713427, The show is killing me. Its got potential but it needs to get its act together Posted by BigReg, Wed Jun-22-16 08:15 AM
It feels like mediocre fan fiction for comic fans who didn't want to let the original go. There is a good show here, but that writing room needs to be overhauled...
STRENGTHS:
All the actors are putting in work and are pulling off their roles. Crazy characters like Cassidy and even the stereotypical single mother have nuance and I like the world they built in that town.
The individual scenes all work and the directing is very solid...they've had some awesomely violent set pieces and even the darker humor banter moments are well shot/planned out as individual pieces. The problem is...
NEGATIVES:
The scenes work, but they don't build to anything, lol. The prostitute hunt into the sink hole death into Tulip meeting/almost killing Cassidy was a cool run of events...but without an investment in a show's bigger purpose it feels we are just wading water.
Why the super slow reveal of all the players? In the comic the story was off and running by like page 5 and each character they introduced had an immediately apparent purpose/goal. Why are we being obtuse? I understand they didn't want to explain the Agents of Heaven so they would have the regeneration gags in later episodes...but we should know more about them and their motivation by now.
Right now on the show outside of Tulip.... NONE OF THE CHARACTERS HAS A CONCRETE GOAL, LOL.
At least Cassidy puts in solid comic relief and has established he's just forced to lay low and wait until he gets cash to leave town. But Jessie? What's his slacker excuse? While he finally settled into wanting a popular church it feels half assed considering his lack of effort and the bigger stakes involved. You've got the power of GOD and all you want is more people in your shitty church's pews? At least have him try to get a megachurch or something.
