SPOILER WARNINGS

The only two minor problems I had were 1) the Snells surviving that shoot out the Mexican clan put on them and 2) Rachel happening to get a dose of the bad H. Those minor issues aside, that was stellar television. Obviously the show owes a ton to Breaking Bad, but the show so far ranks up there in terms of premier television. Laura Linney did a great job this season with her character.

I do wonder how many more seasons this can go on for though.

It was interesting to see the women damn-near move the story forward this year. From Helen, to Ruth, to Charlotte (who...I wouldnt trust to hold her breath) to Old Lady Snell (whats her name?). I felt like Agent Petty (lol) was kinda spinning his wheels and they had his character trying too hard to be unlikable, so that was the only good thing Ruths dad this year...other than getting killed. Like you, I dont see it going too much longer though.

believing they all survived the cartel’s spray is a leap.
I’m no expert, but fire destroyed all evidence of that poppy field?

Charlene is terrifying

That aside still excellent TV. I put in work binge watching it

I literally expect Charlene to start pulling her skin off everytime they show her...like.."here it comes...she's about to start pulling it off now! TOLD YOU!!!" But it never happens.

But yeah...they lit that car up, and she didnt have not na'an scratch? Come on man..

the snells and their driver surviving that ambush.. but just like you, a minor gripe.
Laura Linney just crushing it.
and I'm also wondering if this could go on because as good as it is, it feels like a 3 season show.

The Rachel OD didn't bother me at all though. it's not an unreasonable stretch that she would get some of the spiked dope

I like it. It picks up right where the first lets off.

What I both appreciate and find frustrating with the show is Jason Bateman's character. So far at least. You compare it to a show like Breaking Bad, about this low key narcissist teacher becoming a drug lord, and he's always trying to think a few steps ahead, even when characters and situations catch him off guard.

But Bateman's character is all about thinking on the spot and talking his way out of a situation, with almost foresight. His whole position is to put out fire after fire without really thinking about all the shit that's coming to a boil.

So it's exciting to see him constantly thinking on his toes and slithering out of threatening situations, but unless there is a huge twist and character development on the way, the character really doesn't anticipate or do anything to prepare or guard himself from the many people out to totally screw his plans.

And nobody spoil it, but I just know those mf-ing kids are going to cause more problems with that money they skimmed.

I do like that, despite the adultery stuff in the first season, Laura Linney's character is a WAY better, stronger female lead than the wife in Breaking Bad.

Overall, the best drama/thriller show I'm watching right now. If I didn't have kids I'd have binged the whole season on Sunday.
731525, Yeah...holla back....lol....but regarding Bateman
Posted by tully_blanchard, Tue Sep-04-18 09:54 AM
That was my one complaint about last year, that no matter what, he always won, ya know? He'd throw an off the cuff idea out, get people to believe it, then figure out how to make it work.

731536, His character is jive way too Zen about the shit he's in.
Posted by WarriorPoet415, Tue Sep-04-18 12:00 PM
This dude like never freaks out. Which in a way is kinda gangsta, but he is really way to zen about some shit.

I finished season two and when he confronts a certain someone about their actions in season 1 on the dock, he's way too trusting and accepting of her response.

It's sorta like House of Cards to me, in that around season 3, you wonder how the Underwoods just kept winning and winning with no major losses. Same thing is happening here. Like they are relatively chill.

Yeah this is still a great show.

I hope they know when to quit though.

I could give this 3-5 seasons tops. If they introduce a new villain they could probably wrap in 4 seasons.

Again I really like how the protagonists aren't exactly power hungry masterminds. They are just great at reacting to the moment and just barely avoiding disasters. They actually want to get out of the life, but they're stuck simply because they're so good at being crooks. At the same time, while they are fixing one fire, several more are being started behind their back. That's way more realistic than Breaking Bad, where it was way more straightforward.

Jason Bateman and Laura Linney should get some sort of nomination for this.
731923, I feel like there is a lot left
Posted by ToeJam, Sat Sep-29-18 07:43 PM
The Family is just now starting to embrace their roll. They are going g to become kingpins. I see them having big story arcs, especially the kids. And man I didn't even realize I was on the last episode. Tore thru this and I usually take a long time with series.
731540, Yep, finished yesterday. Best drama show going right now imo
Posted by calminvasion, Tue Sep-04-18 12:57 PM
very good. Labor day weekend is a great time to drop a bingable show.

*Spoilers*

I agree on the nitpicks, especially on the shootout, and to a lesser degree the total evidence destroying impact of the fire.

You just knew Charlene was one step ahead of him. And he know that all along, knifing her in the woods, com'n on fam.

I do think Laura Linney is the MVP of the show.

Only complaint, the finale was a bit of a let down, the intensity really waned in the last episode.

Also think, if they stretch it beyond 3 years, it will absolutely fall off. Next season should be the final season.
731542, **spoilers again**
Posted by tully_blanchard, Tue Sep-04-18 01:36 PM

The ending to me was kinda like the punchline to a joke that you knew was coming, but didn't know where it was gonna come from.

We knew they couldnt leave, but who knew the final word would come from his wife. She a damn boss fam...and he's recognizing now that she's his worst enemy. That's why he told Charlotte in the finale "if you still wanna leave this family, I won't stop you".

Thought the cartel, the FBI or even the KC Mafia was gonna keep him there? Little by little his enemies ('cept for KC yet) were taken down...only to make (dammit why cant I think of his wifes name!!!??) her more greedy. That shit was hard dude...all the while he thought he was the one in control, only to realize it's
"wifes name". That shit was demoralizing..

Both their wives run their shit. One down, Is that how Marty eventually goes down too?
732565, Who's your REAL enemy?
Posted by Calico, Sun Nov-11-18 06:46 AM
It's was the Snell's problem... Same for the Langmore's, and the Byrde's.... Internal conflict causes more problems, and that's because they CAN'T be transparent like they wanna be with each other.... Everyone has different objectives and ways to achieve them....

I don't think Wendy is his enemy, but I do think they need to really work together to survive and there may not ever be a good time to run.... Marty's plan was gonna fail off the daughter alone.....

I also agree they need to get that baby back.... That was one of the lowest things I've seen him do.... I know aMarty felt like he didn't have a choice but....ugh
731577, this shit was fire...

season 3 will be interesting but i agree that the show shouldn't last too much longer...as i was watching i legit thought it was going to end this season...i hadn't read up on their plans
731642, quite a show for strong women

Wendy
Ruth
Darlene
Helen

Not too much to say that hasn't been said. It was quite a season.

I'm kind of glad i didn't notice this until the end of the season, but Ruth's dad looks like evil Gomer Pyle

So, he tells the KC Mob that his team will get hired, and to let him DO HIS FUCKING JOB... (btw i loved when he was like "what is this guy gonna do? you gonna have him hit me? what the fuck are you doing over there?")

but why did they blow up his offices? that seems like a... finality more than a "you better hire us" message

Yeah i loved that too. His ability to talk his way out of dangerous situations is pretty impressive. was thinking to season 1 to that great scene where he first met the Langmores and basically dared them to kill him.

>but why did they blow up his offices? that seems like a...
>finality more than a "you better hire us" message

I just took it as a warning to know his place. They knew he wasn't there. Marty bested them in their exchange, they know they need him because if they kill him, they get nothing.. but they want it to be known they WILL kill Marty and his people if need be.
731732, yup.

my favorite parts in this show are the REALLY tense scenes you don't think hes going to get out of and he talks his way out. and its never a thing where it isn't believable. absolute master class.

yeah, this is the plausible route. fuckin mob, man. 'well you better get started on hiring all of us, but find a new office bc i am blowing yours up.'
731918, Season 3 is gonna be Kansas City Mob vs. Mexican Cartel
Posted by nipsey, Sat Sep-29-18 01:48 PM
and I am here for it.

As good as Laura Linney has been, Julia Garner (Ruth) should get some Emmy consideration. She has been stellar since the beginning. She's really, really good.

I love the show, but another nitpick I would add to the list is, why didn't the cartel just take Cade somewhere and make him disappear? If the plan was to give him money to leave town and that's what Ruth thought they would do, why gun him down in the road? Wendy should have told Helen that after Cade gets the money, kill him, take his body somewhere so it would never be found.

Ruth thinks her Dad took the money and run and no suspicions arise. Now, she's gonna be looking at Marty sideways.
731921, like all the women are good on this show

i too am all for it, and agree with what you said. Another would be, 3 cartel hitmen with AUTOMATIC WEAPONS within 20 yards of a vehicle cant even shoot anyone in the car, except obviously Snell in a safe spot.
731925, Yeah Ruth as absolutely killing it

I'm trying to come up with a good answer/reason for this and I cant. I feel like there is one but maybe not lol
731926, Garner was killing it this season and I noticed.
Posted by Rjcc, Sun Sep-30-18 01:25 PM
as far as her dad, I think it's kinda simpler that way?

otherwise the FBI would still be looking for him. now this obvs doesn't close all the doors after they find the agent's body and everything, but that investigation is going to hit a dead end fast, I think they were more worried about that than what ruth would think.

maybe i watched it too quickly but i got tired of it for the last two episodes.

seems like the logical thing would be for them to be done with this and had made the escape or somehow the cartel let them walk away now that they got them up and running.

ill probably check season 3 out but im in no hurry.

overall i dug it. it's a good show.

looked up the cast members and the actress that plays Charlotte is originally from RVA. that's kinda cool.
738258, If there is a show this reminds me of it's Homeland. *Spoilers*
Posted by navajo joe, Sat Mar-21-20 09:12 AM
Started incredibly strong and then the limits of the narrative and the characters quickly make themselves known.

Awful people being awful to each other and stupid only can go so far.

Charlotte is just shitty teenage daughter from Homeland. At least the son is given something to do besides wonder what's for breakfast. Unfortunately they made him a mini-criminal mastermind which is just...dumb.

By the end of this season Ozark episodes had become so repetitive that it'd become a slog. Thankfully they cleared some pieces off the board and most of them were the weakest characters/performers (sweaty FBI Agent, Ruth's sweaty dad, and Justified-reject Jacob).

I still think losing Esai Morales put a huge dent in this show. At least he was interesting in ways that Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, as good as they are as performers, are not.

I hope the third season can recapture some of the magic of the initial season but I don't really have high hopes because there are limits to these kinds of characters and these kinds of stories. I'm not rooting for any of these people (Maybe Ruth and homie with Down Syndrome) so seeing them get out of the jams they are in doesn't hold much thrill as it did w/ something like Breaking Bad.
