It's kind of sad that in the 21st Century 'we' are still having to prove this to anyone.

I think what I find more touching about this 'new' recent wave of Black indies (Ava's romances, Moonlight, Beale St., this movie, Sorry to Bother You, and others) is the emphasis on the ordinary, unremarkable tenderness and fullness of the characters. They have moments of grandness and power like many Black indies show their characters as. But also quiet, tender moments of quiet and bonding with one another with their mere presence.

But in the same light, it's odd that a movie showing two Black men having what seems to be healthy, normal platonic relationships is in some way provocative. Like you're getting at, 'Black love,' in all its forms stuns some non-Black folks.
