716736, so far IMO best new show on TV
Posted by Ray_Snill, Fri Oct-21-16 07:44 PM
they know how to write 'angry but not so angry' black guy really well.
I love Randall knows exactly who and what he is even though he was raised by a white family. the twins relationship is stellar also, they remind me of 2 sisters I know as adults.

716776, It was but the "twist"
Posted by Stadiq, Sun Oct-23-16 02:43 PM
Was surprisingly obvious.

I had read somewhere how mind blowing
it was so I was kind of meh when I saw it.

It's been a minute but I want to say it was
made obvious in the first five minutes. Kept waiting
for a different twist haha.

716797, i was wondering if the classic "i knew it all along!" response was here
Posted by Calico, Mon Oct-24-16 07:29 AM
thanks for not disappointing

...anyway, good show.... I like "the new Bravermans"
716801, to be fair I didn't even watch and I called the twist
Posted by Oak27, Mon Oct-24-16 08:23 AM
as my girlfriend was telling me about the show.

also, I was watching an episode with her last week when they were all at the pool when Mandy Moore was having a confrontation with the black mom and as they are about to go their separate ways I sarcastically yelled as Mandy's character "and don't you dare tell me how to groom my son's hair!" and before I could even finish my joke the other mother was telling Mandy how to take care of the bumps on the back of the kid's head.
716819, oh stop
Posted by Stadiq, Mon Oct-24-16 12:40 PM

Just saying I was a little thrown/distracted by it because I kept waiting for the "real" shoe to drop so to speak. It kind of impeded my enjoyment of the pilot.

It's not that serious.
716824, i didnt call it
Posted by lfresh, Mon Oct-24-16 01:37 PM
But I avoided commentary and reviews and went in clean
Just heard it was good and gave it a shot
Very pleasant surprise

716830, bound to happen if you watched it after being told of a twist
Posted by Ray_Snill, Mon Oct-24-16 02:33 PM
if he figured it out in the first 5 minutes then he's really good considering the first 5 minutes was dude's ass out in a towel trying to get sex from his pregnant wife.

I watched it clean with no notice of there being a twist of any kind and it was truly great. I feel like people who saw it after being put on notice of a twist were in effect robbed.

loved when kate put the lil girl out of the car, and the fact the mom quickly figured it all out and wasn't mad...

I like it.
I wonder if it was written by a computer because as good as it is, it seems formulaic - like a computer wrote it.
And was that a flash forward with Chris Darden? They kind of dropped that casually.
And the OG Arrow's speech at the end of ep 5 with the painting had "computer writer" all over it. In a bad way.
Why'd Scooter have to be Black? (at the football viewing party)

I have officially fallen in love with Beth. nice callback with Kate putting on all the eyeliner in the flashback. I was hoping we finally get a scene with Rebecca and Kevin as an adult. William let the cat out the bag about the past so it will be interesting to see where they go with that

I was cracking up after they stopped fighting and heard the police sirens, Randall goes "Let's go, I'm still black!!" and they both high tailed it up outta there.

I'm looking forward to next week.

And saying, "Please don't tell," after you've told something, never works. LOL

Especially when there's a woman involved. A woman who adores and loves her man like she does.

Can't wait!

717719, Fantastic episode
Posted by Calico, Wed Nov-23-16 09:07 AM
William schooling the actress lady, and Beth letting Rebecca know that time was NOT on her side were my favorite moments

the way they looked at Kate on the plane made me mad....I'm a big dude, but have never had people be so rude on a flight..... the stares... the "automatic" seat belt help... her explaining that she bought two seats to the lady she sat "next" to without that lady being like "oh, it's cool"....ugh

That OG Thanksgiving trip/story was pretty crazy and awesome...
717727, that was some top notch writing and storytelling all around
Posted by Ray_Snill, Wed Nov-23-16 12:07 PM
the only thing that felt out of place was Kate's story but I guess cause she wasn't there and it was the first time we almost got all the players in the same room as adults. William is low key becoming my favorite character. I have 3 lifelong addicts in my family, all brilliant in their own way just like William so it's uncomfortable seeing so much truth in his performance. one thing that stood out to me, I'm glad Kevin realized he was being a dick to Miguel and let him wear the hat. next week looks like they gonna give me Them Feels™ something serious.

>anybody else watching? that 1st episode was top notch imo...
>saw all the episodes so far and for network tv, this show is

this is the best network television show that I have ever seen.

The trip sequence where he consulted with his "dad".
The tactic used to bring Randall into his community as well as how they strengthened the bond between him and his "dad" at the same time.
And the way he handled his mom at the end. Like: "Nah! You gonna feel this burn a lil longer. I understand a bit better but you will feel this."
Kev, away from his Manny role, is starting to come into his own a tad more.
And Beth being put on ice by Toby.

All too real! As well as all top notch writing and execution.
717850, ole girl was wrong to call Toby
Posted by Calico, Wed Nov-30-16 12:19 PM
....she broke up with him, but still wants emotional support....nope...

British chick was all the way wrong for bringing those people.... if you don't wanna be there, don't come....

Good Lord, that scene with the dads almost made me misty.... that really had to be tough for Jack to bring him there and know that his son needed a man other than him to look up to...

I thought the screenwriter lady was really cute, so I wasn't mad at Kev for tappin LOL

....this show is on a whole other level.... I can't say it's the "best" show, but it's impeccably done and deserves multiple Emmys
717851, It was real tho. After a breakup, one person may do the same...

Yeah! However, they made sure Jack knew how valuable he was as young Randall's father. That was big of them to uplift him while introducing the community of Black men to young Randle. Truly one of the most profoundly gripping scenes I've ever watched.

>The trip sequence where he consulted with his "dad".

that got to me man, it was beautiful seeing these black men recognizing this white man and letting him know they all had his back.
then as the scene faded out seeing them all doing the push-ups with Randall on their backs.

>And the way he handled his mom at the end. Like: "Nah! You
>gonna feel this burn a lil longer. I understand a bit better
>but you will feel this."

that's where the Feels got me cause you can see, she LOVED THE HELL out of Randall. I understand he wants her to hurt a little while but it's good that in his trip, his father pointed out all she had done for him. how brilliant was that trip scene? I always wondered how they would get Milo and Sterling in a scene together.

>Kev, away from his Manny role, is starting to come into his

Kev read the hell out of the British chick and he was 100% right and she knew it. I knew he was gonna smash ol girl but she bad to the bone gristle so I ain't mad lol.

http://www.ew.com/article/2016/11/29/this-is-us-creator-randall-rebecca-the-trip

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You and the writers knew that Randall was going to find out the secret about William and Rebecca for some time. What kind of discussions did you guys have about how Randall should process that hurt? And how did you guys arrive at the idea that he would come to understand what Rebecca went through via that hallucination scene? He showed a tremendous amount of compassion and grace for his mother at the end of the episode by saying that must have been very lonely for her to carry that secret.
DAN FOGELMAN: It was a long process. This episode was in formative stages for maybe our longest time in the room. All of our actors had, at varying times, lamented that they don’t always get to act in scenes with all the other actors because of our varying time frames. I believe Sterling had had a conversation with Don Todd, one of our writers, and said, “I wish I could act with Milo. I’ll never get to act with Milo.” That became something we started talking about, and I think the room had started talking about, “What if he had some kind of dream?” And that evolved into this kind of mushroom trip that would allow him to get advice from his father at the time when he needs it the most — after he’s found out this story and secret about his mother.

We’d been talking for quite some time about, “What’s the path of Randall processing and then forgiving his mother?” I felt a secret buried for 36 years doesn’t feel like a piece of information you get, register, become wounded by, and then just go right toward forgiveness. It requires a bigger journey than that. So our step here in this episode was one of processing and seeing it from a different perspective, and then at least opening the door that at some point in their future there will be something akin to a chance at forgiveness.
717856, Man... when William was reading the letter from Rebecca
Posted by After_Words, Wed Nov-30-16 04:00 PM
It was heartbreaking to see how excited he was at the possible reunion between him and Randall... and to have that taken away just as quickly? Wifey and I were sniffling our way through that.

But like others have pointed out, the scene where Randall trips out and talks to his dad was just well done. Normally I'm not a fan of instances like that (I don't know... just seems cheesy I guess?), but this felt right. Did they ever mention how Jack dies? I'm going to assume no and that's another important plot point that will be revealed soon enough, but I'm just wondering if they dropped a hint and I just missed it.

I'm loving that this show is in the same vein as Parenthood and Friday Night Lights. I watched those shows on Netflix and just binged, so I'm experiencing this week to week and the anticipation that comes with that (I kind of miss that feeling).
717871, Those writers/creators own the Network Feels genre lol

Toby better not have flat lined. Not after a comeback like that one.

Randall is a GREAT man. DAMN!

The funniest scene of the night was when Randall's daughter made the statement to him about his father being 'gay or bi or somethin' like that at the very least.' I fell out! I also dug how they didn't make a big deal out of it.

The frailty and flaws of family life can be endearing when you sit back and find ways to appreciate the presence of and roles each person plays in the collective.

Randall's wife is dope. Their whole aura is dope. I've liked her since she appeared on Billions (YumTime) last year. Then, she was in an episode of my other fall show, Divorce, which was poppin on HBO. Didn't ralize she had been around as long as she has until I looked her up on imdb.

Some actors are great actors but are not superstars who can handle a lead in a movie. And some superstars can't handle being a lead cause their acting sucks (Kevin Hart)

I had no idea what to expect going in but I am pleasantly surprised. The stories are amazing and the way they TELL the stories. Just wow man.

Jack and Randall in the karate class had me bawling. I have more words I just can't put them together right now.

I always thought this show writes black characters better than I've ever seen, then I found out 2 of the principle writers were black (Aurin Spire & Kay Oyegun) then it all made sense. but the writing is incredible and like you said the characters are very well developed.

719574, Another great episode
Posted by Heinz, Wed Feb-08-17 01:05 AM
What do you think is up with Randall towards the end of the episode?
719577, Parkinsons?
Posted by CherNic, Wed Feb-08-17 07:53 AM
Could be a stress related shake or coud be something more.
719580, I think it's the stress from dealing with someone stealing his shine at work...
Posted by Creole, Wed Feb-08-17 09:56 AM
and the impending death of his biological father which could also be bringing him back to the space he may have been in when Jack passed away.

I still believe we will see their deaths occur in the same episode. It's gonna be a tough week when that happens. He alluded to something like that on his IG page.
719583, pressure from home and the job catching up
Posted by Ray_Snill, Wed Feb-08-17 11:23 AM
not wanting to deal with his pops health but not being upfront with his job either about what's going on in his personals. the messed up part is it looks like his boss likes & respects him enough to throw him a bone if he just gave him a heads up into the situation. it's too late in the game to be in denial. but remember, this is the dude that thought he could miraculously play a piano at his daughter's function

719578, She sure did. So how the hell did she end up with Miguel lol
Posted by CherNic, Wed Feb-08-17 07:55 AM
I could do without the Kevin/Sophie storyline. And Kate...self destructive much? Does she not really love Toby?
719579, She does love him but ain't feeling him the same way she appears to be...

felling the bad boy.

Good guys finish last!

719733, last night was bittersweet

hate how Randall is falling apart, but I'm loving that Kevin sacrificed his career and play to go and be there for him. they are setting it up to destroy me with William and I know it's coming but man! Rebecca know she wrong, she should have told Jack what was up with the ex from jump. Toby is still my favorite character so far

.... Dude tells Jack that they dated and SHE tells Jack, that dude is embelishing, they were only together for a couple months LOL like that means they WEREN'T dating....

I love the curveballs this show dishes out..... I thought Kevin got scared, but he had an epiphany and went to help his little brother.... I thought Kate had lost her mind, but she went to tell the creepy dude off....
720105, That's what women do tho...
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Feb-28-17 09:49 AM
Especially if they weren't feeling a dude they dated. Hell, women won't even count sex with a dude they weren't feeling.

LOL! It was a beautiful episode. And I'm thankful that we got a full episode with just the two of them. Powerful!
719835, when them ducks walked past the car, I was a WRECK!

it was cool that they actually shot here in Memphis. I saw a picture of Sterling at Central BBQ so I guess they ate there when they were here. that was a great episode, and they still managed to work in Randall & Beth being adorable.

It seems like every ep is out to make the audience cry, but damn it if this last one didn't finally get me shedding tears.

Man I'm tearing up just thinking about that ending. I think I ended up calling my dad like ten minutes after watching it.

this stuff? They got to.

Man, damn! Last night's ep had me smiling, tearing, and straight out mad.

I'd forgotten that William mailed her that postcard until it showed up. I'm glad Beth was pleased by it.

And I felt bad as heck for Randall when he got the pears and phony lil card from the office. So, when he quit, I was pumpin' my fist.

Kevin is that dude!
720330, f'real, randall's got the best crying face on tv...

720505, agreed, it was a good story but it just didn't hit home
Posted by Ray_Snill, Wed Mar-15-17 02:38 PM
ended the season on a very unsatisfying note. I already hate that they hinting Kevin and old girl gonna break up again. I like the actress playing Sophie and the character as well. every since she came into the picture I've started liking Kevin more. we'll see what they come up with next season

720510, It was sorta disappointing. Maybe anticlimactic is a better...
Posted by Creole, Wed Mar-15-17 03:18 PM
description though. (((should shrugs)))

However, it did enough to keep folks interested in wanting to return next season. Nothing was revealed about Jack's impending death. We all thought it would be a result of drunk driving. Maybe he died from a broken heart. Dude loved that woman with everything in him.

It's cool that Randall wants to pay it forward.

I like Kevin's lady. I'm hopeful he gets what's possibly being offered and that she makes that run with him.

And the other one wants to sing... If you can't tell, I dig Toby but can't really stand her.
720513, Toby is weird
Posted by rhchick, Wed Mar-15-17 04:01 PM
I can't get a handle on him. First he's silly and funny then flips to real serious stuff. He's never just on chill mode.

I thought Jack was going to die from drunk driving too. Now I'm really curious how Kate thinks she's the reason why Jack died.

720519, that's what made the episode not suck that much
Posted by Ray_Snill, Wed Mar-15-17 04:40 PM
>Maybe he died from a broken heart. Dude loved that
>woman with everything in him.

it was cool seeing how far they had come in the relationship from the beginning and seeing that she basically saved his life. the fact that he loves her to her core was displayed very well, there's no doubt about that. that just makes his impending death even sadder.

>I like Kevin's lady. I'm hopeful he gets what's possibly being
>offered and that she makes that run with him.

I like she is humanizing him. with the British chick there was a little something but as soon as he broke up with he smashed Sloane. he was still pretty much an aloof playboy manchild. he probably wouldn't have sacrificed his career and been there for Randall when he was breaking down if he wasn't trying to win back Sophie. she gives him something to fight for and makes him put things in perspective. even when he was spazzing out about the critic she reminded him, it was a long-shot getting her but somehow he managed under unfavorable odds. I kinda hope Kevin has some Jack in him, Randall seems to. but then again who couldn't be happy with Beth lol

>I kinda hope Kevin has some Jack in him, Randall seems to. but then again who couldn't be happy with Beth lol

That's why he did what Jack Pearson would have done in that episode. he made his way to his brother despite what he had on his agenda for the night.

bro, this is a great show all the way around. I can't think of one episode that I didn't like. Crazy that the season finale is the only one that I have found to be anticlimactic. In the end though, they left us with a great bit to look forward to for next season.

720559, I liked it.
Posted by phenompyrus, Thu Mar-16-17 01:42 PM
They set up both the past and further past stories in a way that kept you guessing until the end of both. Great first season.
