704729, Blue Eyed Devils of... er, I mean, GODS OF EGYPT (Proyas, 2016) Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Wed Nov-18-15 10:20 AM

This looks absolutely ludicrous and completely insane. But it also should look pretty sick in 3D on the big screen, and Proyas has a very rich imagination so there should be some pretty cool stuff in this, however absurd it may be.
As for the melanin-deficient portrayal of the Egyptian gods and people here, I mean it's Hollywood so wouldn't really expect any different. Although this does look *really* over the top in that regard... but then again I still watch The Ten Commandments every Easter so whaddya gonna do? At least they got a token Black dude to play Thoth.

704731, I love Proyas... but Christ, the white people in Egypt. Enough already. Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Nov-18-15 11:55 AM
It'd be one thing if he got massive names required to get the flick green-lit (which was sort of the reason why I understood the excuses Ridley Scott was making for Christian Bale as Moses, even if it was still a stretch that he couldn't find black actors for literally any of the other roles)... but it's fucking Gerard Butler and Jamie Lannister.
Get Wesley in the Gerard role, Idris Elba in the Lannister role, keep Boseman as Thoth, and some young dude in the Thwaites role. Tristan Wilds, maybe. Or, fuck it, Bow Wow. Or fucking Corbin Bleu. Who cares, it doesn't matter, no one is seeing this movie for Brenton Thwaites.

704736, Proyas - Realism = Every other bland blockbuster Posted by SoulHonky, Wed Nov-18-15 12:45 PM
Proyas is great with stylizing the modern world or creating intense real life situations. This trailer looked like every other big budget epic. I feel like he'd do better with a film that was smaller in scope and would allow him to use his creativity to fashion the world instead of just adding big creatures to the usual Egypt set.
And yeah, it's the 21st century. The pasty Gods and Kings of Egypt have gotta go. At the very least, make it a multicultural cast.

708634, This shit is going to rule. Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-23-16 05:51 PM
It's going to be a really hot mess, don't get me wrong-- but it's going to be an insanely bonkers hot mess, and one that I will see opening night.

708635, I mean, if that's the best preview clip they've got. Posted by SoulHonky, Tue Feb-23-16 06:28 PM
I would have loved to have been in the room when the people who greenlit this shit saw the dailies of this scene. Or any scene involving Gerard Butler "acting".
I won't be seeing it but look forward to your review.

708658, every Lenten season Hollywood finds a new way to whitewash Biblical stories. Posted by SoWhat, Wed Feb-24-16 09:22 AM
I shouldn't say they find a new way bc they've rehashed the same old stories in the same way. But I guess maybe the technology changes every few years.
I wish they'd do the story of Jonathan and David as a (gay) romantic comedy. THAT would be new. I'd watch that even with the whitewashing.

708684, Hopefully this ends the career of everyone involved. Posted by Cold Truth, Wed Feb-24-16 03:34 PM
Clearly nobody associated with this boiling cauldron of liquid shit deserves to continue to participate in the film industry on any level above fetching coffee for someone halfway competent.

708778, Nothing about this movie is appealing. At all. Posted by phenompyrus, Fri Feb-26-16 07:41 AM
The trailers look like garbage, the fiasco of casting whites, horrid big budget CGI.
*Edit* I can't find the link to a review that started... "Well, that didn't go well", I'll update accordingly if that changes.

708834, The panned reviews are going to be epic Posted by lfresh, Sat Feb-27-16 04:50 PM
I'm here for all of the critics trying to top each other in panning this atrocity Also here for audience pans Hope no one pays for it Everyone sees it And the lambasting goes down in history to the point of hasty pudding and the golden raspberries not C knowledge but also deem it that unworthy of acknowledgement ~~~~ When you are born, you cry, and the world rejoices. Live so that when you die, you rejoice, and the world cries. ~~~~ You cannot hate people for their own good.
