Went to an IMAX showing of Black Panther and this was one of the trailers. I'm in for the visuals alone
727952, Haven't been that sold on a movie from a trailer in awhile

I'm a bit upset Renner isn't in the film (or is he?) Cavill looks like a complete badass and I'm liking the "villain" turn in this a whole lot.

Just let T.C. keep making these and keep him away from that rumored Green Lantern film.
730646, SAW THIS TONIGHT. CRUISE IS A MOTHERFUCKING DEMON.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-20-18 01:19 AM
It's fucking great, as you'd expect. Stunts continue to be absolutely next level. The action is fucking top notch. Cruise, Cavill, Pegg, Rhames, Ferguson, FUCKING KIRBY-- all terrific.

This is the best movie of the summer by a landslide. I hope it makes a billion dollars.
730654, I feel like I’ve already seen it with the trailers showing so much

730656, Trust me, the trailers don't even scrape the surface.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-20-18 10:55 AM
I'm glad I didn't see any trailers before seeing the movie, but the movie is non-stop action-- they'd need an hour-long trailer to spoil everything.

730668, good to hear,

Posted by go mack, Fri Jul-20-18 11:00 AM
I meant to see Rogue Nation but didn't make it to it. I'm rewatching all of them now even tho that one is probably the only one I really need to rewatch.
730680, Oh my God, Rogue Nation fucking OWNS.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-20-18 08:07 PM
An absolute must see.
730665, RE: SAW THIS TONIGHT. CRUISE IS A MOTHERFUCKING DEMON.
Posted by xangeluvr, Fri Jul-20-18 03:30 PM
Good to hear. People can say what they want about Cruise and his weirdness, but that dude knows how to make a movie.
730681, McQuarrie is also one of the best action directors alive.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-20-18 08:09 PM
Maybe it's just because he's paired himself for three straight movies with one of the greatest action heroes and movie stars to ever grace the silver screen. But he also knows exactly how to shoot Tom's madness. And the editing is CRISP. It's absolutely god-level shit.
730763, ] McQuarrie been good at action since Way of the Gun
Posted by JiggysMyDayJob, Mon Jul-23-18 10:26 PM
He's proven that he can take a tent pole franchise and go ham. I want 5 more M:I movies.
730780, Preach

730761, If you don't see this in IMAX, then you're doing it wrong.
Posted by bwood, Mon Jul-23-18 09:54 PM
Holy shit!!!

McQuarrie successfully married the espionage from the first with the set pieces we all love from the rest of the series.

References big and small throughout to the previous films.

A+ use Ving Rhames and Henry Cavill.

Can't wait to see this again.
730762, It’s worth it like Dr Strange and Blade Runner 2?

730766, Yes, but for different reasons.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Jul-24-18 12:11 AM
Strange had the insane psychedelic effects.

Blade Runner 2049 had the lush cinematography.

This has all-timer level stunt action sequences.

Definitely worth it in IMAX.
730793, Question on IMAX
Posted by go mack, Wed Jul-25-18 08:07 AM
is IMAX digital and not 70mm still worth it over say an Ultrascreen DLX theater? I may drive a little further if so, but aren't any true IMAX's near me other than the zoo that doesn't show theatrical movies.
730794, Yes.
Posted by bwood, Wed Jul-25-18 08:40 AM
I'll always make sure to note if it's IMAX 70MM or not. A digital IMAX is perfectly fine for this.
730771, So mad my wife is going out of town this weekend
Posted by spenzalii, Tue Jul-24-18 12:46 PM
Need to take her to the airport on Thursday, pick her up on Saturday, and have the kids over the weekend. No early screening or IMAX for me and a 9 year old.

Ideally I'll see it at one of the Air & Space museums on the real deal IMAX screems. Just need to sort my schedule for next week. There's a Regal IMAX not too far away I could see it at first, but if I can see it on the OG screen, that usually is my preference
730776, The scenes formatted in IMAX are next level b.
Posted by bwood, Tue Jul-24-18 01:43 PM
Like Black Panther, Infinity War, and Ant-Man and the Wasp IMAX shows why it's the ultimate format.

I know Venom is formatted for IMAX but I'm gonna skip that one.

However, after seeing this shit last night, Damian Chazelle better bring it with First Man IMAX 70MM. You can't slouch on this shit anymore.
730782, I'll go for IMAX when I can
Posted by spenzalii, Tue Jul-24-18 04:50 PM
Saw BP, and IW on (Lie)Imax and it was pretty amazing. Went to the Air & Space to see The Last Jedi. The star destroyer shot was unreal on that 5 story screen. It was a nice little drive to Chantilly VA, but well worth it.

Really is a much more immersive experience than #d (which I'm glad the hype for that has cooled considerably)
730790, Same, but she wants to see it with me...
Posted by phenompyrus, Wed Jul-25-18 07:15 AM
I'm going to TRY and catch an IMAX showing myself and then another with her when she comes back.
730820, Give Cruise an Oscar.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-27-18 01:43 AM
Doesn’t even need to be Best Actor. It can be a Special Oscar. But dude is out here doing Buster Keaton level stunts for our enjoyment, and he deserves recognition.
730825, Saw it last night
Posted by go mack, Fri Jul-27-18 09:08 AM
It was good but think I may have liked Rogue Nation a tad more. I mean this franchise has to have the best 4-6 installments for sure of any franchise.

730833, Question - Haven't seen yet so no SPOILERS please
Posted by Beamer6178, Fri Jul-27-18 04:44 PM
I been fucking with Ethan Hunt since the first and have seen each and every one in the theaters.

If I go back and rewatch all the others building up to this one, will it have any cohesiveness? I feel like after the 3rd one it kind of broke off and went in a different direction.

730836, lol

you wondering of they going to do a SPECTRE lol
730842, I just did that before seeing it
Posted by go mack, Fri Jul-27-18 07:25 PM
2 is the one that is the furthest from the others imo and not really necessary altho I still like it. The others are all fun and fit pretty well together imo. I'd definitely recommend re-watching Rogue Nation at the very least again before Fallout.
730849, 3 through 6 are pretty cohesive tbh.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Jul-28-18 03:40 PM
This movie also alludes to 1 more than once so there’s a bit of a tie there.

2 stands out, but it’s also super goofy fucking fun.
730872, I still like the opening stunt and the motorcycle scene from 2.....
Posted by rorschach, Mon Jul-30-18 09:11 PM
and I still cannot understand how the man who made Hard Boiled could not figure out how to make a solid Mission Impossible movie.
---------------------------------------

---------------------------------------
730873, I’ll be honest, I LOVE M:I-2.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Jul-30-18 09:35 PM
It’s absolutely bonkers and I love every bonkers minute of it. The entire back half of the movie absolutely fucks.
730874, on rewatch, it's not as bad as I remember.....
Posted by rorschach, Mon Jul-30-18 09:54 PM
don't get me wrong, I still didn't like it start to finish. I just thought it was fine....definitely a product of its time. Ethan Hunt is basically Neo in The Matrix in that second half (maybe the second half of every MI movie).

MI:2 gets such a bad rap because it's directly behind the OG (which is one of the best spy movies I've ever seen still) and cannot come close to the next-level stunting from movies 4-6.

Feels more dated than the original (even if the tech in the original gives the game away quite a bit). I just consider this a John Woo flick that just happens to have the MI tagline

730845, This was bananas, esp in IMAX
Posted by rdhull, Sat Jul-28-18 12:37 AM
and that soundtrack? loved it

730875, Movies like this are why stuntmen need Oscars.
Posted by rorschach, Mon Jul-30-18 10:45 PM
There's no way sequences like the skydive or the helicopter stunt should go without being acknowledged.

730945, I'm a little sad that the HALO jump didn't LOOK real to me
Posted by Nodima, Fri Aug-03-18 01:36 AM
I hadn't watched the promotional material about them filming it before, and I'm sure for safety reasons they wound up filming and using footage from some of their time in that wind tunnel thing they built. But I just came across that Youtube video tonight and...man, I spent that whole sequence during the movie pretty into it, but also kind of annoyed that they crammed a huge CGI sequence into an otherwise super physical movie. It wasn't that I felt like the scene had to be faked, either, it just looked like CGI.

I almost feel drawn to seeing the movie in IMAX again just to see if it was a weird mental hurdle I couldn't get over or something.

731041, Holy balls this movie was ridiculous
Posted by spenzalii, Tue Aug-07-18 10:56 PM
The ending waivered a little bit but this was a full on blast. I do like how they tied the other movies together or at least had nods to them. Once again the franchise took what Spectre tried to do and did it better.

I have no idea how much longer Cruise can do his own stunt work. But it's an absolute joy to watch while he does. I don't care if the motorcycle or the running is a belabored trope, he manages it better than anyone else at this point.

Bravo.
731050, Not sure hyperbole is possible for this. Cruise is the GOAT
Posted by Cold Truth, Wed Aug-08-18 12:22 PM
Action star.

Is there even a question at this point?

He's got a certain brand of charisma that's unmatched. Denzel, Pitt, Clooney, even Will at his swaggiest... just don't quite measure up.

RDJ is on par, but only in his MCU work. Cruise is a beast in his B-list flicks. Knight and Day is still immaculate due to that special brand of Crooooooze Ham. With any other actor, that's an "eh" movie, instead of the incredibly fun popcorn flick that it is.

Edge of Tomorrow? I blame marketing, because

And on the straight ahead action front, is there anyone better, for a longer stretch, with such high quality? Has anyone else pulled of a single franchise, 6 movies in, with this consistent level of quality? F&F made Diesel and Walker top tier, but really only within the scope of that franchise, and there were some lulls before they hit the NOS on the franchise in ep 4.

This is one of those flicks that make it difficult to discern whether or not I'm simply high off the ride of the most recent flick, or this man really is as untouchable as he seems.

Because I need a whole new MI trilogy at this point.
731172, I guess I was the only one underwhelmed?
Posted by RobOne4, Mon Aug-13-18 06:08 PM
I was digging it but they really lost me in the 3rd act. Like that shit was ridiculously over the top. Even my wife who probably loves Cruise more than Longo was like okay that was ridiculous. before that it was good but that helicopter shit really left a bad taste in my mouth.
731465, Finally saw it - good shit
Posted by Beamer6178, Tue Aug-28-18 12:07 PM
Having rewatched all the others right up to this, it was pretty crazy that they had his ass run his longest continuous stretch. He ran like a motherfucker....not as fast, clearly he's aged, but he still ran.

After seeing this and rewatching the Equalizer in prep for E2, Tom and Denzel BEEN needing to do a flick or three.

They could have done some good ass Alex Cross movies, with Tom as Soneji or Kyle Craig.

Don't want it to be as cheeky as Expendables because these motherfuckers can actually act. But they could print money if they teamed up for something.
731666, there were some crazy ass shots in here!
