718958, Under the Shadow (Anvari, 2016) ... horror from Iran Posted by stylez dainty, Thu Jan-12-17 05:14 PM
I had read a lot about this, so I was glad to see it turn up on Netflix. I really enjoyed it. I always like it when a horror movie gives you a look at boogeymen from other cultures, in this case a djinn. Well acted, well shot, and for anyone who's ever thought about trying to do a horror movie with a low budget, this is a good example of ideas being more important than effects.
Also, the cultural setting (Iran, during the Iran Iraq War) plays a significant part in the events of the film, giving it an interesting extra level of resonance.
A low-key movie, compared to the hysteria of something like the Babadook, but still moves along nicely, building up tension with things as simple as duct tape and cracks in the ceiling.
