Not sure this is a good idea but I'll see it regardless.

Danny Boyle has confirmed plans for a Trainspotting sequel, set for release next year to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the original film.

Based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, Trainspotting was Boyle’s first major hit following 1994’s Shallow Grave, and helped catapult Ewan McGregor to stardom. It also featured Robert Carlyle, Ewen Bremner and Jonny Lee Miller and often appears in charts of the best British films.

“All the four main actors want to come back and do it,” said Boyle. “Now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series.”

Trainspotting sequel on track says Danny Boyle

McGregor has previously confirmed he would like to return as his character, Renton. Miller plays Sherlock Holmes in Elementary and Carlyle is a regular on Once Upon A Time.

Two years ago, Boyle revealed that John Hodge, who wrote the original script, was working on a followup based in Welsh’s 2002 sequel Porno.

Boyle’s new movie, about Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, has premiered to positive reviews at Telluride and looks set to be a major Oscar contender. It shares with Trainspotting a memorable scene involving a lavatory, when Jobs is seen rinsing his feet in one before the launch of the Mac in 1984. Speaking on Sunday, Boyle said: “British films always have to have at least one scene in a toilet.”

702533, There are a couple of movies that have tried something similar

Recently The Boondock Saints and the Evil v Ash movies still included the original actors of the stories each was based on. There are other movies I'm sure which have told the stories of their original characters after some time.

It wouldn't make sense that the other actors would get involved if they didn't have a good script or at the least a good idea to base the movie around.
702547, i wonder what this will center around...

heroin addiction kind of drove the original...what will be the focus now that they're 20 years older? have kids and working shitty jobs?
702548, I haven't read the book but had a quick look on wikipedia

It takes place 10 years later. Sick Boy decides to make a porno in a desperate attempt to make some money, Renton funds it in exchange for a cut of the profits & Begbie gets released from prison & goes looking for them, presumably for revenge.

I'm in.

Although I hope it isn't just a bunch of re-done shots from the first one.
And they have a LOT to live up to in the soundtrack department. Part one is an all-timer

Yeah I'd hope they've put all the callbacks to the original in the trailer & there won't be that many in the film itself. Also I wouldn't think Danny Boyle is the type of guy to make an easy cash-in sequel, I have faith in him to make it worthwhile.
717267, yup. color me impressed

717690, Saw this tonight. It's decent. Strictly for the fans if the first.

It's cool seeing these characters older and at a crossroads trying to find a new high since they all kicked heroin. But this was an unneeded sequel. I enjoyed it, but for those of you hyped. Lower your expectations.

Also, I was wild nervous. I was sitting between Danny Boyle and Tom Rothman
717695, I feel like I should revisit the first before I see this one

Otherwise it just won't hit as hard?
717697, Depends on how well you remember the first film.

There's flashbacks and callbacks to the first but, if you've seen it already I think you should be good.
719467, Went to see this last night & really enjoyed it

I'm Scottish & grew up in the 90s so the first film is a big part of my generation's culture, everyone here has been equally excited & wary about it. It's not an improvement on the original unsurprisingly but I think it's a worthy sequel that complements the original, it dovetails really well together.

This is a a film about memory & how nostalgia affects the present, the characters are still living with regrets from the past, either trying to escape from them, trying to make amends for them or looking for revenge & also trying to recapture their youth, that nostalgia always haunting them. While at the same time the viewer is judging it in comparison with the first film, remembering their favourite scenes, hoping the characters live up to what they expect from them, hoping that nostalgia isn't tarnished. It even goes so far to blend in footage from the original (but not too much) to make those memories even more vivid for the characters & us but it's not done in a way that screams "hey, here's some more if that stuff you like before" it's relevant to the characters, to the story & to life. That's how we are, we are always thinking about our past. Even the soundtrack has taken the big songs like Born Sloppy & Lust For Life & remixed them so they deliberately sound familiar but also fresh at the same time.

As for the plot there's nothing especially ground-breaking here, Renton comes back, Sick Boy is still hustling, Spud is struggling to move on & Begbie is still a psycho. Also there's nothing harrowing like the first one but there are lots of laughs, one scene especially with an impromptu song in a pub had me dying. I'm not sure how well it would work for people unfamiliar with the first film but for everyone else I think it's a fun ride.
