706074, The "For Your Consideration" Best of 2015 Recommendation Post
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Dec-21-15 12:51 PM
So, as most of you know, we do our annual "Spilled Latte Awards" on this board every winter/spring. However, we've got some time between now and then. To assist with this, I started a couple of years ago making an FYC post.

IF YOU THINK NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE HAVE SEEN/WILL SEE SOME MOVIE OR PERFORMANCE YOU LOVED THIS YEAR, RECOMMEND IT BELOW.

This is *not* the same as listing your best of the year. Again, we'll make that post closer to year's end.

In this post, try to direct those in search of a good 2015 film or performance toward something maybe they haven't seen or haven't yet gotten around to. I've been using this post annually when trying to figure out which movies I want to prioritize to make sure I watch before putting together my "Best Of 2015" lists. I don't need people to tell me "Go see Star Wars!" or whatever, as most people can assume I've already seen it. Hip me and everyone else to something you feel might be slept on by the masses.

As always, please try to respond by replying in the appropriate place in the post, for the purposes of neatness.

Sincerely,
Your Friendly Neighborhood Mods

Directed by Melanie Laurent. Saw The Adopted which I thought was good. Breathe, tho, might finish in my top 5 of the year. Great stuff.

No 2015 film hit harder.

Bela Tarr + Pasolini + Herzog + Tarkovsky + Lynch.

It is not an easy watch--best in the theatre where you can't take breaks, but go at it with the conviction that you won't turn it off and it will reap rewards.

There is a movie named 'Hard to Be a God' on Netflix, but it was released in 2013 and appears to be a Russian language film. Is Hard To Be a God just making the rounds here in the US or is the movie you've mentioned another one entirely?

Yeah, that's the one; directed by Aleksey German. He died in February 2013. They shot the film on-and-off for 13 years. His son said that it was completed before he died and only audio-dubbing was incomplete. The team of German's partner and son completed the film in September 2013. First ever screening according to IMDb was a film festival in late '13. Festival screenings throughout '14. Kino Lorber gave it a U.S. theatrical run in about 20-odd cities in '15.

Netflix Instant lists it as 2013. Netflix DVD lists it as 2015.

I think the film is an all-time top 10 (or thereabouts) cinematic achievement. But I don't *love* it.
