720460, WB considering Matrix Reboot with Michael B Jordan
Posted by mrshow, Tue Mar-14-17 08:48 PM
Zak Penn doing the treatment. Wachowskis don't seem to be involved

720461, Fucking Kevin Tsujihara.

Fuck that guy.

And LOLOLOL at Zak Penn
720464, Don't mind the idea. Zak Penn is a less than inspired choice.
Posted by SoulHonky, Wed Mar-15-17 12:58 AM
They obviously could do a better job with the franchise as a whole this time, knowing that they are moving forward with multiple films from the jump. They can't rely on the FX like they did before unless they have some new VR or 3D approach that could wow people but I have no real issue with someone wanting a second swing and making this a full-fledged franchise with possible spin-offs.

And I know that you can't tell whether or not the original screenplay is what makes the screen or if it was rewritten along the way but Zak Penn's track record isn't great. PCU might be his best movie. His past forays into superhero scripts are awful with X-Men: The Last Stand and Elektra. (We know that The Incredible Hulk had script issues with Ed Norton so that one's not on Penn.)

If we're looking for 90's WB films to remake into franchises, I might try out some earlier 90's films first and give The Matrix a few more years so new technology might be able to elevate it. Perhaps go with:
- Maverick franchise - get Gosling and Stone or McAdams.
- Joe versus the Volcano franchise! Joe vs. Geostorm!
- The Neverending Story reboot?
- New Jack City epic
- Dennis the Menace
- Grumpy Old Men with Pacino and DeNiro
- Another shot at the Lestat books?
720475, I been saying if anything needs a reboot
Posted by The3rdOne, Wed Mar-15-17 09:22 AM
It would be the Neverending Story
720526, I been saying we need a Highlander reboot

720466, I think Matrix 4 would be a better idea than a full reboot.
Posted by rorschach, Wed Mar-15-17 02:39 AM
The story could pick up years after Revolution. The Matrix, realizing its demise is impending, reneges on the compromise it made and gets back to using humans as batteries.

Michael B. Jordan could be the son of Morpheus and Niobe....and he also could be one of the people who decides to live in the Matrix only for everything to go south.

eh....thats my idea.
720474, My money is on a Morpheus prequel.

720479, I'm down for a Morpheus origin

720482, No Wachowskis? GOOD! It’s high time WB stops enabling them
Posted by Cold Truth, Wed Mar-15-17 11:34 AM
I can only imagine how awful this would be after WB hands them another two hundred-million-dollar check. We’d get Eddie Redmayne as some hammed up, overly affected Agent X or some bullshit.

No thanks.

Far as Penn... I'll withhold judgment. He's writing Pacific Rim and Ready Player One. WB might well be impressed with his work on those so who knows, he might be on the rise. To be fair It seems like all of Penn’s worst outings were co-writing credits and he wrote the story for X2 and Avengers (co-credit with Whedon) and those are strong credits.

It could be worse though, they could’ve tapped Snyder for this, though he’d be a great choice from a visual standpoint. MBJ is an excellent choice to anchor this so I’ll withhold judgement until more information comes out.

Also I’d rather not see a Morpheus origin story or prequel of any kind. I’d rather see this as another iteration/cycle, perhaps with a few references/connections to the prior film. Given the subject matter it shouldn’t be hard to do that.
720528, Wachowskis already had their three strikes....
Posted by rorschach, Wed Mar-15-17 05:53 PM
Speed Racer.
Cloud Atlas.
Jupiter Ascending.

Jupiter Ascending was the last straw. The Wachowskis had such a big budget for that film and the film itself had a broken plot that no amount of reshoots could fix.

720529, Let's all hope.
Posted by Cold Truth, Wed Mar-15-17 06:11 PM
I mean, I hope they get to work again. I just personally hope they stay far, far, far away from any property I enjoy until they've proven they can be trusted lol.
720532, Speed Racer is one of the best movies ever made, hipster

Posted by rorschach, Fri Mar-17-17 01:59 AM
Because it's decent. Speed Racer counts as a strike because it was a flop.

And no, it was not brilliant. It was decent. Not bad at all.
720536, ALL THREE OF THOSE MOVIES WERE TERRIFIC. HI HATERS!

720520, "REBOOT"? So does this mean point towards prequel?
Posted by SoulHonky, Wed Mar-15-17 04:59 PM
Could be a straight denial but the wording and caps of REBOOT are interesting.
720525, in the body of the article it said relaunch
Posted by Rjcc, Wed Mar-15-17 05:31 PM
which makes more sense

more stories in the matrix universe, a morpheus prequel would be easy as hell

720524, it may not be a reboot, the sources said re*launch*

Might as well make a new season of Twin Peaks without David Lynch.
720540, the best Matrix stories were already made by others

the videogame and the Animatrix

Only possible way is for the reviews to be 100% stellar.

I do remember the first time I saw The matrix - it was actually a tets screening of it about 3 weeks before it came out.

Blown away - BUT - super pissed off the jacked The Matrix from Neuromancer and didn't give any sort of credit to William Gibson.

I wish they'd do Neuromancer or Snow Crash instead of this.

And even with STELLAR reviews - if I have to see dozens of Cadillacs in a scene then I'll stand up and walk out.
720543, Why bother; they already told the story. TWICE actually.
Posted by BigReg, Thu Mar-16-17 08:08 AM
The first Matrix was as complete a movie as you can get.

They found a way to make two sequels with basically zero plot and narrative sense but was oddly entertaining...think Fast and the Furious minus Maxim magazine models in bikini's and adding Deeprak Chopra...but even then those were basically the first movie's plot re-told

Like RJCC above me said, the best matrix stories outside of the main movie took place on the side with MUCH lower stakes...the videogame with a side story during the big Neo/Smith 'war' and Animatrix with people figuring out their reality was 'off' and playing with magic realism as a story telling device.

720550, They could make Matrix 4 a prequel and sequel at the same time
Posted by soulfunk, Thu Mar-16-17 11:34 AM
by literally rebooting it in universe. Revolutions ended with what was specifically stated would be a temporary peace, with humans having the option to leave the matrix. But others would have decided to stay in the matrix, which was rebooted at the end of the movie.

So if you take it two or three generations into the future you have an entire world of people in the matrix who weren't around at the time of the war, and the matrix will be their reality. Have the new movie be from the perspective of those people, discovering that their world isn't real. Essentially this would be like a Morpheus prequel but actually in the future with different characters. Maybe have their world be very different from ours (in universe because the machines added updates, out of universe to differentiate the new movie from the old trilogy.) At the same time, outside of the matrix you'd have a civilization of people in Zion who would be completely separate from those in universe. Maybe they would be specifically trying to avoid meeting people in the matrix because of the potential to start another war, but they end up getting found and chaos ensues.
