...seeing 6 episodes.
I thought there was going to be just 3.

I avoided all articles about the new season, so maybe it was mentioned there, but I was kinda hype that I didn't have to pace myself (as much).
716882, season 3 was originally supposed to be 12 episodes
Posted by kennymack, Tue Oct-25-16 05:45 PM
but they decided to split it up into two six-episode seasons
716749, 3 episodes in. Man I missed this show
Posted by spenzalii, Sat Oct-22-16 05:55 PM
Can't wait till people see this so we can post. Even if you can see where they are going it still hits pretty hard.
716754, Season 3, Episode 01 - Nosedive

I let it slide.
716769, That's what our world is coming to?
Posted by spenzalii, Sun Oct-23-16 09:58 AM
Quite a bit unsettling, but very much on point. Loved how the world was colored in all pastels. Props to Bryce Dallas Howard too. Seeing her devolve/evolve was predictable but impossible not to watch
716807, Most disturbing episode of the season IMO
Posted by Marauder21, Mon Oct-24-16 10:19 AM
Loved it, and I was impressed by Bryce Dallas Howard's performance.
716811, I thought they nailed it with this one
Posted by Oak27, Mon Oct-24-16 11:49 AM
They took what is pretty common behavior amongst dedicated social media users and turned the volume all the way to 11.

- Even when she was a 4.2 and her image was nearly perfect, she was unhappy with her life and constantly trying to keep up with the Joneses, in this case the higher 4s.
- Showing social media as the circle jerk that it is. Like my photo and I'll like yours back even though neither of us mean it!
- Her brother representing the people who really don't give a shit about social media, have a "low social media score", but was the most genuinely real and happy out of anyone in the episode.
- The truck driver who realized that no matter how great your image is, there's always gonna be someone there to one-up you, and decided to just flip a 180 into don't GAF mode and say everything she wants to say even if nobody wants to hear it and is the most satisfied she's ever been.
716854, I've only got this far, but....
Posted by TheAlbionist, Tue Oct-25-16 07:51 AM
This could have been the best Black Mirror episode ever. It's either this, 15 Million Merits or the Christmas special with the personal clones..
716916, Fun episode, albeit a bit predictable.
Posted by wallysmith, Wed Oct-26-16 09:07 PM
And I thought the ending was a bit too sugary, but that's more my personal preference.

Great performance from BDH but I admit I was a bit surprised it was her because she put on so much weight.

All that said, a version of this world is well on its way to becoming reality. On mobile so no link, but Google China's national social network. It's not the popularity contest that this episode was, but it's rather a measure of how good a "citizen" you are. The ramifications are fucking scary.
716950, I don't like Black Mirror as Sci-Fi, I enjoy it as quality story telling tho
Posted by astralblak, Sat Oct-29-16 01:23 AM
if that makes sense

the futures they build don't seem very interesting to me, maybe it's because most are "near-distant futures"

but I have really enjoyed a number of the episodes because they come off like exaggerated versions of our world, and the pacing of the narratives are very well done: quality character reavels, world building, ratcheting up the tension, hiding vital info from the viewer until just the right moment. craft-wise, so good

outside of the ending this was a fun ass ep to watch because it felt just like how some folk act already. AND how many of us perform various identities online

i mean that like-scale to get an apt, that's basically how credit scores fuck people in our world right now.

so I guess I look at the show like parables more than Sci-Fi which makes the title Black Mirror so apt

this ep was a solid @@@1/2

Posted by nipsey, Sun Oct-23-16 06:35 PM
All I know is, I could be scared as f&ck. Matter of fact, I wouldn't even sign up for something like that. Probably the most disturbing episode they've had after White Christmas.
716837, dude was an insufferable douchbag

716931, that's a pretty harsh look at the guy

716932, CALL YOUR MOM, DUDE
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Oct-27-16 02:44 PM
LOL, I actually thought the same thing after watching the episode. I remember thinking he seemed like a douche, but he didn't really do anything that bad, the way people in these stories often do when they get their comeuppance. He left home as a way to deal with his grief. Admittedly, he should've told his mom where he was going and when/if he's coming back, but he said they weren't exactly close growing up, and I get that (had a cousin who basically didn't talk to her dad for like a year or two after her mom died for a similar reason.)

I guess there was him taking a picture of the stuff and sending it out, which was against the rules. But he was sort of an ok guy otherwise.
716951, i got legit scared at a couple of points
Posted by astralblak, Sat Oct-29-16 01:26 AM
the constant is this the real world layers until the final one was done well too

again @@@1/2
717052, Mneh on this one. But I liked **spoiler**
Posted by stravinskian, Tue Nov-01-16 11:43 AM

I liked how they set us up to expect it to be a singularity story, and then turned it into something much more mundane.

Matter of fact, I'm tempted to go back to it and watch the ending more closely. I got so hung up on the idea that the program was taking over his mind that at the end I couldn't shake the feeling that the ending they gave us was just the explanation that the singularity wanted us to believe...

Pretty sure I'm overthinking that, though. I think this was just a horror story, which is why it didn't really work for me.

No twists, no huge reveals, even the end was pretty predictable. But watching it all play out was still painfully unsettling
716779, watching the end play out was the best part.

That wasn't predictable! As a matter of fact, I wasn't feeling that episode at ALL until the reveal.

I was thinking, "I ain't doing all of that because I got caught jacking off to porn."

Once I realized that Kenny wasn't an "innocent" victim, then I was like, "Ohhh...".
716863, This was awesome because there is no reason why it can't happen today.

On top of that, he's named Kenny. Not cool.

This by far my favorite. Gugu Mbatha Raw is should be a bigger star than she is.
The whole episode looks like it's going nowhere as there's holes of information everywhere but it all ties up in the last 15 minutes and it's beautiful and creepy at the same time.
716956, i liked it, but my least favorite

This episode encapsulated a lot of how we act as a society.
I think it's the most "Black Mirror" episode of this season.

Using the environment saving bionic bees to punish our digital cruelty which i shidden behind our bullshit sense of justice
One could fill in some gaps and make it a 2 hours horror flick.
Kelly Macdonald is always very interesting to watch even when she plays a mamby pamby investigator, it's all nuanced in her smile and gesture.I also enjoyed Benedict Wong who seem to pop up everywhere since Top Boy. I can't believe he made it out alive of that episode LOL

Top 5 Favorite Black Mirror Episodes

The Entire History Of You
White Christmas
San Junipero
White Bear
Hated In The Nation

- Gugu Mbatha-Raw was great (and fine) in San Junipero.
- Didn't care for Kelly MacDonald in Hated In The Nation.
- Both "Shut Up And Dance" and "Hated..." reminded me of the anxiety of "The National Anthem" from S1. Black Mirror is good at that.
- Loved the last 5 minutes of "Shut Up And Dance".
- Part of the reason I really liked Black Mirror was the showcasing of technology in the near future. Just seeing the things they came up with was always interesting. It seemed like this season backed away from some of that.

Overall solid. Might go back and rewatch S1 again.

I do need to get around to watching White Christmas (I have it on my NAS, but never got around to watching it). Hated In The Nation definitely gets a nod. As some have written its a great mashup of, say, Law & Order plus The X Files. And a shitton of bees that freaked me out.

The 'No...please tell me this isn't going to happen... please', and it does. That slow march to that inevitable, horrible conclusion is pretty well done

Well, it did, but also showed kind of where we are today. Shut Up And Dance is extremely possible right now, and we're a jab step away from Nosedive. The other eps aren't too far fetched or far off

And another shoutout to Doug Stamper absolutely killing it

Her stubborn cop stance coupled with her "ignorance of how technology and social media" didn't work for me. Like anytime she doubted her partner for looking at the situation through technology, I really didn't believe it.
716870, I agree on a couple of things.

You nailed something that I couldn't put my finger on. Pure Advance Sci-Fi of tech way in the future (nanobots, immersive virtual reality) isn't THAT interesting to me.

I like the episodes about stuff that doesn't seem that far away and says something about our current society. I guess that's why the first episode was great and why I seemed to be one of the few who enjoyed Shut up and Dance as a top episode.

717046, Ok, I've ranked all 13 episodes.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Nov-01-16 10:14 AM
I've ranked them from best to worst.

I've also put them in bands and within a band they aren't that drastically different but from band to band there are big leaps in quality/greatness.

I didn't watch these all at once so I think the older episodes are collectively ranked higher because of the freshness of the series when it launched and season 3 suffered under the weight of high expectations.

GREAT EPISODES
1. The Entire History of You
2. The National Anthem
3. White Christmas
4. White Bear

VERY GOOD EPISODES
5. Nosedive
6. Fifteen Million Merits
7. San Junipero
8. Shut Up and Dance
9. The Waldo Moment
10. Playtest

OK, BUT NOT GROUNDBREAKING.
11. Men Against Fire
12. Be Right Back
13. Hated in the Nation

Looking at it like this I think there are some trends.

1. It's been said before but I love the near future tech episodes. Commentary on how we live today if these new fangle technologies are taking to their logical extremes. Once we were exposed to the tech in "The Entire History of You" we immediately got how we would use it and abuse it. Pure awesomeness.

2. Some loved it but I really disliked "Hated in the Nation" because while I dug the online trolling stuff I felt like they didn't explore that enough and I really really hated the drone bees. Just too deus ex machina. I just wish they found a method to kill people that tied more into present day real world anxieties. "Men Against Fire" was a bit one trick pony which you could see coming and "Be Right Back" seemed like something I had seen before on twilight zone or outer limits or some other anthology series (I think I was with that episode until the robot showed up).

Although I could see how there could have been less of an action thriller flick angle that might have been more interesting. But I really loved the ep for what it was.
I had a similar reaction to you with Nosedive. I liked it but I thought her reaction was a little much and it felt a bit silly to me.

1. The Entire History of You
2. The National Anthem
3. White Christmas
4. Hated in the Nation

5. White Bear
6. The Waldo Moment
7. San Junipero
8. Fifteen Million Merits (I fell in love with the girl in it.)
9. Playtest
10. Nosedive
11. Shut Up and Dance (Felt like I'd seen it before.)
12. Men Against Fire

13. Be Right Back

If there’s one thing fans of Black Mirror—the technology-meets-sci-fi anthology series that has led millions of viewers to cover up their laptop webcams with tape—know, it’s to expect the unexpected from the show. Over the past three seasons, the British series-turned-Netflix Original has delved into the darkest corners of technology to present what some might consider a very possible, and very dystopian, future. And they can’t get enough of it. Here’s everything we know about the show’s highly anticipated fourth season, which is expected to drop later this year.

1. THE NEW SEASON IS SHOOTING RIGHT NOW.

Earlier this week, The Telegraph ran an interview with Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker, who shared that he and his team are in the midst of shooting season four right now. And that one of the challenges they face is in trying to “predict” what will be happening in the world by the time the episodes air. “We're working on the new season at the moment—we're about to start filming the third episode in Iceland—so if we were trying to predict the real world, we'd have to think about where the real world's going to be in another six months or so,” Brooker said.

2. AS WITH PREVIOUS SEASONS, EACH EPISODE WILL HAVE A DISTINCT TONE.

"When we did previous seasons, we realized after we'd done the first two that basically each one was a slightly different genre, and we actively approached the first Netflix season like that,” Brooker told The Telegraph. “And we're carrying that forward , so we've got some strikingly different tones and looks.”

3. IT WILL TAKE A STAB AT COMEDY.

Though he’s tight-lipped about the plot lines the fourth season will delve into, Brooker has confirmed that one episode will go in a comedic direction. “We've got one that's overtly comic, much more overtly comic than anything we've done,” Brooker said. “It's got fairly mainstream comic elements, but also some really unpleasant stuff that happens.”

4. JODIE FOSTER WILL DIRECT AN EPISODE.

Though Black Mirror is hardly lacking in star power, the next season will see two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster step behind the camera to direct an episode. Foster’s attachment to the show was reported back in October. Brooker says that the episode, which will focus on a mother-daughter relationship and star Rosemarie DeWitt, will have an indie movie tone.

"Netflix got in touch with her,” Brooker explained of how Foster came to the series. “She's done episodes of Orange Is The New Black before, and they spoke to her and sent her our script, and within a week of that we were Skyping. It was a bit odd, to be Skyping with Jodie Foster—but I did a good job of hiding my delight that I was Skyping with Jodie Foster.”

5. A COUPLE OF EPISODES ARE STILL UP IN THE AIR.

Yes, season four is already in production. But Brooker’s still got two episodes left to write, and says the tone of those episodes is “still slightly up for grabs.”

6. SEASON FOUR MAY NOT BE AS BLEAK AS PREVIOUS SEASONS.

In addition to being one of Black Mirror’s most universally acclaimed episodes, season three’s “San Junipero” installment is also notable for being one of the hit series’ most uplifting episodes ... well, as “uplifting” as a show about the many ways technology can be terrifying can be. But the success of the episode has posed some challenges for Brooker going into season four.

"I'm terrified of ‘San Junipero’ in a way, because I think we sort of captured lightning in a bottle there,” Brooker admitted. “You try and think, okay, that went really well, what else can we do? But you've got to then immediately put everything you think of out of your mind, because you can't really do the same thing again.”

In addition to making sure that each episode is unique, it’s important to Brooker—and his sanity—that he not be constantly immersed in dark themes. "I do think that at the moment, as we're doing new episodes, there's a limit to how much constant nihilistic bleakness I can take,” Brooker continued. “And the world is in a place at the moment where I think maybe people appreciate things that aren't so unremittingly horrible. But you also don't want to short-change people on the unremitting horribleness.”
