Unlike many people, I actually liked Rob Zombie's Halloween movies (except for the last 30 seconds of Part 2), but this re-re-boot looks like a nice return to form.

And I like that they gave Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode the Sarah Connor treatment, but...

That's a tough one for a horror movie. It definitely takes away from the creepiness/terror when you have a tough, resilient, ready-to-battle protagonist that you know is going to survive the movie.

And yet I really hate it horror movies build up iconic or "baddass" characters, only to kill them off for shock value and then leave you with protagonists that you couldn't give a shit about.

Can this movie find a good balance?

Hope so.
729970, I stand with you on that first Rob Zombie movie

Jamie Lee Curtis will die saving her granddaugther or something, and that actress will carry the franchise
732278, I enjoyed the first, the second was questionable
Posted by Paps_Smear, Mon Oct-22-18 09:10 AM
I know a lot of people shit on Rob Zombies first Halloween because it explained too much on why Michael was evil. In the original he came from what looks like a nice upper class family, he was just pure evil with no explanation. Since Zombies movie was sort of a re telling I didn't mind that we got to see that side of him as a kid.

The second movie had me hype as hell at the beginning. That hospital scene was absolutely brutal and I thought I was in for a ride. After that dream sequence I found the main character to be insufferable and honestly was waiting for her to just die and let her friend be the survivor in this film. It felt too much like a Rob Zombie music video instead of a Halloween flick. That white horse shit was ridiculous and should have been left out. Felt like a cheap attempt to have his wife in another movie. The ending was awful as well. Still I suffer though the movie just to watch that opening sequence because it's so well done.
729963, this looks good.

I liked RZ's too & will probably give this a shot as well now
730004, On the fence, trailer not different than any other slasher

still has potential to just be a Halloween cash grab with JLC as the bait. We shall see.

This is gonna be divisive for a lot of reasons. With that said, this is much funnier than I anticipated.

Very much stays true to the original in most aspects.

Can't wait to see this again. This shit is NOT gonna be for everybody.
732219, this shit sucks.
Posted by Deebot, Fri Oct-19-18 12:11 PM
Dull, lifeless, and terribly written. Zero memorable scenes. JLC is fine, but she's given very little to work with due to the undercooked amateurish writing, and is missing for very large stretches of the film. There is unintentional comedy, and the intentional comedy is generic fluff that largely misses.

Here's to hoping the Suspiria remake is better...
732221, I've heard way more good things
Posted by Paps_Smear, Fri Oct-19-18 01:22 PM
Than I've heard bad.

The horror community seems to think they nailed it with this one, and they hate most of the Halloween sequels.

I'll be checking it out this weekend.
732233, do you like the original?
Posted by will_5198, Fri Oct-19-18 06:59 PM
732235, absolutely

732237, this is the review I most agree with:

732391, I agree with that review but didn't hate it.

it's fine, which is both disappointing (considering the original) and a surprise (considering the sequels) at the same time.

the main point I agree with tho, is there is no atmosphere. the first one is a classic because it's just so moody and creepy -- here we just have extra gore, which anybody can do. they pulled off a great mix in a few scenes (about half the ending, the motion sensor lawn) but overall it wasn't very tense.
732271, I enjoyed this quite a lot (small SPOILER at the end)
Posted by BigWorm, Mon Oct-22-18 06:40 AM
Everyone's opinion is valid, but I don't agree with the other player. I think the writing is just fine.

I didn't think it was that scary/creepy, but slasher films don't really unsettle me. BUT more than even a horror movie, I saw this as a movie about how a woman's PTSD as a survivor of a massacre 40 years ago destroys her relationship with her family, and how the only way she can restore that relationship is by facing the demon from her past.

I think it ends on a perfect note, and I hope there's no sequel. There will be, though, and it will totally ruin the effectiveness of this movie.

The Bad: the same problems with the original apply here. First, how the fuck does Michael Myers even know how to drive a car? Second, Myers somehow always seem to know exactly where to go to find the people he wants to kill. How does he know to go to this gas station right when certain people will be there? How does he know exactly where Laurie Strode's super bunker hidden in the woods is located? How does he even know how to get from the prison to Haddonfield? Dude was caught long before the GPS was invented. You have to just ignore this shit and go along for the ride.

The Good: Jamie Lee Curtis owns this. Judy Greer is decent for most of it, then has a significant moment near the end that had the audience cheering. I only caught some of the references/easter eggs to previous films, but the ones I did catch had me grinning. A scene with Myers in plain sight just going from house to house jacking up the neighborhood was really effective. And again the climax was perfect to me.

If Laurie Strode spent her whole life in training, waiting for the chance to kill Michael Myers, I don't believe that she would just ride off into the sunset while the house burned down with Myers in it. She would stand outside the house and watch that shit burn down to ashes, just to make sure Myers was legit dead this time. He survived being shot point blank and falling out of a house the first time. This time she would definitely watch him burn and look for his remains once the fire went out. I know they were leaving it open for a sequel but it didn't jive with the character.

732272, Agreed, this movie was great
Posted by Paps_Smear, Mon Oct-22-18 06:53 AM
Really felt like the perfect Halloween squeal. I've been on a binge of them due to the season and they all have their faults, this one corrects most of the mistakes in the others and it's a welcome to the new timeline that only includes the original and this one.

*Spoiler*

He doesn't know where her bunker is, he's taken there by the crazy ass doctor and let lose to kill. Ol boy wanted to see how his lion would act in the wild, and got exactly what he asked for.

Also I think him being at the gas station at the same time as the folks doing a podcast on him just showed how mostly everyone in the Halloween series is just in the wrong place at the wrong time. If they would have just left that would have been it. Michael was murdering some folks in the gas station and just happened to run across them.

Loved the kids wearing the three different mask from part 3 and him doing the random killings around the neighborhood was a throw back to part 2.
732379, RE: Agreed, this movie was great

I didn't catch the masks from 3, that's cool, haven't seen that movie in over 20 years tho now. I just watched the first one before this again to refresh.

I really enjoyed this. The crazy doctor probably the weakest to me, a twist that seemed a little too goofy to me but I'll let it slide. Overall this was a pretty fun sequel.
732273, This was a fun movie...we enjoyed the hell out of it

Lot's of dumb choices - it's a horror movie what do you expect :)

Jamie Lee did her thing with this one
732395, Not really a spoiler, but
Posted by tully_blanchard, Mon Oct-29-18 07:01 AM
I think the dumb choices were put in there on purpose. Whenever anybody did anything "obvious", our audience groaned and laughed out loud, lol.

way better than the rob zombie flicks.
736542, They are making 2 more of these?

I just saw this yesterday, currently filming Halloween Kills for 2020 release followed by Halloween Ends..

I liked this reboot sequel pretty well but not sure really need more of them.

736558, I feel the same
Posted by BigWorm, Mon Nov-04-19 07:29 AM
I really really liked this. I thought it ended on the perfect note. And I especially liked badass-yet-broken Laurie Strode. But I don't need to see that for two more movies.

Why? Because she's the anchor to the franchise. The tough character that the others can hide behind because she's more angry than scared. Horror movies have a way of killing off those characters in the sequel so that the rest of the characters (and the audience) feels like there's no safety night, no fearless protagonist to stop the killer.

That would piss me off. In the same way that there didn't need to be any more Terminator movies after T2. We got the closure we wanted/needed.
739036, The sequels have been pushed back a year

Too bad, but also I can't imagine being comfortable going to the theaters by the fall so it's a smart idea. They did release a teaser though.

742334, might be the dumbest cast of characters in a horror movie ever.
Posted by Reeq, Sun Oct-17-21 01:34 PM
and thats saying a lot.

seriously the premise of the film was how can we make a bunch of people get themselves killed while letting the killer live.

the ending was fucking mind numbingly dumb.
742336, That speech Laurie gave was incomprehensible

On the plus side, I wanted to see all these characters die, and then they did. At least we have that.
742393, im surprised they didnt go entirely stupid (spoiler)
Posted by Reeq, Thu Oct-21-21 10:24 PM
i thought they were gonna get riled up at the hospital and go out to hunt michael...then he was just gonna come to the empty/abandoned hospital and wreck shit (like the original halloween 2).

im not even sure of the purpose of so much of the movie taking place in the hospital this time (especially laurie and that cop who seemed like they were setting up for a showdown with michael later).
742409, Same, this was one of the mistakes Rob Zombie made:

Either do an homage to Halloween 2, or don’t. Why reference the hospital if you’re not gonna make a hospital horror movie? It’s such a great setting.

Zombie made a FANTASTIC homage to Halloween 2… and then pulled the rug out from under the audience and revealed it was just a dream. This wasn’t the same kind of fake out, but it still didn’t deliver on its promise.

Lol. I finally decided to watch this one on HBO max last night. It's hilarious, the bad acting and dumb characters. Just awful and I thought that the last one was decent aside from the doctor turn which was just weird
