712932, Why so few internationally produced blockbusters?
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon Jun-06-16 08:57 PM
Is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon the most recent movie, financed and produced by a country other than the United States, which would be considered a blockbuster?

You would think that production companies and investors in China or Europe would create their own blockbusters, which could also break big here in America, especially since the American market is so lucrative.
712933, They have their own blockbusters; we just don't watch them.

Crouching Tiger was actually co-produced by Columbia and Sony so there were American interests but if a US company isn't involved, there's not much of a push to bring more competition stateside.

This year, The Mermaid has made more in China than Civil War and Zootopia combined. The Mermaid played in 100 theaters in the US and made 3 million dollars.

Distributors don't want to sink advertising money into foreign films when it's so tough to get Americans to watch them. Theaters don't want to waste space with them because, again, you're probably showing them to half-filled crowds. So what ends up happening is that foreign blockbusters are treated like art house films here.

Like you said international films are arthouse movies here and most Americans stick to the films with movie stars or have great word of mouth behind them. Arthouse movies usually have neither.

And it was given SUCH short shrift by distributors
It was embarrassing
Even finding out about it
It was barely advertised and I still haven't seen it

So mad how they played that movie to the left
