735032, my mom went into labour with me the night of cherobyl

watching this show has been a trip. absolutely harrowing. the choice to cast all brits is interesting but it works when you just accept it. they obviously wanted the viewer to focus on the visuals and sounds rather than reading subtitles. Ep 3 was gut wrenching.
735043, I was thinking the same thing.....

It seemed weird at first but works for the better I think.
735171, it was made by sky in the UK

I was like "A British Gorbachev? The fuck?"

But then I realized that worked better than an American one

735044, I'm taking in the show and the podcast.
Posted by JFrost1117, Wed May-22-19 08:26 AM
Loving both, so far. They said they went with British/Western European actors instead of having people using Russian accents because it can get cartoony. Other than that, this shit is crazy.

“I think we should evacu—“
“Nah bruh, chill out.”
“But it’s really b—“
“HEY! Be fuckin cool about this.”
735166, What Podcast?

735066, the miner dude cracks me up
Posted by HecticHavoc, Thu May-23-19 09:48 AM
when the soldier said 'you cant talk to us like that!'
and he stares at him cold blooded "SHUT THE FUCK UP"

he had another confrontation a bit later too that made me laugh

this show needs that brief comedic relief bc the people dying of radiation is brutal to see.
735067, he's great but IRL KGB would have thrown him in a dungeon
Posted by j., Thu May-23-19 10:43 AM
for mouthing off like that

Speaking of KGB, who made the call to have the physicist rounded up?
Boris said he'd take care of it but I have a feeling it could be him

So far this is looking like a cult classic
I don't know, "psychological radiation thriller" genre or something?
I say that to say HBO has got another one (c)

735186, the podcast mentions the power miners had in the Soviet Union tho
Posted by Amritsar, Mon Jun-10-19 11:16 AM
because there was so few member of their workforce willing to be a miner

Soviets needed that coal
735095, this is so good, and 5 eps is perfect length IMO

I vaguely remember some of the incident from when I was a kid, but it’s morbidly fascinating to revisit it all
735111, The show is so well-made and handles the tough stuff
Posted by natenate101, Tue May-28-19 01:29 PM
with honesty. It's kept me riveted throughout and the roof scene this last ep had me nervous for all those workers. So many people gave their lives to stem the tide as much as possible. To think it wasn't voluntary makes it even more bittersweet.
735113, the sound for that roof scene really drove home the tension!

735144, What a sad, yet engrossing journey this show was
Posted by natenate101, Tue Jun-04-19 01:49 AM
I can't say enough about how well made this show ended up being. Acting and casting was spot on, and each episode had great moments and tension. I'm going to miss watching this and listening to the follow-up podcast each week.
735145, Incredible show.

BRUH

everything about this was perfect

should clean up come awards season
735149, I really like the way this was done

Craig Mazin did an incredible job of being patient and doing this the right way. You could tell this was a labor of love, told so well. The decision making process in terms of what they kept and what they cut is really really well done. Instead of telling a story of 100 scientists forming an opinion being drilled down to create 1 character who embodies the entire perspective.

The choice to use English instead of bad Russian accents was an excellent one. It allowed us to focus on storytelling and details.

The entire situation is really interesting and the dynamics of communism woven into the entire thing has been really great. How the dynamics of this system helped to create, and uniquely fix this problem as well.

Dope show, the first time they show you that core firing was so effing scary.

Dope show

Yeah I snickered at the very beginning like 'why's everyone British?' but now I completely agree with you.
735150, man. that finale was fucking PERFECT
Posted by HecticHavoc, Tue Jun-04-19 02:31 PM
i absolutely love how they finally revealed the build up to the opening scene in episode 1. what a colossal failure by comrade whatshisname who was running the test.

just a truly excellent series. one of my all timers.
735155, the Podcast is really good too!!! It has a lot of...
Posted by KnowOne, Wed Jun-05-19 08:59 AM
additional crazy true stories that the director wanted to include in the show but was unable to for various reasons.
735164, Fantastic schow
Posted by Eric B Is Prez, Thu Jun-06-19 01:06 PM
I wish it was more than a miniseries, but obviously there are limits to how long of a story this should be. Everything is spot-on, and it's one of the more quietly terrifying things I've ever seen.

I keep telling people they should watch it and they're all like "yeesh. why would I want to watch a show about Chernobyl?" :)
735185, i like the use of ambient noise
Posted by Amritsar, Mon Jun-10-19 11:14 AM
the radioactive meter thingy that the BioRobots wore and beeped as they got closer to the edge?

Edge of your seat stuff
735222, maaaan, this was told Soooooo well.....
Posted by Voodoochilde, Sun Jun-16-19 08:58 AM
this was executed to a T imo. start to finish.
SO well done...HOW you tell a story can make ALL of the difference, and they told this one with haunting subtle but powerful perfection. (take note other shows: HOW a story/plot unfolds is JUST as important ...if not MORE important...as the story/plot itself)
In the wrong hands, this one could have swung too much one way or swayed too much the other....but here they struck JUST the right balance and walked that taught line all the way through. Not to mention that the acting/casting was stellar too.

735263, Just finished it..geez this was amazing
