 AM
I grew up with that shit in the 90s. I researched The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Cable Guy recently. His shtick get annoying very quickly.

Meant to say rewatched. Fucking autocorrect

I'm old as shit, apparently.

Shit looks like ass to me too.
I was a huge Pokemon in 7th and 8th grade.

734735, the Pokemon still look like pokemon Posted by hardware, Tue Apr-30-19 04:46 PM
still shaped like pokemon
Sonic looks like a guy in a horrible suit from a local amusement park
Unclothed cartoon characters are also designed in a way that they don't feel naked
This Sonic is designed in a way that looks and feels glaringly naked.
|
734752, As someone unfamiliar with both... Posted by Frank Longo, Wed May-01-19 09:42 AM
... they both just look like weird cartoon animals to me. I can tell there's more money behind the Pokemon movie, but since I never really had any deep affinity for Sonic the Hedgehog, all of the outrage over his design was a bit of a shrug to me. Seemed like just another kids movie character. But again, I'm an old person on these subjects.
Also the Sonic movie doesn't come out for another half a year, so with all the people complaining, I wouldn't be surprised if they touched up the CGI anyway. Wouldn't be the first movie to release a trailer and change the effects after.

734827, Part of it is how antiquated the idea is Posted by hardware, Mon May-06-19 12:39 PM
just like we can have goofy comic book costumes instead of black leather suits
its not 2001. It just reads as out of touch after getting to a point in hollywood where you can actually use the designs of the people who got paid to design multi-million dollar characters instead of a group of people that don't know why giant eyes and gloved hands are less creepy than tiny man hands and eyes so small you have to guess what the character is thinking.
No kid is gonna go for that toy.
also kids are WAY more discerning about this stuff as i guess we've demonstrated in this post. I'm pretty sure this is what the studio thought when they redesigned it.
The idea that you can just give kids anything kinda goes against the fact that character design is a huge part of getting a degree in animation and why some characters make so much more money. Teen Titans GO made way more money than Teen Titans. Paw Patrol runs laps around PJ Masks.

734722, RE: If this was in a vault since 1995 would you be able to tell? Posted by bwood, Tue Apr-30-19 12:06 PM
Honestly no.
|
734725, Okay, the Genesis line was pretty good. Posted by stylez dainty, Tue Apr-30-19 12:48 PM
And yes, this looks so bad. The character design is so unpleasant to look at. I used to draw a lot of Sonic pictures in middle school, and it's three circles. Head, body, leg blur. This current design is this weird wedge shape that forces your eyes down to his crotch, and the penis you can't see is almost more disturbing than one you could.
|
734741, I think kids are going to eat it up Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Tue Apr-30-19 07:16 PM
But I kinda feel for the parents who are going to be forced to sit with their kids.
As far as the character, Sonic, I dunno. I thought the hair was well done and at least his face looked like Sonic's from the game. But this Sonic clearly isn't the Sonic from the game. Maybe if this movie was an animated one, the could have stuck with the original design.

734748, can we get a new mortal kombat movie? Posted by Madvillain 626, Wed May-01-19 09:13 AM
since we goin all in on the video game shit apparently
the streets need that Metal Gear Solid movie directed by the Russos
|
734754, the Skull Island guy seems to have hemmed that project up Posted by Nodima, Wed May-01-19 10:09 AM
If it were to ever happen, anyway. His name's been tagged to it since before that movie came out. I remember seeing Oscar Isaac say he wanted to play Snake during the Triple Frontier press tour so maybe the juice is finally coming together for MGS, but I also wonder how hard it is to work with Konami these days considering they're almost entirely out on video games and entirely in on gambling.

734761, short answer: yes Posted by Selah, Wed May-01-19 02:26 PM
1. check the list below, and note these aren't all nostalgia games. smash bros alone counts for a pretty high profile
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls066027613/?sort=list_order,desc&st_dt=&mode=detail&page=1
2. anecdotally, my 6y/o LOVES sonic and as a result, if you go to a toy section/store there are tons of new sonic toys to tie into the games

734767, My 4 year old loves Sonic. I have to play the first two stages of wackass Posted by Cold Truth, Thu May-02-19 12:43 AM
Sonic Generations for a good hour 2-3 times a month, which accounts for roughly 70% of all my console gaming time.
I'm sure I'll be there to slog through this godawful trainwreck in opening weekend.

734828, The last Sonic game (2018) sold 234,032 in the first week Posted by hardware, Mon May-06-19 12:42 PM

Not sure who wanted a live action Dora or Sonic, but whomever these people are can kindly walk off the face of the planet

734788, I guess the trailer was a beta test Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Fri May-03-19 06:53 AM
I gotta give them props for working to make the best movie possible but shouldn't the studio have workshopped the design MUCH earlier?

Sonic’s live-action design upset the entire internet, so the studio is changing it
Changes are coming
By Julia Alexander May 2, 2019, 6:34pm EDT
Most people recoiled at the sight of a disturbing, lanky CGI version of Sonic the Hedgehog when Paramount released its first trailer for the upcoming live-action film — and the studio has listened.
Director Jeff Fowler tweeted today about the backlash, assuring distressed fans everywhere that the criticism was heard loud and clear. Fowler confirmed that changes were coming to the design of Sonic’s character. “You aren’t happy with the design & you want changes,” Fowler tweeted. “It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be.”
Jeff Fowler @fowltown Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear... you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be... #sonicmovie #gottafixfast 🔧✌️
Since the trailer reveal, numerous fan edits have made the rounds on Twitter, Tumblr, and Reddit, with the drawings honing in on various horrifying aspects of Sonic’s newfound body. The lengthy, human-looking legs? Nope. The mouth full of human teeth? Double nope. Even the original Sonic the Hedgehog character designer added his thoughts to the conversation on Twitter.
“So far, various Sonics have appeared,” Naoto Ohsima tweeted. “I loved all Sonics. I saw a trailer of Sonic’s movie. I was expecting adults to have fun too. I am worried.” Even Ohsima knows that the intense reaction to Sonic’s redesign comes from a place of adoration for the character.
Naoto Ohshima @NaotoOhshima 今まで色々なソニックが現れたが全てを好きでいたい。私はソニック映画のトレーラーを観た。大人も楽しめるものを期待していたが心配です。 So far, various Sonics have appeared. I loved all Sonics. I saw a trailer of Sonic's movie. I was expecting adults to have fun too. I am worried.
It doesn’t help that Sonic’s new design arrives just as Warner Bros. is receiving praise for the adorable iteration of The Pokémon Company’s beloved character, Pikachu, in Detective Pikachu. Hopefully, a new design for Sonic is just around the corner — and will involve less teeth. Fowler didn’t say whether the decision to change the entire look of the character, which isn’t likely an easy task, will delay the film’s release.
Sonic the Hedgehog is currently scheduled to hit theaters on November 8th.

734792, people have hated the design since the teaser Posted by RobOne4, Fri May-03-19 10:20 AM
when they revealed how sonic looked in the teaser everyone hated it. They didnt make one change. I dont know why they are doing it now. Isnt this what focus groups are for? Its crazy to me that this went through several levels of people as an okay design for sonic. I could care less about the franchise and the movie. But this was just stupid from the get go.
|
734793, Focus groups aren't fans, though. Posted by Frank Longo, Fri May-03-19 10:58 AM
I bet if they focus group tested this with kids, kids probably thought the shit was fine. Parents probably thought it was mostly fine too. Focus groups are rarely what one would call "discerning" audiences. They probably didn't anticipate full-blown memeification, which takes the movie to a whole new level, to the point where it could affect what even the casual viewer thinks.
On one hand, I'm glad they're doing this to try to save the project... on the other hand, giving fans this much control is a losing game for any project. They won't be happy no matter what. (That and this is gonna suck gigantic balls for the animation department.)
|
734794, RE: Focus groups aren't fans, though. Posted by RobOne4, Fri May-03-19 11:19 AM
all the kids i talked to hated it. It was the talk of our little league practice. My son brought it up and that was it. They all thought it looked terrible. Then one kid said why would they make a Sonic movie and not make Sonic look like Sonic. These are 9 and 10 year olds.

he didn't look cartoony at all in the first one. that was what the whole issue was. lol.

736669, Better Sonic render, much better trailer cut Posted by spenzalii, Tue Nov-12-19 01:13 PM
I think even with the original design this trailer would have got a lot less backlash than the first one. This feels passable. Still is gonna suck, but...

Three day weekend for the win.

738022, This is literally the first successful video game adaptation Posted by Sofian_Hadi, Mon Feb-17-20 01:29 PM
When i first saw the trailer i didnt think this would become the best reviewed and biggest opening video game movie. Props to them for listening to the fans and changing his appearance.
|
738023, I think the Vikander Tomb Raider got unfairly passed over Posted by Nodima, Mon Feb-17-20 03:18 PM
It's a basic action movie but she sells it, and the nods they make towards the game tend to be more in how scenarios play out than straight forward fan service (including a fairly clever stealth sequence that's almost shot like it's a video game camera) so you don't even need to be a fan of the property to get into it, really.
I think the sequel has a ton of potential with a director upgrade, that first movie laid a really solid foundation.

738037, this was a lot of fun Posted by pretentious username, Tue Feb-18-20 07:00 PM
good mix of families and people my age in the theater. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Carrey's funniest role in like 20 years. He was an absolute goofball and me and my friend were dying at his lines.
|
738042, My kid loved it Posted by BigWorm, Wed Feb-19-20 04:38 AM
It didn't put me to sleep, so there's that.
And it was nice to see Jim Carrey in full Ace Ventura mode again.
Not a painful kid's movie to see. Nowhere near Pixar quality, and mostly formulaic, but you could do worse.
|
738044, My little 4-year old cousin couldn't stop being Sonic when the joint... Posted by Creole, Wed Feb-19-20 01:52 PM
ended. I took him to get pizza afterwards. The server handed him some crayons. Dude took out the blue one and started coloring his face because he wants to be Sonic. LOL
Anyway, the movie was entertaining and kept his interest despite what my guy thought was a slow, boring start.
|
738069, I thought it was pretty BLAH Posted by handle, Mon Feb-24-20 01:31 PM
To be fair I'm a grown ass man who was just super bored and had a free ticket.
For adults I didn't find it very funny or engaging - it was "eh."
But after the first 15 minutes I think kids (11 and under?) would love it. The first 15 minutes are pretty heavy on backstory but once things start happening it's fine.
I think the jokes and action would be great for the kids.
I kind of think there should have been 1 more Robotnik vs. Sonic fight somewhere in there too - one with lower stakes and more whimsy than the final fight.
I just didn't have it in me to go see Parasite or The Assisstant or 1917.
|
738072, most unrealistic movie I've ever seen Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Feb-24-20 04:37 PM
So let me get this straight:
James Marsden is your leading man.
And at no point, did a bigger, better, or just plan badder man snatch his hot ass wife/girlfriend?
FOH. Shit is fugazi.
I'm all for suspension of disbelief, but you have to give me something to work with.
|
738624, i loved this lol. Posted by Reeq, Sun May-03-20 01:54 AM
i dont really watch any kids movies so maybe my tolerance is low because i dont have a lot to compare it to. but i enjoyed this a bunch.
